ID this heavy duty hitch

I helped clear out a shed for my girlfriends dad today. He gave me this 2" hitch. It's really solid and all solid steel. Does anyone know who made it? It has a 2 5/16" ball on it. I put it on my truck and will mostly just use it as a tailgating deterrent but I wanna clean it up and paint it.

Also what are those two little pieces of metal for at the end?

Not really worth much without the bars. Most people would rather handle something that is much lighter if they don't need the weight distribution hitch.

Or when someone else smacks their shin on it. It bugs me to no end that folks leave these in the receiver hitch when they aren't going to tow anything for the next year and a half. Why have a receiver hitch? Just weld the stupid thing to the frame if you are not going to take it off.

I don't walk close to other folks vehicles; so not much chance I'm going to bang my shin on it, but I have seen people walk into them on occasion in the parking lot at work. Just seems like a courtesy to everyone to take the adapter out when not in use. I'm just crotchety about things like that the older I get.

He should install a step, requiring him to remove that and put a hitch on when needed, rather than use what he has that works. Got it.

OP, ever leave a hitch in for a long period ? They can tend to rust, grow and get difficult to get out.

I leave smaller hitches in all the time, large one for the camper I pull off as soon as I am done. I believe in Illinois they made it illegal to have one installed while not towing something. Haven't seen or heard of any tickets for it. As stated I leave my standard hitches in.

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that if any portion of a motor vehicle hitch containing a ball mount and hitch receiver extends more than 4 inches beyond the motor vehicle's rear bumper, then the ball mount must be removed from the hitch receiver when the motor vehicle is not being used for towing. Provides that if any portion of a motor vehicle hitch extends more than 4 inches beyond the rear bumper of the motor vehicle and the hitch is composed of a single assembly that cannot be easily removed from the vehicle, then the ball of the hitch must be covered with a red cover. Defines "ball mount", "hitch receiver", and "motor vehicle hitch".

That piece of flat bar with the small hole sticking out to the side is for a sway bar, that has a small ball that mounts in the hole for the sway bar attachment. I leave my hitch in all the time because I move my trailers around when I mow, and pull trailers about every weekend, they are parked in grass.

I never hit my shins on mine...and I generally always have one in. I use mine to take the garbage cans down the long driveway. I also tow trailers on a weekly basis...

Weight Distributing Hitch. I leave mine on all winter. Have since 1990. Been rear-ended twice with it. No damage to my truck. One car was totaled and the other was able to drive away. Been bumped a few times in the drive thru people trying to get close.

After a few shin bangs you learn to walk wide arcs around all pick-ups.

Mine looks like a little newer version of that on. Has the same type of release system for the bars but the sway bar mount is slightly different. Mine is a 1990 Reese.

I still use mine for the big trailer but with out the Bars on it. I know I shouldn't but I like the ability to adjust the ball height. I made shims to take up the slop in the slotted hole so it is not moving around.
