Hello all, been lurking for a while and decided to introduce myself. My name is Mike, or mrycar. Am an avid classic car collector, (my screen name holds the clue which type I collect), avid offroader, photographer, and pretty handy with a wrench. I currently reside north of metro-Detroit and hour, in a small township of Almont, MI, originally am from Pennsylvania, and have lived in Kansas, Florida, Georga, Kentucky, Ohio, New Zealand, and several other locations. I am no stranger to Garages, used to work on my dad's combines, excavation equipment, trucks, and anything else mechanical that broke.

Well have joined the site recently as finally having a small garage built to house and restore my toys. Have been 10 years in the waiting due to zoning, not permitting me to build what I want, which is strange, as other than the neighbor across the road, my nearest neighbor is over 1/4 mile away. Am building on a relatively flat, 2.5 acre lot, with the building behind the house, in of course, the lowest spot area around it. The building is a 42'x60'x16' Morton Pole barn, with 3 overhead doors.

I'll be detailing its construction here, and learning a lot from all of you.

Will be adding some posts in and pictures of the progress starting today.

Thanks for letting me kick off my shoes and making this a home.

One of the first problems drainage. The land drained all water to the only spot the township would permit the garage to go. A little ditch digging was in order.

building gets delivered next week.

Most people think this is a monster shop, but grew up with 80x120's for combines, with small machine 80x60 shops, and couple were 60x40 shops.

Thanks to the forum and getting my equipment wishlist in check:

  • Bendpak 10as-lp
    Bendpak hd-9
    Toolvault MTZ-7217MZ with MTZ-7203SL

No not for R factor , to stop wind infiltration, no mater what morton or others tell you air will enter the metal lap joints and kill your R value of any batt insulation. If you spray foam the inside ,disregard.

seems strange you would have zoning issues being out in farmland like that. looking forward to seeing your build

I was just as surprised, 10 years ago after purchasing the place. First it was barn is too big in relationship to house size, then too tall, then not enough acres to make the first two points moot. Neighboring land owner was greedy on land price wanting 34k for 2 acres, then he raised price to 110k for the land after I failed zoning deviation request.

Just when was planning on selling place and moving, township changed the zoning restrictions.

I wish i was closer! I'm also glad to hear the greedy neighbor got it stuck to him with the zoning change. That was really crappy to do. I'm about an hour out of detroit too and prices here are $2500/acre.

It's always a little underwhelming when it all shows up isn't it? I thought to myself, I paid how much? And this is all I get?! Lol.
It's exciting but still.

Morton builds a nice building. They will have it up and done in 4-5 days tops. They dont mess around. Wait until you see the little tractor rig they use. Alot of special one off things that they do. It will be done right for sure.

I would have them do their premium insulation package. I did it on my Morton Building and my highest heating bill was $164 for the month. 10574 sq ft. Kept the office at 68, the car shop and machine shop at 62 and the "cold storage" area at 50 degrees. Only cost $35 to AC everything less the cold storage.

They have a unique way of hanging it so it can't fall down.

I wanted spay foam but the code here is you need a fire barrier and steel interior panels don't count.

I would check it out.

Exterior of building complete, now awaiting overhead doors, interior ceiling and concrete work.

Will be out if town for two weeks, so no updates on status unless neighbor forwards them to me.
