"tooth count wars" Matco 88!

I was just reading my new Motor Age magazine, seems Matco just came out with an 88 tooth ratchet series............................a few pages later I saw Snap-on has a swivel head 100 tooth ratchet hmmm. Guess maybe I wasn't dumb in waiting to buy a Snap-on 80 series, since Matco now holds the tooth count record in slim head, 3/8 ratchets. Snap-on 100 tooth count is only in the one pivot head style, that I cannot stand.

We will have to compare the SO 80 to the Matco 88!

How many teeth does your wife have? Do you feel that she needs more? Do you feel the need to replace her because of this?

I doubt you can actually feel any difference from 8 more teeth. I was doing front brakes and seals on an old Ford F600 today and I was using my SLFH80 to tighten the axle nut and It felt like the ratchet was about to break. I got kind of worried and just grabbed the 3/4" el cheapo ratchet.

One of my genious co-workers has the same ratchet but with the locking head and he decided it was a good idea to tighten a frame bolt with his impact gun while holding the other end with his ratchet. Broke instantly. Then he goes for the breaker bar. What popped into his mind, I dunno.

AFAIK just like the MATCO and Armstrong versions of the 60 tooth ratchets they wont have a quick release, they are just now hitting the trucks starting with the 3/8" ratchets from what Dave said on here.

I prefer mine without teeth, they eat less and if bitten by them during a good old fashion domestic dispute they are less likley to draw blood.

I've noticed my dual 80s has a definite, different "feel" to them; compared to my 36 tooth 900 and earlier series ratchets. I'm wondering if this sense that they are "weaker" is psychological; while I haven't gone crazy with them or used breaker bars on them, so far they have been great. I do know the secure feeling that the 36 tooth ratchets give you; this probably factors into this "feeling". Since, most of use have used and grown up with the courser toothed ratchet for so long. So much of tool usage, appreciation and use of force to get the job done... is based upon this tactile "feeling"; to change this, is a big difference and takes some getting used to. Many, on here swear the dual 80s are weaker.... time will tell but Snap-On's own in house R/D seems to proven otherwise. You can research and do R/D all day but the "feel" of something is different, then any specification or ft. lb. rating can provide...

The demo unit that came in today is a 1/2 drive. The pawl has 17 teeth. I snapped some pics & will post them in the morning. I'm still waiting for my ratchets.

On topic: Can't wait to update my 60 tooth ratchets to 88...I love the 60 Tooth ratchets (Frequently I'll grab them over my Dual 80s) They are lower profile and I like the handles..pics by request

I'm real excited about the 88, I like the handles on the Matco ratchets...........pretty much the same shape as Armstrong. I don't buy from Snap-on unless I have to. Cornwell has no fine tooth ratchets, glad Matco will.

I have always had to deal with Matco, online and they have always been good. No Matco dealers up here in my area.

Not worried about the catalogs. My invoice for the ratchets came in overnight. I guess that means I'll have them in Tuesday or Wednesday. My fingers are crossed.
