That's what I figured. If it's just a matter of replacing or installing a pin it's definitely no big deal. The problem is I'm a few hours away from it so I can't actually get my hands on it to examine it. I tried asking the seller, but he doesn't seem to really understand what I'm asking him.

MeatsisIt's been my experience that when the rear separates like that it's due to the slide sticking or freezing. The screw will shear the pin or even strip out the screws on the screw retainer or horse shoe.

Thanks KM it came out of a machine shop. Dated 1 71 so it had some time on it. I am sure it was commercially used until I bought it. It is still a light user. I will fix it up and mount it. Maybe try to drill out the cracks and have a friend weld it.

Forgot to do a before pic dam it. Well it was in decent shape definitely used a few scars but noting terrible used what it was intended for. I did not polish the jaws just sanded to 120 theres a few marks left and hand filed the sides, I think it gives it more of a vintage look whatever that means:dunno:. It has 4.5" jaws and I bet it is close to 65 pounds rotates nice and locks down solid, I like it.

Loyd: WELL DONE SIR!! also like your new avatar. or i think it's new because I don't recall seeing it before.

Chilang: doesn't even look like the same vise. thanks

ALL: i just had a nice old no name clamp on vise in my hand and for $10 i set it back on the table at a sale because the clamping screw was broken. could this be a sign or was it like fishing and just too small so threw it back in?

cheers all and have a great Friday and Weekend

Haven't been on here in a while. A reed 109 with 3 bolt pattern is 290# and the 4 bolt hold down is 297#. Yes I did buy the Reed in Pittsburgh. Some think the price is crazy. I went to a sale recently and a big 8" Prentiss brought 1500. The buyer was happy to get it and put it in his blacksmith shop. To that I say try to find another. I have looked for 15 years and only ever found 4 period counting my two. I have never seen a Reed 209. The vise does have a crack on the tail but I will get that repaired. The other rough Reed 109 is headed to Colorado to have full surgery to get it back in shape.
I look at these big vises as an investment. They will hold their money. Just compare that to a boat, motorcycle or any other toy and they depreciate a lot.

Congratulations on picking up the 109. That's definitely not a vise that comes up for sale often. A few years ago the exact same vise, in mint condition, popped up on Craigslist down in Charlotte NC. Asking price was $350. I was the first to respond to the ad. I spoke to the seller on Wednesday and told him I would drive down there that Friday night. I know I know, I'm crazy for driving to NC all the way from NY, but I knew I'd probably never find another 109. Especially for only $350. So Everything was all set. I called him Friday afternoon right before I was about to get on the road. Apparently someone offered him $400 for it and that POS accepted it. I'm still furious to this day. He never even called to let me know. Or even give me a chance To offer more $.

Joe - I am crazy. It keeps my wife around to see what will happen next! If she had any idea how many tools I have she would have an auction! Ill post pics sometime.
Meatsis- $ 350 :dunno:and you wanted to wait to go!!! You should be arrested! I have been down that road with a 500# anvil. Waited for a more convenient day and the seller sold it without telling me as well. Lesson learned. Your trip
would have been a good road trip story for here. You'll find another back on the east coast.

Demo, you'll get no argument from me.---I've paid over a grand for 4 of my 8'' vises, and was tickled to get them at the prices that I did.---Three of them I haven't seen come up for sale again since I bought mine..---A grand for a 9'' is a really good price considering their rarity.---If I hadn't of been strapped just now, we might have been embroiled in a bidding war.---Just kidding, Your's is the proper home for that monster.---I'm going to squirrel away some $$ and wait for that 209 to raise it's head.---It's just a matter of time.

Nice score demoman! I thought the price was a reasonable ask , made an offer to visit sight unseen. I didn't see a crack and didn't see it live. Hopefully it is a clean fix.

AND, Im in the Pittsburgh area, happy to help facilitate the transfer if I can

It's been a while since I've logged on to the forum, but I thought I'd share this.

Came across a vise at an estate sale today, it did not have a name on it but I thought it looked somewhat like a Wilton but I was sure it was from China. The basement of the sale was very poorly lit, flashlights were needed, lucky for me I had my head lamp with me. The lighting made it hard for all including the Mgr. of the sale. In the ill lighted basement I asked what they wanted and the guy said $20.00, still convinced it was from China, I offered $10, we settled at $15.00.

It wasn't until I made it home and looked the vise up on the net to confirm it was in fact a Wilton.......a 1750 Tradesman I believe. Crazy I got it for only $15.00. Helps make up for my not so good purchases of the past.

After a little research on this site, I may in fact have a Chinese Wilton after all...no "Made in The USA" but no China either

Here is the cleaned up and painted DAWN 4-1/2 cast steel vise. I also included a couple pictures of the nut, as I thought this was interesting. Rather than sitting in a dovetailed slot like almost every other vise I have taken apart, this one has a very stout nut that sits in a cast pocket and bears against a shoulder (or buttress) cast into the static jaw. This seems like a very good bit of engineering.

Anyway, my brother is building a new shop on his farm, and this will make a nice addition to his bench.

Looks like the one that I recently bought from Amazon. Needed something to use until I found something vintage and solid. It was such a POS that I never used it. Gave it away this weekend.

I'm going to swap it out with one of my Parkers. Just need time.

Here's a Wilton Cadet 9135 I bought today. I'm wondering the original color on these? As I started disassembly and paint removal I go from this wintergreen to a orange. I remove the swivel aND find only orange. Can anyone confirm orange was a color because I want to repaint this to its original color. a9cff2e70e023288e54fd02aa4bc3edd.jpg4bce38259ab61b8b8dfb3e305040ee87.jpgdd22ec33fe0cf9e4deeef29a2b38f1f2.jpgfa09edf496a9e6e1d59ecee4eb00be5e.jpg

KZ, are the pipe jaws cast into the jaw towers? If yes, then it might be a China vise. If the pipe jaws are the removable kind, then probably a USA vise. Either way, still an excellent vise and for $15 a killer deal.

Very suckworthy price! Still has the pipe jaws too.

Pull the dynamic jaw out and clean the key on the bottom. Look for a date stamp. I had a 1750 from 1984 that had no country of origin on it. But the level of quality was so high it was obvious it could not have been China at that time.

Let us know what you find.

swivel jaw opinion

I'm in the market for a 3" or 4" swivel jaw vise.
Does anybody have any thoughts on the different manufactures mechanisms?
Robustness?
Wear qualities?
Sloppiness?
I have a 6" american scale that seems to have more play in it than I care for.
The pics I've seen of the prentice and reeds seem like they may be better design?
Thanks
Royce

I have a few Athols and they seem to be right up there with Reed as far as tolerance of slide to frame fit. The old ones have some pretty rough casting as far as appearance goes.

IHmachinery: Thank you!

Oldldh: Thanks for the props......Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

FMC1959: Thank you and yes, the pipe jaws are screwed in. Pic attached.

jreb 10: Thank you as well. Pull the jaw out? Are you crazy? You think I have mechanical skill or something? I'd hate to not be able to get this thing back together. Thanks but for now, I want to keep it together... However, on the bottom of the base swivel there is maybe, a date stamp 10 11 98. Also there is another marking on the bottom...looks like a 2 and a W for Wilton...pics attached.

Also some markings on the static jaw, I believe....111051, a D with maybe an A inside, UX...what's that?

Incredible how this vise is so free of rust.

Thanks to all for looking and your comments.
