Bluebomber, I'm assuming that's you in the blue shirt, that's what I've always envisioned:lol_hitti

Nice score on the lift. Like how you unloaded it. Done heavy stuff like that many times.

I also watch Surplus, lot of good stuff, just sad all the school shops being cleared out.
Some are replacing equipment, but I think the majority are just doing away with.

Thanks, CB. Yep, that's me: the man, the myth, the person who's wife tolerates his garage/tool/car habit with a sigh and a roll of her eyes.

This particular votech has a robust automotive program. They were selling off this older front end alignment rack to make room for an engine dyno. The shop teacher said he had reformed the curriculum to update some antiquated ideas on what automotive students should be taught. They are rebuilding motors, trannys, rear axles, etc. Made me want to sign up!

I've been subscribed to PublicSurplus.com for a few years, ever since I bought a bunch of used fireman jackets. Well, two weeks ago, a nearby votech school was offering a Hunter drive-on lift for an opening bid of $2500. On a whim, I threw down a bid, because I've always wanted a lift. My ceiling is too low for a traditional two-post, but a drive-on parallelogram one would be okay. Turned out I was the only bidder! Gulp--that meant I had won...and now had to go disassemble and transport it. Total price with taxes and fees was $2950.

After talking to the shop teacher, I borrowed a buddy's trailer and my son, and left work early today to go get it. The shop teach was awesome, and used his forklift to help disassemble and get the parts loaded.

I get it all the time... :ninja:

It has been quite a while since i have posted anything, but garage sale season has officially begun in my neck of the woods. Stopped by one yesterday afternoon, between work appointments, and found some goodies in a mess of an old garage.

image.jpg1_zpsegri4ct0.jpg

Body hammer, grinder wheel, Empire adjustable square, plug ends, and a bunch of consumables, like drywall screws, roofing screws, a bag of Roloc discs, and light switches. Perfect for this summers shop build. $13 for all you see. Not a screaming deal, but not to bad.

And my favorite item is this vintage tape dispenser. Cast iron, weighs a ton, tons of character. Perfect in my wifes classroom or in our future backyard shop.

BTDT !
I know that "Oh, S**t !" feeling of panic. Back in '88 I put a "What the heck, someone will outbid me" bid on an '86 Prelude at a repo auction, then promptly forgot about it. Three weeks later I got a call that I had three days to pay for the car and pick it up. How the hell does a 24yo come up with $8600 in 3 days (legally) ? He pulls his nuts out of his throat, walks into the Credit Union where every member of his family kept their money, and then BLUFFs his way into a 6 month instant loan. Then he sells his old car and works his *** off at 3 jobs to pay it back in 3 months. I haven't placed a "Just for fun" bid since, and I don't think I ever will. :lol_hitti

Nice score on that lift BB.

Another auction today . This was a machine shop and "Frank" was there... Frank is a buyer that EXPORTS to destinations outside the US. I really don't like the guy... or what he does but his check book is unbeatable. I don't know if any of you guys run into this sort of buyer but myself self and a couple other guys consider taking "Frank" out behind the machine shed... and get frank with him.
Anyway for 107 this is what I ended up with from 1 garage sale, one flea market and one auction.

Starrett Student machinist book 1968

After two days of rain the sun came out and so did the yard sellers.

Not a ton, but a worthwhile run.

I may drop back by this one:

I spent $25 on: A 12" Mitutoyo dial caliper, Small Disston back saw, double fist driver, 2 GAM nesting drivers sets, a battery dissconect, some small vise grips, a cast iron wall decoration for SWMBO, and a Wissota 6" 1/3 HP grinder. that was $10 of the dael by itself.

Yup, we all have our Franks. I regularly run into several of them. Three of them have tables at the local flea market. The only one I actually like is named, well ....... Frank ! He's the guy I snagged a post vise mounting bracket out from under his nose just before he bought the vise. The others, I don't bother to learn their names, I just know in advance that my day is going to **** when I see their names at the top of the list when I go to get a number.

I drove my wife to a moving sale. It is in a nice expensive neighborhood. Got this Craftsman made in US vice for $10. I have been looking for a vice for a long time, so this is very exciting.

I planned on going to 7 sales this morning, but I woke up late and had to scrap two of them due to time and wrong direction. The 5 sales that were left were all worthless. Fortunately, I came across 2 TOO's while running around. I ended up spending $16.

- unknown outdoor propane burner ($5)
- 3 strands of 10awg THHN wire (EDIT : 81') (one less excuse for not installing the 220v circuit)
- 40w & 60w light bulbs
- Proto #3716 1/2" Flair Nut Line Wrench (pebble)
- W. Rose bullhorn jointer (masonry tool) (still has concrete on it.)

Tomorrow - a "Divorce Sale" with tools. (run by the husband, I'm thinking the prices will be high)

I got this Senco nailer for $20 today at my first garage sale visited this year....guy said he only used it for two projects and I believe him....its older but is mint. I've been thinking of buying a finish nailer and would never have bought a $200+ gun like this unless it fell into my lap priced less than Harbor Freight

Hoping for a "You ****!".

See Rule #1.

From the first post in this thread -
I would also like to remind the membership of Rule #1.
You cannot **** yourself, nor can you ask for, or imply suckage.
To do so, prohibits the awarding of such honors.
"You ****" is an honor that can only be spontaneously bestowed by other members without solicitation.

Rule #2 is …………… See Rule #1

You did get a good deal though.

Wow... you really ****! Every once in a while I told my wife that my dream is to own a lift like this because while I enjoy tinkering on our cars, as I am getting older I do not like the process of jacking up the car manually. To own a lift in my garage would just be awesome.

I'm not talking about flippers. Heck I do that. Frank is an exporter to Mexico and China. He's buying mills ,Lathes, grinders ,Vise's, loader, tractors, forklifts..ect... anything he can get his hands on and uses the small stuff to fill the trucks or containers around the bigger stuff.

Oh, you mean he's a scrapper! <spits> That's unacceptable for vintage, desirable steel!

Most likely not a scrapper, he is probably reselling the tools to foreign countries for major profit. There are a couple bigtyme buyers that come to the state auction here and do that. They mostly come for the pallets of computers but often make their way to the tools and medical section to buy what they want at any cost. You can just about give up when it's one of them bidding against you, their pockets are deep. I will still run them up to my highest though just so they don't get a deal...

Didn't find much up here. Did pick up a few things. Rosco Screwdriver, Vaco Nut Drivers, couple of body hammers, a little drawer pull, and I couldn't resist the Chief Pontiac bottle (yes it's Avon...full.) So you're not the only one Outlaw
I have a thing for Pontiacs if you couldn't tell...$8

Davefr: Nice score on the SK-Wayne. And my Step-Dad has the same drill. They are pretty cool.

I had to make run for fence boards, so my daughter and SWMBO came, and I went back to my first stop (since they were still pulling stuff out when I left) , as well as another place that had a chair the daughter unit was interested in.

So I found an electric power Unit" and port-a-power, he wanted 10 for that (one cord at least needs replaced...) and I asked about a much better mail box than the one I found last week, and it was $5! its an aluminum repro, but that's OK. and SWMBO found the wrought iron shelf. it had the remnants of a particle board top but I left that.. I'll make something nicer for this.

At the Block Sale where the chair was, I found these at the a yard sale across the street that had not been open in the morning for a buck!

An Indestro ratchet, Craftsman 10mm socket & combo, one part of a GAM driver, a water pressure gauge, and a wood/brass Lufkin caliper

Exactly Nine, He's gathering container loads and truck loads of our vintage tools to ship the Mexico or China so they can keep taking our jobs. Frank is no rookie and knows when he's being ran so he'll drop 1 or 2 on us if we aren't carefully. There are a couple of auctioneers that tend to miss his bid sometimes to keep a balance. Other wise we all leave

The stuff is really cheap too. The clamps are 25 cents to $5, pliers and vice grips starting at 25 cents, looks like the vintage craftsman boxes on the floor are only $5 . This might be a big score!

What do you guys think about this estate sale next week? You can see all the prices in the ad it looks like pretty decent prices for the stuff. Anything catch your eye i missed? You guys are a lot better at this then me.

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/tls/5553809606.html

I'd be looking at the big forged C-clamps, the tool boxes, and maybe the fasteners. I wouldn't be tempted by the power tools unless you need one--they don't look old or new enough to be worthwhile to flip.
