Harley Theme Wilton 500

Drives convinced me to do a Harley theme on my 1959 Wilton 500. It was in pretty good shape when I got it, just needed a dust cap and a good cleaning. I made an aluminum billet dust cap, and freshened the original jaws on the surface grinder. Originally I was thinking classic black and orange Harley colors, but when I saw it I changed to hammered copper (and hammered black). The logo plate was an added touch, verdict still out on that...

Delete your posting, run not walk over there, and buy it. I'm serious about deleting it off this board until it's in your hands

Would anyone of you guys please give me some guidance regarding this N0.98 Prentiss Bulldog please? Im going to swing over in an hour to meet him.

I don't know if there are some known issues to look for or just abuse issues..what a decent price would be?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.uploadfromtaptalk1463508090240.jpguploadfromtaptalk1463508094896.jpguploadfromtaptalk1463508102484.jpg

If it is a Bulldog # 98, it is a once in a lifetime chance you will have at one. At double what he is asking it is a steal, make sure you do not leave without it!!!

(The most notorious problems for Prentiss is a split running down the slide; from the pics, this one looks like no problem. If if there was, it can be fixed and still worth getting)

Watson: JROBB is giving you good advice. you can't put DIBBS on a vise just by posting it on the vise thread before you buy it especially one that could be 320 pounds. it's had some abuse though and you might not have noticed that it's missing a good chunk of the back of the static jaw. if it was dropped or beat on that much make sure the screw and vise nut are ok. if cheap enough i'd even buy THAT one for parts.

Joe: WELL DONE

MP: I bet every other work bench I see has one of those old medium duty Craftsman vises on it. it's a solid little vise and nothing better to fix a vise with than a bigger vise like your Morgan. good luck

Got a small 3" jaw Red Arrow 31 with swivel and anvil base, as well as pipe jaws.

No Columbian name marked on other side, so believe this is from the 1930's.

Will need to keep an eye out for a replacement swivel base, as can see in last picture where prior owner broke a section out.

Mike

Drives-I have only one Hollands vise, and I'm with you. Well made, great design top to bottom. Top notch. I'd like more to, but bee careful....as somebody says, or your home/shop foundation will eventually not support the weight of all the iron! ;)

Joe-good work. If I had that emmert, Itd be the centerpiece on our dinning room table, or permanently fixed to our coffee table. Sooo nice. Vise looks good on that stump to! Maple?

OK just been looking at this thread so I decided I wanted to try restoring a Vise. I don't really care what they're worth, just seems like a fun hobby.

I can get this one from a friend, what can you tell me about it? What's it worth, what year, etc..? I don't really know much about them

SH: if it didn't have that weld and maybe a few other issues that vise might be worth $40 as is and maybe $100 restored. with a weld probably half that depending on your area.

EG: yep those Holland's are nice well made old vises. good luck in your search.

thanks, he said i can have it for 30 so i'll take it. figured it would be a good one to get me started and learn. not really looking for a huge value right now. good news is i can grind that weld down, guy i'm buying it from is a welder by trade, he can probably do a much better job and i can make it look like its not even there after a little more grinding. now gotta convince the wife to let me get a sandblaster

Outlaw: I haven't seen it in person. i'm guessing not too thick wall of pipe. It's for sale, but i'm not interested in buying it if anybody wants to pm me for the link or check out CL in my area. it's a 2+ hour drive one way which for the RIGHT VISE wouldn't be an issue, but sorry no time to pick it up for one of you this week in case you NEED it.

SH: at least you are going into with your eyes open. funny thing about sandblasters are that then you'll need to buy a bigger compressor and then bigger cabinet and then a bigger shop and on your way into that RABBIT HOLE. enjoy the ride and just letting you know to hang on.

cheers

You don't need a cabinet. Just get one of the $50 kits from Sears - includes a gun and a plastic hopper to put sand in (http://www.shopyourway.com/craftsman-50-lb-sandblaster-kit-with-1-4-in-ceramic-nozzle/285049).

You can blast it in the driveway. Put a tarp down to reclaim all the sand when you're done and re-use it. Also, may want to use Black Beauty (coal slag, probably fine grit) or something similar. Silica sand is know to cause silicosis. Wear a dust mask and eye protection, of course.

If that won't work, get after it with a wire brush on your drill. Or remove the paint with Aircraft Stripper (aerosol or liquid) and then get after the rust with wire brushes and sandpaper.

Lots of different ways to skin this cat. The less expensive ones just usually involve a bit more manual labor...

So apparently I had bought a pretty rare vise recently for $5 and didn't even notice. Here it is. It's an FPU polish made of vise....

Joe-I thought silver, but rare do I see a single stem silver like that.

G man-135 parker? Nice.

You know im an idiot. It was a a Red Maple - acer rubrum NOT sylvestrus (im doing this from memory so cut me some slack on the latin names). That stump came from one of its branches and weighs about 200 lbs. Im sure when you looked at the bark you doubted my classification. Sorry to have led you astray.

Scott, dismantle the vise , buy 4-5 gallons of simple green, buy a Home Depot bucket with resealable top for $10 and you are good to go. Put the vise in the bucket for 3-4 days and all the paint comes right off.

Simple green is completely biodegradable and completely safe. BEST way to remove paint. I detest blasting as it removes material. Look at the pics of the emmert 6a i just posted. That was simple greened, cleaned with a wire wheel/brush and then blo'd.

Joe-I'm judging! :) when I took the exam for to become a certified arborist, Latin was nixed from the test. I got a 98% on the 200 question test...but safe to say it's been way way lower if Latin was involved as it once was. It may just be me, but I love the pictures you guys take of vises outside in nature. You and va. Great visual contrast. I gotta start doing that on a cedar/juniper stump or something. What do you do with the s.green mixed with the removed paint?

Gman- don't think it could be a 900 series.

Wow, flow of fpu vises rolling in!
