Very nice.

What do you plan to do with the handle? Heat it up and use a hydraulic press to bend it back straight?

Picked up a pair of bullets yesterday in Lake Zurich, Il.

The larger one is 4.5 and the smaller is 3.5.

Would the red one have been a Snap On vise?

Anyone have any ideas on the vintage of these or can you let me know how I can tell?

Both will get restored. The little guy has plastic jaws and the larger one has brass jaws, so both will get replaced with original stuff.

Thanks

Scott

Both are pretty much disassembled at this point. Plan to renew/restore over the next week or so.

Question - would the bronze jaws in the 4.5 have been knurled or just kept smooth? They are a bit chewed up, but plan to clean them up on the belt sander. Don't know whether to leave them smooth or not.

BTW - if anyone has a spare swivel base for the 3.5" vise, please pm with condition and price.

Loyd: that handle doesn't look original and since you might not NEED to use that vise for a while it might be worth making a new handle for it or have somebody like Ritzblitz make you one like he has for so many members already.

AWESOME FIND and looks like that big magnet you installed in your home is sucking up the big ones nicely lately. congrats

MR. P: I really don't care that you only paid $5 for it or that you didn't know that you had bought a great vise, but if you clean that up you'll find out soon enough. I love mine

looks like i may be SOL. wife doesn't want me to do the electrolysis thing with our boy running around, and i need a bigger compressor for a blast cabinet (i have a 30 gal)

What is her exact objection?
Electricity? Most run theirs on 12v so not dangerous.
The chemicals? It's just washing soda and once it's mixed with water it's no more dangerous than the washing machine in the house.
The dirt? Surely it's less messy than blasting.
It's certainly less noisy than blasting as well.

Just curious, not intending to get you in trouble with the Mrs.

What do you do with the s.green mixed with the removed paint?

i took the test in 1976. i'm disappointed to hear the Latin was nixed on your test. the number of times I saw the same tree with multiple names was very high. The Latin names never change....

simple green? straight out f the bottle undiluted. try it. you'll be hooked!

Brass tools were often made for applications where you don't want sparks because of flammable gases in the environment. In the case of your vise I figure it is more due to it being "softer" than steel jaws and less chance of damaging anything you clamp in it, although not as soft as copper jaws.

My guess is they were smooth to leave no marks.

Drives yea the magnet seems to be working well right now can't wait for the next big vise to get here! Not worried about the handle right now I'll probably end up making a whole new one.

Scott, dismantle the vise , buy 4-5 gallons of simple green, buy a Home Depot bucket with resealable top for $10 and you are good to go. Put the vise in the bucket for 3-4 days and all the paint comes right off.

Simple green is completely biodegradable and completely safe. BEST way to remove paint. I detest blasting as it removes material. Look at the pics of the emmert 6a i just posted. That was simple greened, cleaned with a wire wheel/brush and then blo'd.

simple green? straight out f the bottle undiluted. try it. you'll be hooked!

I use a Simple Green soak to strip paint on everything, undiluted.
Filter the debris out after use, and it will still be good for many uses.
I use the same for degreasing as I do for stripping.

Once stripped, the part can go onto a bath of EvapoRust, or CLR (for chromed parts), for derusting.
Rinse in water to neutralize and once dry, a wire wheel will bring it to bare metal.
Filter the ER and this too will be good for many uses.

After the initial purchase, I haven't bought a new gallon of Simple Green, CLR, or EvapoRust for at least two years. I started with about 6 gallons of SG and ER and 1 gallon of CLR. The initial purchases were made over several paydays to ease the expenditure. With losses and evaporation, I'm about due for a Simple Green purchase to restock.

Mark your bottles "dirty" so you and your family know which ones have been used , and which ones are safe for cleaning around the house.

CW: Peddinghaus? I downloaded all of your catalogues (Thanks for doing that) and I don't recall seeing that name. I haven't gone through all the pages in every catalogue yet though.

None that I am aware of, perhaps FALCON jaws just happen to fit?

Any chance of a photo of the grip on the jaws and perhaps we can compare it to the jaws us lot over here have?

yeah sure. heres a couple pictures... i actually broke 3 driver bits in my impact trying to get the other jaw plate off.. its still on there.. i think im going to soak it in something before i ruin the screws and need to extract them.

Another thing I never knew was this doesnt have a floating nut inside.. its one solid cast piece. thats the only vise ive owned like that. is that one way to tell a parkinson? or is there other companies who did that as well.

KM & Z: paramo and I think Record had the solid cast vise nuts. there might be another one or more, but I've only owned a Paramo with one. the English guys might have a better idea.

Outlaw: pretty sure Paramo and maybe Record and other vice companies only did the cast in vise nuts for a few years maybe around WWII. I would think after the company started either getting returns or hearing that maybe the vice nuts were breaking that the companies change their designs to the moving replaceable nuts. just spit balling until somebody that actually read or knows.

ALL: did you know some vise jaws were made of SILVER during the war? I also heard shovels and rakes were made of SILVER because copper and steel were needed for the war and other stuff. I heard it today from a 75 year old that was dead serious and said the maintenance tools had to be locked up at night that were made of silver.

VA: maybe that stainless vise you think you have is made of Silver? or now you have another type of metal vise to be looking for?

EG: nice picture. I know you have leather jaws, but did you tape the handles or do tell?

Just a couple inches of leather to shorten the handle. I don't need a lot of muscle behind the vise with the caps, and quickens things up a bit. Nothing pretty.

I helped a client of mine move for a couple hours and she gave me this old vise for free!!

Spent a hour or 2 today, disassembled it, got it all cleaned up. Couple coats of Rustoleum and Whala! Not bad for a FREEBIE!

Thanks KMScott locking swivels look great on the C0. The ones that came with the base were inferior to what you produce. Form and function nice to see it still exists.

Amazing search skills

It's got something about it then, fits in the German section nicely and requires a closer look when I get a moment.

.....

Pretty sure that all of the Parkinsons Handy range had cast in nuts as well as the infamous ball base vise. I don't personally own any Paramo vices so I'm unsure about those. Most of my other vices are quick release so obviously have a separate half nut but I'll check the Woden and Record non quick release when I get a chance later today.

Silver in it's purest form is pretty soft so would be of no use for tools, perhaps an alloy containing some silver and then polished with a little myth, gossip and fairytale would make for an expensive silver shovel you needed to lock away? ;)
