Does anyone have hands on experience with this impact? I am not interested in Milwaukee or any other brand, as I have several DeWalt 20V Max tools and batteries.

I'd really suggest looking harder at dcf899 instead of the dcf889. I've used both, albeit briefly, and the 899 is the serious competitor in half inch cordless impacts, the 889 is not.

Thanks, I had looked at the 899 some time back, and got the two confused. There is no contest between the two.

In that case, you're already in Dewalt 20 Volt, you want a half inch impact, there's no question, get it. It's a contender among the best.

I found a brand new dcf899 on cl for $200 about 6 months ago so I jumped on it. Best tool purchase I've made in a long time. This thing is amazing. Get the one with the friction/bull ring. It makes changing sockets a lot quicker and easier. I have a snap on mg725 and a 3/4" drive aircat 1600, but haven't used either one since buying the Dewalt. It is extremely impressive. I promise you won't be disappointed.

I only have a 1.5ah and a 3ah for batteries, but haven't had a problem. I know mechanics that use these tools daily and the 3ah batteries will last a few days without needing a charge. The 5ah I've heard will go a week, but they're too expensive IMO. I bought my 3ah for $45 on eBay. I could have two for less than one 5ah.

I got mine on eBay from CPO for $199. I wanted the bull ring, but all I found was the detent pin. I'm probably going to leave a 3" extension on it for flip lug nut sockets.

You lose a lot of torque when you use extensions. I doubt it will affect lug nuts though... Just sayin.

I understand. This is for the flip sockets. Actually, when my hands are clean and dry I can get sockets off fairly easily, so except for some lug nuts, I'll probably skip the extension unless needed.

I also own this tool, also because I was already invested in the 20v max tool lineup. I have the one with the Detent pin, very nice, stout, plenty of torque. I have yet to encounter a lug it hasn't busted loose. I carry it with me on every road trip, vacation, towing the boat, etc.

I would highly recommend.

**EDIT** The model I have is the 899.

If you align the detent pin with the hole in the socket, you will have a hell of a time getting it off clean hands or not. I always seem to have to use a short pin or drill bit on my swivels, but maybe it's because I don't use them enough. You have to be careful if you don't use the detent pin with the hole. I've had a few sockets come flying off and they always seem to come straight for my face. Always..

Thanks for all of the positive comments and suggestions. For the record, I bought the 899B.

I bought the ring version then changed it to the pin detent and ground the pin...the pin is faster in my opinion because if you don't align with the pin it will pull off faster and more importantly it takes no effort so it really saves your shoulder...also I can align it with the pin if I want. If I'm pulling off a front suspension there may be 5 different sockets and having to pull off the socket every time is brutal on my arm vs just sliding it off with my fingers. Also those rings wear fast then they don't do anything.

I made 2 videos of this

ground pin

you can change the anvil to either version in about 10 min

You will be glad you picked up the 899. I just did a lot of front end work on a rusty old pickup and my 899H made everything so much easier.

I have the DCF889 and I really like it. I bought it around $100 new on Ebay and it's worked great for me. I haven't needed more than 400 ft lbs and it's a tad lighter than the 899.

Did you take the pin out of the anvil to grind it?

you can see in the video I took it out at the end, its so easy no reason not too. Just put your hand or rag over it because it goes flying out with a spring under it

One "other brand" that you may want to take a look at is Mac. A sibling brand o DeWalt in the big happy Stanley Black & Decker family, they use the 20vMax batteries. In Mac colors, the batteries have a shell more resistant to the average working garage environment.

Also available as a bare tool.

In my original post I said I already have the DeWalt 20V Max system and wasn't interested in anything else.

Not familiar with the Kobalt, but I have had the DeWalt for about a year now, and have never had an issue with the battery coming out. It's the same battery on all the other 20V tools, and I have used them professionally for over 2 years now, and never had an issue. Maybe yours had a defect.

I also have Dewalt 20v tools with two batteries. Never had problem with batteries slipping out of mine. Maybe bring your stuff in to HD and ask if you can test your batteries on their tools and vice versa.

Detent pins are awful, the only way I'd ever choose that over a hog ring is if it was production work with always the same size socket.

For the most part, I never find myself having issues getting sockets on and off with a hog ring easily. Usually just come in at a slight angle and tilt it straight as you push and then pull straight off.

3, 4, or 5 amp batteries are fine for this impact even the 1.5 would work, it's just gonna last less. I wouldn't go an buy a bunch of new batteries for this if you have 3 or 4 amp hour ones from other tools

I only have a 3ah and 1.5ah. Usually the 1.5 stays in my 1/4" impact driver and the 3 stays on the 1/2" dcf899. Neither one has actually run dead on me. I sometimes use the 1.5 with the 1/2" impact when I'm on my back or in awkward spots because it's lighter, more compact and easier to use.
