Been a slow couple weeks for me, but I did pick up this CP 1/2" impact at a yard sale for $20 today. Also scored a pretty nice Maytag washer and dryer set for $75 which is very fortunate since my old washing machine was broken (and the replacement parts cost more than the machine is worth.) Now the wife has me repainting the laundry room while the machines are out...

They really don't cater to use working stiff weekend warrior guys here in MN.
I got lucky last Thursday at a sale in south Minneapolis that was advertised on Craigslist instead of Estatesales.net. The guy had worked at Sears. I filled up a box with Craftsman tools and only paid 15 bucks. Got a lot of stuff I was looking for.

Most of the guys i see at these sales are retied mixed with a few guys in there mid 30's!
I've seen the same older gentlemen at these sales, and they always have huge piles when they check out. I don't have the patience to wait in line.

I do if the sale is good enough. But now that summer is coming your really going to have to wake up early to be first in line. You can still get deal on 50% off day if you go right when they open. That is how i get a lot of my tools .

They probably are hucking their finds on CL, FB, and the various flea markets around. Tough way to make a few extra bucks.

I'm one of the mid 30s guys at those types of sales, not looking to buy stuff to flip (but I will sometimes sell stuff off if times get tough), just trying to build my dream garage on a shoestring budget.

You're pulling our legs, right? Let's see more pics of the tools.

If you didn't misplace a decimal point, then you **** hard, like golf ball & garden hose hard.

Edit: okay, I looked at the picture on my laptop and see the box isn't a high end set. Still, that's an amazing price if it came with all the hand tools you described.

What do you guys think about this estate sale next week? You can see all the prices in the ad it looks like pretty decent prices for the stuff. Anything catch your eye i missed? You guys are a lot better at this then me.

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/tls/5553809606.html

Those prices look really good.

I'd grab those long lineup punches and then check out the pliers and grab what looks like some Klein and maybe even a Thomas and Betts crimper. Those hex key sets look like a name brand.

Check out the adjustable wrenches. The ones in the corner could be Diamond with the green coating. Also pick up those vise grips if they're Petersons and cheap.

I'd also check out the files and see if they're a name brand and look good.

Don't forget to look for piles of sandpaper and other consumables. (damn stuff is expensive if store bought)

I'd also look at those Tiki faces and maybe that propane heater.

Its an aluminum repro, but that's OK. and SWMBO found the wrought iron shelf. it had the remnants of a particle board top but I left that.. I'll make something nicer for this.

Outlaw, even though the mail box is aluminum and not cast iron, for $5, if you decide you don't want it, no harm no foul. Nice find!

Lines, no.
What you get are a bunch of vultures circling the end of the driveway waiting for the sale to open. Every now and then one gets bold and goes up to peruse the carcass, until chased off while the kill is still being staged. Eventually the guardian gets tired and let's the vultures descend, just to put an end to the misery. Get there early, you want to be one of the lead birds. While feeding, grab what you can first, then look at it after and decide. If you hesitate, someone else will be stealing it out from under your beak.

Yeah since the prices are easily visible there is no mystery of what the prices are. Will probably bring my mom to help. These guys act like your best freind in line but once the sale opens the will trample you like your nothing. Made that mistake on the vintage craftsman sale and he stole everything from me before i even knew what hit me.

It's not personal, they are there for the same reasons you are. My experience with other buyers over the years is that most are friendly and talkative while waiting for the sale to open, but once it's on it's every buyer for themselves. Again, we're all there for the same reasons and you've got to take care of number one. The "thief" you referenced didn't steal from you, he gave you an education just like Jake did above.

I know i just have to get better when the doors open. I think i am ready before the doors open but once the sale starts i am a mess and that is why i lose the good stuff.

You're right. I've had some great conversations with many of the regulars while waiting, and learn a lot about them and the things they look for. I've even found a few things for them and handed them off to the guys (to get on a better footing with them).

BUT, those conversations aren't always just to pass the time. They're sussing you out as well. They want to know what kind of competition you are. If you're at a sale for a specific item, never let on about it. They'll grab it before you even know where it was hiding.

Likewise. I wish I would've known about these sales when I was in my 20s and buying cheap low quality tools out of necessity. I don't flip what I buy, I want quality USA made tools that I can pass down someday.

Whoops, with all the banter about strategies I forgot to post this mornings finds.

Nothing big, the "Divorce Sale" turned out to be a regular yard sale. The tools that were advertised were either invisible, or homeowner junk. So, off to the flea market I went. I ended up spending $15. Expensive for me, but sometimes you just have to pay up. :dunno:

2 - near full rolls of 6" shrink wrap (free at the yard sale)

Bronze (?) hammer (no BeCu markings)
Plvmb #1220 5/8" combo wrench (pebble)
Sturtevant/Richmont (USA) model M-50-1 3/8dr torque wrench
........... w/ Armstrong #11-951 40 ft-lbs Max Torque 3/8"-1/4" adapter

Look like a handful of the fordge c clamps. I haven't caught a good sale like that around here in a while.

I've had guys tell me don't worry, I'm here with my wife to get xxxxxx, guess where they rushed to.

I guess my looks to lead to a dish or furniture buyer:lol_hitti, as I usally never give them my targets.

I like to have fun with them after it's obvious what there after. " man, I wish my wife was after tools like this " or whatever.
Like it's been said, it's the hunt and being around people.

2 sales. 1 yesterday and 1 today. Today I picked up the fire extinguisher and camp broiler. $5 for both.

Yesterday I got sloppy seconds at what in previous weeks must have been good. The sellers brought out the balance of fathers estate. 2 rifle scopes. Lead ladle. Saw (very old). Allied puller set. Random box of "stuff" He-He. Not a **** price but good enough for me. $65 for all.

Found a little bonus in the pullers. This one from Proto. But missing one arm. And the unidentified little guy.
