Cliffv:
Welcome to the group. Nice work on the craftsman. That model was my first vise long ago when it was new from Sears back in the late '70's.

Chilang:
I know how you feel. That's why I sell something once in a while. Helps soften the blow of paying out what might be considered too much. One big problem is the other members here (who shall remain nameless ) who regularly post their latest screaming deal aquisitions. That may make some feel that well priced vises are way too high. Most of us find those super deals only once or twice a year.

Although all may not agree, I often consider quality over quantity.

Yeah, but I already have another seven vises bolted on my work benches in my shop...but none bolted to my desk. Did I mention my desk is in the house.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then cracking walnuts it is.---And just how long is your work-bench?---I'm assuming this is a business/industrial bench, or else you have a vise for every conceivable application.

Dedicated: Motor Work Bench, Electrical Bench, Drill/Tapping Bench, Tire/Wheel Bench, Metal/Body Work Bench, General Work Bench with Vise and Pipe Vise. My current basement Workshop...Its pretty tight down there.

Picked up this Paramo #6 a few weeks ago. Really happy to give it a bit of a resto.

Was in VT today and saw a CL ad for a large vise. Called the seller and was happy to see that the seller's address was a factory. Picked these two Starrets/Athols. 35 for the gray one with brass jaws and 50 for the yellow one. 4" jaws. He has more and promised a call when they were ready to sell.

You ****.

TJ: since you painted that bright green Snap on Wilton Tradesman I think others with Snap on boxes have found they like it to hence Joe asking for a color chart. again WELL DONE on those that you have painted that bright green and i'm sure the green in your pocket helped let you know you did a great job. is the 98 about done or have you been building another boat?

Thanks for the kind words, Drives. I have done several Tradesmans and C-series now, I think this 1993 C-2 is my favorite:

uploadfromtaptalk1460703275833.jpg

For color comparison, here is a 2013 C-1 with a Snap On impact driver:

uploadfromtaptalk1460703410606.jpg

As for the 98, it is basically done, just need to do the final fitting on the jaws from KMScott ... but, as always, have a million projects in front of that (have a C-1, C-2 and C-3 to finish up and sell, plus a few others). Always seems like the vises I am going to keep take a back seat to the ones getting flipped.

The rebadging, for up north sales, maybe occurred during the time that Stanley owned the brand name ? ... '91 to '98.

They do another, welded, prefabricated one, that was originally designed and built by Joplin down here.

Its a great unit too.

Right and Left side, jaw positioning, available too,

For "normal" people ... and cacky handers .. :D

Nice find ..
.

Like this one for "normal" people..

What's up with a REED 106, anything good? She weighs in at a 134#, nice curves, pretty jaws but her handle took one hell of a cheater pipe bend. The family mentioned the owner was a machinist for the rail road or something. There are numbers stamped on the side of the vise, I will get pics later, there is also two Patent dates cast in to the side of 1912 and 1914.
img_2417.jpg

Noticed that my Reed 106 base is different. Hadn't noticed a difference compared to others in the past, or maybe i just don't see that many

How do Reed vices compare to other vices? There was one for sale, around 4 inch I think at a local market here on the weekend on the south coast of nsw for $30.00. Seemed sound except it had alot of hammer marks on it. I didn't buy it as 1 I don't need another vice and 2 I wasn't sure if that was a good price or not.

Cliff: welcome to GJ and the vise thread. that restore on the old Craftsman is great and just have a quick question on how you mounted it. did you just screw into the wood bench top or did you put a nut on the bottom of the bolt and drill a hole in your bench? WELL DONE

TJ: you have a talent for making that green color grow on me even if I don't own any Snap On tools or tool boxes. i'm sure you sold the C2 to fund your other vise purchases, but just asking if you agree that a C2 is maybe the best vise that Wilton makes?

Blue Frog: OMG that is a great find. I have a few old craftsman tool boxes still in their original boxes (not opened yet), but I've yet to find a 50 year plus old vise in a box or a grinder like you and some others have.

Scooter: great point and i'm not sure my Reed 106's are pointed a little like yours is or square and i'll have to look and take a few pictures. I think Nine's is one of the old ones from the late 1910's or 1920's.

Joe: I can't say I've seen a circle D lately and would have said never if it weren't for VA's magic search skills. so you think it's an Athol or Starrett like the yellow one?

i'm not mentioning this to be mean, but weren't you saying a couple months ago that you needed to sell off a few vises and that you were going to stop buying them? :D

or did you just go with what runs in your blood and pay the courts to change your official last name to VICEMAN? :bounce:

Joe, for $35.00 you got a steal anyway.---I am assuming the D stands for Dayton Ohio, and there is a possibility that Starrett could have been commissioned to make them.

It's only the second one I've seen, and to put that in perspective, in the index there are (5) reference pages for the Stevens Rapid Lever Vise, (5) for the Dodge Slide Set, (6) for the Emmert Rotating Multi Purpose Vise, and (8) for the Rae Canada Vise, and only (1) for the Dayton.---If that tells you anything?---Anyway you done real good.

I just picked this up yesterday. Any info on this model would be appreciated. Needs a spit shine and lubrication is all. 48035f48b0ff0d81de360b4678076e1e.jpg5804baeca4d6b64cc9677b2dfc7cc68e.jpg9a39a5d1fed7d8c4b4f5a30a3270c5a8.jpg

Where would one find new "face inserts" for the jaws?

Thanks, Marc

MD: looks like a great little Littlestown vise. usually those are open screw light duty vises, but it looks like your screw is covered. is it? I wouldn't replace the jaws on that vise and i'd make or buy some copper or aluminum jaw covers and save the money to buy a bigger vise later if you need a little more clamping power.

welcome

VA: YOU HAVE SEARCHING SKILLS. WELL DONE AGAIN. you might not have solved the mystery totally, but you sure helped and tried to. thanks

Chilang, not a bad looking Reed , but looks like he/she has welded a socket to the swivel base tightener, and the original swivel jaw pin is now a bolt.---Some items that could be used as bargaining leverage.:headscrat

VA I worked that angle and got them down to $ 400 they were asking $600 I offered $300 and that was streaching it for me. It does have a $100 stand . I have spent a lot more on a lot less in my life but I think I just need to let this one go.

Thanks!

I cringed at drilling into the benchtop but, it's bolted all the way thru with fender washers on the bottom and nylocks. My original plan was to put in nutserts to make it removable but figured it would just as much trouble to remove either bolted thru the bench or nutserted.

So, now that I have finished my Record 74 resto, and Record 75 resto, I thought I'd post a few comparison pics between three "red records" in case it's of general interest.

And for context, here's some info on the vices that I posted elsewhere a little while back:

Red enamel was the colour given to a small family of vices:

  • Record Auto Vice No.74 (4" jaws, opening 4.5")
  • Record Garage Vice No.75 (All Steel, Guaranteed Unbreakable, 5.25" jaws, 7" opening)
  • Record "Imp" Table Vice No.80 (2.5" jaws, opening 2.5")

These red vices all shared certain design features, including:

- solid steel slide with lead screw above
- offset jaws "to admit long and wide work vertically"
- hardened steel anvil
- anvil point
- pipe grips with hardened steel jaws
- pipe and rod bender
- swivel base*

*The Imp has a table clamp rather than swivel

Picked up this Desmond today for $35. This brand does not get the highest accolades next to the big names and maybe it should. This is my first Desmond and this looks and feels like a well made vise.

the DS machinist Vises are right up there. Most DS vises you see are Mechanics vises with the Formed 'U" slide, and that is probably why the less than stellar rep.

Apples and oranges...

Here's my Prentiss Bulldog vise/ It has seen much better days. Previous owner(s) did a bang up job of bending the handle.

I like this vise and I want to refurbish it this summer. Especially after seeing all the nice restored ones on The Garage Journal.

NJ, what Outlaw said.---You and Joe and these $35.00 steals.---How do yaw do it?---That is a really nice one to.---You check those EBay prices for a good #41 and you'll see you just put money in the bank.

An 81s has been on my really really short list for 6 years.---I'm talking less than the fingers on one hand short.---Simplex is up in the top tier.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Motorman, nice Split-Base Bulldog to.---I'm more partial to the split-base cause I think they are a little more classy and dress out nicer.---JMO.

That bent handle is the least of your worries and one of the easiest problems to rectify.---Missing chunks of metal, split slides, those are worries.---I kind of like to see a bent handle when I'm haggling prices.---As long as the bent handle don't point to other damaged parts after inspection.---It makes for a good deductible and I know I can have it strait in 10 minutes.

Moto: I agree with VA that your handle shouldn't be a big issue if the screw and vise nut are ok. it looks like your jaws and back of the slide are in excellent shape and those are usually the problem areas.

Jipps: WELL DONE with the red Record vices.

i'm guessing they need a couple bigger brothers now? :D

Marty: I just lifted up a Desmond vise up onto a shelf and it's a beast. I sold a 61S to a GJ member last year or maybe two years ago and I remember barely being able to lift it into his trunk. nothing cheaply made about them and great find and maybe a keeper. how does it compare to your old Parkers, Wiltons and Reeds? my guess it's in the same league as Outlaw said in so many words.

Drives, I would rank it up there with all the above mentioned but more like a Reed and better than the Parkers.

I have developed a good rapport with a few people who run estate sales and I am on there list to call. They have come to know me as a good customer who does not haggle. I have never asked a lower price, even before they knew me and I stood out. Things got friendlier and one even said " your not like all the other aholes who beat me up on my prices" Now all the prices are very friendly.

Is this worth a look? Wish it was closer, about an hour from me. Wondering if anyone can ID the vise from the pic.

https://southjersey.craigslist.org/atq/5519936139.html

00404_igK5o1X9Ukz_600x450.jpg

Looks to me like something BAD happened to the static jaw on that old vise. Is that a chunk of railroad rail I see??
Nevertheless, the huge pipe vise and the electric motor might be useable to somebody. The boards on the bench are probably tight grain, old growth timbers that should be reused and not sent to the dump.
For $40 I would go see it myself. But depending on what you drive, your fuel might run you more than the price of this deal.

Autopts, you're breaking a lot of hearts with that pic.---They are a Wilton mans dream aren't they.---They weigh 220 lbs.---Mine rolled over on my foot while I was trying to get the slide out and check for a date.---My foot said twice that much but we weighed it, 220.

Those beauties look like NOS.

Nj, around here they kind of expect you to haggle.---They price their goods accordingly just so they can haggle, and look at you dazed and confused if you take them at their asking price.---Haggling is a time honored tradition in these parts.---And that's everything from canning jars to airplanes.---Sounds like you've got a sweet gig established there.---If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
