Joe:
That one looks to be in good shape, except for what sellers like to call "only surface rust...EZ to remove"
Please educate me regarding maker and purpose of that vise. I assume specialized blacksmithing? :dunno:

I plead dumb ignorance on this one. I have no clue what that thing is for. I can imagine a million uses. The dynamic jaw opens REALLY HUGE. I would like to see two on a wall about 36" apart for handling big projects. They are lightly made but open wide. They could probably support 60lbs each. The nice thing is they fold flat to the wall when not in use.

MY NEXT STATEMENT IS SACRILEGE AND FOR THAT I BEG FORGIVENESS FROM THE GROUP...

If I could find two I'd make a copper over wood top for it and then mount it in the house for a liquor table, with the two vises cleaned and BLO'd.

Thanks Blue.---That is going in my files for posterity.---Don't know how you fellows dig up all these old ads but I sure am glad yaw know where to look.---Without the research and evidence, the facts are like Granny's cooking, lost to time/microwaves.

So the seller was correct about Indians and Trentons, of the which I owe him an apology, but what about Columbian vises.---He said they made them to.

Grouseman: Here's a 1923 ad showing that Columbian did make leg vises. It also shows Indian Chiefs. (Peter Wright gets a mention too.) So did the seller mean that Columbian also made leg vises or that they also made Indian Chiefs? Or was he confused by ads like this?

CRS, the seller didn't say Columbian leg vise, just Columbian vise, Trenton Anvils, ect.

That particular AD you posted is probably a Hardware Store Ad which means they would sell various brands of leg vises, anvils, bench vises, ect. all under one roof.

Indecently Columbian leg vises are probably the most common leg vise of all.

Where I think he got off base was saying that (Columbus Forge And Iron Co.) was the company that made Columbian Vises.---But again, who am I to say?:dunno:---For right now I'm going to side with Blue that C F And I made Indian Chief Vises, and Trenton Anvils, but that Columbian Vise Co. made the Columbian Vises until I hear different.

Here is the way the ad reads on EBay.---See what you think.

I found no link between Columbian and Columbus Forge and Iron in my research. Columbian also was around way after Columbus went away in the 1950's.

grouseman: I found that ad while I was trying to find information about Joe's latest oddball vise (Sorry Joe, nothing yet). I just thought I'd post it in case it was pertinent. In fact, it is a hardware store ad and it's from Canada. What is this world coming to if you can't depend on Ebay ads for accurate information?

On a related side note. I visited a small forge yesterday with some friends. The smith gave us quite a bit of information. He was very nice and seemed pleased to have us listen. He was so nice that I waited until after we left to tell my friends that much of what he was said was, shall we say, inaccurate. He did have some great tools including a hell of a nice leg vise. I don't know who made it.

Picked up this "little guy" tonight. Shock therapy worked, I havnt bought a vise in over a year but for $120 I couldn't say no. And it's not got a scratch on it, anywhere.

I will get more details about this guy tomorrow hopefully. I'll ask Morgan about it, it looks like the current swivel base fits, but it's the same as the current production style. 3 mounting holes but you can take the swivel on or off at will. I also havnt seen the 6" before instead of 60. I'm guessing it's a late model Chicago model, there are a few other pics of them on here so it's not the first. It's a beast, 120-130 lbs I'm guessing. And slight correction, almost a year since my last purchase. I think I snagged my Morgan Chicago 150 last July. Jaws are perfect on this one, slide is untouched, and the handle is poker straight with no hammer marks.

That's how I found it. But I'm very selective on top of the fact that there isn't much out there this year at all.

I think I found one of the most beat down rock islands no 574. Such a shame but still wonder the story behind it http://stlouis.craigslist.org/tls/5622684707.html

Flav: i'd say it's a weld on the dynamic. that said the rest of the vise looks pristine so i'd probably buy it for a parts vise if it was priced decently. if i was going to buy it for a parts vise and if it was more than $40 i'd want to take it apart and see if the vise nut and screw had some damage too because breaks like that usually cause more than a few problems.

454: maybe the seller has a chair next to his Athol?

If a vise like that comes along, even if you have taken a pledge, I'm afraid you just HAVE to buy it. Don't feel guilty...If you really need to seek some kind of forgiveness, just pledge to sell one for every one you buy.

flavc3:
I have a Reed 204 swivel base with the ball shaped nose. If you need a pic of the dynamic jaw, to compare shape, just let me know.

Your collection just keeps getting better and better.

Cool, unfortunately I think you are correct Sir, it appears welded, good eye, too bad if it is...

Good Luck!
Take care!

I just happen to be working on a 404 now. Made a new handle and cleaned up the other pieces.

You might get some nice svěrák York in Czech Republic through sbazar.cz or aukro.cz

Here we go again. I left Serbia without picking up an anvil or a vise. Now I'm in Prague and stuff is looking affordable here...

How about a nice 6" (actually 5.9"/150 mm) York for $135, with workbench? http://www.sbazar.cz/namisko/detail/17650042-prodam-original-kvalita-sverak-york-150mm

As for anvils, we're close to $1/lb here -

How 'bout a 220 pounder for $287? http://www.sbazar.cz/davidnovacek11/detail/17466625-kovadlina

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! 330 lbs for $286! http://www.sbazar.cz/DilnaRoJan/detail/16952839-prodam-kovadlinu

Need to see what I can pick up...

Ciao,

Scott

Pretty work GET.---Did that one have a swivel pin or did you have fabricate one?

I took as many of the dings out of it as I could without carving it down to nothing. A hundred year old lathe will only do so much.

Ciao,

If you pick up either of the anvils, you'd better get some help, 'cause either of those could make you "pick up" a hernia! ;)
