Did a fellow GJ member just now outbid me in the last 10 seconds of the auction to get this baby bullet for $171.50 ?

If so...well played sir!

Nice Massey. I strongly suspect that when Prentiss switched to removable jaws on the bull dog line at the turn of the century. They may have sold there old molds to Massey hence why you don't see very many and the mold quality is usually less then stellar as your photos show. I believe mine was originally japanned black. Also another thought i was having maybe they got the extra molds or something to that effect when Prentiss had a factory fire in 1895ish.

To me, that the pitting on that one looks like it was buried for a decade or three.

I have to agree with Outlaw on this one.---Looks like about 40 years buried in some kind of acidic soil like the red clay we have around here.---Takes longer to pit cast than it does regular pig iron, but given enough time, nature always reclaims it's own.---And that is what that pitting looks like.---JMO.

TOP: of course i like almost any vise with BLO on it, but that little project you just finished with that busted vise is very cool. WELL DONE[/QUOTE]

Drives Hey thanks. I didn't see a reason for paint on a piece like that.

Ok so am I a d##k because I noticed that the Emmert 10 listed on eBay has lots of new pics that intentionally hide the welded/repaired jaw? I am sorry bur IMHO opinion that is disingenuous, and even WORSE when you consider the astronomical price he is asking.

What are the odds a swivel base from a 5" Chicago wilton fits a 4" Schiller park wilton? I just found out it fits. Good thing I kept the base. Now I have 2 complete Wiltons. I just have to find or make the center swivel pin because I lost it. The jaw teeth are perfect, just need to clean up the weld splatter and grind marks. I'm glad I bought both Wiltons yesterday.

Yep, and "vise" versa. I have a 4" Chicago base on a 5" Schiller Park. My base is the kind that only swivels partially around, and it has mounting feet just like yours.

I'm honestly not sure what it is. I loaded it in the trunk when he asked if I wanted it and haven't had a chance to look it over much.

Yes I was amazed at how good it looked. Probably sat in his basement for years and barely got used.

HELP! Trying to buy this 2" vise. Cant figure the maker. Seller semi-knowledgable and wants $$$ for this one. 2" jaws....any idea who makes this? Im on my way to pickup a 4.5" Wilton bullet complete (225) and a 73 1/2 gyro vise, complete (100) when he surprised me with this one. I hate going in blind...

Agreed. It should also be written into the description. Hopefully it was accidentally left off and he will update the ad before someone buys it.

closing on my first home very soon and I'm planning the garage build already. Needless to say a buying vise is going to be an intricate decision.

Wifes uncle just gave this to me. Did alright for free i would say.

Looks like a Union MFG/Parker variant?

The Union/Parker's are my absolute favorite... I use my 954B's even more than my free-to-me Wilton 400S.

I have one with somewhat chewed up jaws that i use for welding, cutting, and blatant abuse - the other is in mint condition with the foil stickers and gets used AND doted upon.

Edit: After looking up the Morgan mentioned above, it appears to be a dead-on match.

Is it a 3"?
I just got one for $40.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the vise in question is an 820. Maybe I should have had a stronger secret high bid. :dunno: Maybe I read about too many of Joe Striper's fantastic scores for only pennies.
Some may consider the 3 inch ones baby but not me.
I have a 3 incher like yours on a shelf waiting for a base to go with it. Mine is Chicago era dated 1946 Model 3HD

Welcome and thanks for poking your head into the door.
If you are following this thread you realize that your posting is an understatement! ;)

outlaw and va.:
I agree with you guys about the likelihood of being buried for a long while. I bought a 4 inch Athol that I know for a fact was buried in the mud in a scrapyard for more than 2 years. It doesn't look nearly that pitted.

askme:
I love the patina of age on that one. If I were you, I wouldn't paint that guy. Just wipe it with thin coats of BLO (boiled linseed oil) to keep away the rust. The few rusty areas can be addressed by using a Scotchbrite pad to rub in the BLO.

Almost definitely a Morgan or one of the clones. It has the right swivel base shape, right U shaped jaws, same spindle, etc, etc.

I just finished up this Starrett 924 today. Wow is this a TIGHT vise. beautifully made machined right down to the specially made spindle nut keeper.

I made the jaw insert screw and hand ground the sides until they fit properly and then polished them. Much better than the original screws.

I painted this with Dupli-Color caliper paint. We will see how it holds up. 1/2 an hour in the oven at 225 set the paint up nice and really smoothed it out. I know the lettering needs to be done but my hands just don't want to cooperate.

Well anyway, it is RED. REALLY RED and no I didn't push the color at all in my editing software.:lol_hitti

Came across this swivel base York 150 on Craigslist just now.

http://frederick.craigslist.org/tls/5649847870.html

Too bad it's a 4 hour drive one way from me and I won't get another day off til the middle of next week...

Perhaps somebody on here will be able to get it. It looks to be in remarkably good shape.

Did another quicky restore, this time on the York 100. Basic clean up, remove the rust, didn't even have to remove all the original paint, just smoothed it out a little. Last pic shows my quick and dirty solution to keep the vise centered over the swivel base, just drilled some holes for 1/8" roll pins. The jaw inserts were pretty beat, smoothed them out as best as possible on the disc grinder. For some reason looks kind of orangey in the pics, but it's actually more like Arrest Me Red, maybe the lighting or something. Would like to fill in the depressions around "York" with a contrasting color, not sure I'm artistic enough for that, we'll see.

Anyone know who made this vise? I cannot engage the release lever. I need to research the manufacturer.

Joe,
I'm going to guess that it's a Sheldon vise that has the quick release feature. Probably made in the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
I really like them.

I found it! It is an Entwistle and Kenyon Instantaneous Grip vise. Late victorian period. Very interesting vise but its missing a cog which affects its performance.

Forddriver, that's a good deal on that York 150.---They are real beefy and stout, and if I didn't already have one I would be on it like a fat kid on a cupcake.---He did say OBO.---That's a good deal in the making.---They really are good vises, IMO.

Anyone have any idea what manufacturer of this vise might be? Owner says he doesn't see any marking and from looking through image.google.com I haven't run across anything like it either.
