I thought I should post a follow up to the post asking how to remove the dynamic jaw in a Wilton C5. I finally just kept turning the screw forcibly until it came out. Turns out some hack had put it together with a single 1/4" rod all the way through the main nut. It must have been 10" long. when the jaw was closed it mangled the rod and damaged the threads. The rod was then cut flush at both ends. Luckily, the rod was softer than the threaded rod and I was able to clean up the threads and make everything work great. I would assume the same hack filed off the teeth from the locking ring and then having realized his error, added brazing to the top to get a friction surface. I'll figure out how to address that when the weather cools a bit. Average high now is in the high 90s. Here in east Texas the humidity remains very high and the temps don't drop much at night. As a new Texan it may take me a while to acclimate.

Vise pedestal

If you are short on good sense like me, here is a way to make a pedestal out of a fire hydrant.
The second flange up from the floor works as a swivel, and with all the mass,it is smooth, with enough friction for sawing, filing or planing
I mounted one swivel jaw, one fixed jaw and one smooth jaw permanently.
The others are slated for other benches.

Outlawmws FMC1959 Thanks guys, the reds official name is Sunrise Red but if you paint a fast enough car with that color I am sure it will get you arrested.

Royce If you are ever under motor attack you have a place to hide that thing is a beast.

Royce, I just had a thought, you need a nice slow gear reductions motor ad a ring gear, and a switch, and then it can be power rotated to position!

Royce: when you said you were going to turn your fire hydrants into vise stands i had no idea how you would do so. even though i watched your layout and the first drafts you really outdid any thoughts i had of a stand that AMAZING. WELL DONE SIR!!! is almost an understatement. i bet that thing weighs close to a ton now. you might as well post the other one with the American Scale #79 too that would be the showpiece in my shop.

Chilang: nicely done

TOP: can i make a suggestion so you don't end up breaking a foot off or something else when you haul your gems home? do they sell 4x6 foot horse mats in your area? they do up here in the PNW and for $40 you could have a nice rubber floor for your pick up. unless you use your pick up for hauling dirt or hay or what not you can always throw the rubber mat on the ground except for when you go shopping. just needed a little white on the vise to make it a really Independence Day vise. nice finds

va,
I thought about it, but it seems a little crowded.
I envision this stand being placed near a wall and rotating it to get the right vise facing out.
Thanks

Royce: the mind that thought of those Hydrant stands and the skills to do them on a weekend project is amazing to say the least. WELL DONE!!

ALL: in case any of you want to see the design Royce had that he changed for his AS #79 here it is. also here's the link to other projects he does in his shop up in the land of the midnight sun. (or no sun in the winter).

Royce is a collector of very nice toys I see.---I have shop envy.---And a discerning taste for his vises to.---I didn't see any junk amongst them.

When he says he's been working in the shop all night, he's been in there for 6 months.---A lot can get done in one night.

Hello
what brand this vice?
thank you

Gilll -

Welcome to Garage Journal! The vise is similar design to a York or Wilton. Can you measure the width of the jaws? How much does it weigh?

Also, where are you located and where did you find it? If you add details to your profile (especially your location) that will be helpful.

Certainly not one of those monster vises that you guys seem to find, but I picked up this small 3-1/2" PARKER at the flea market on Saturday for just $4.

Gilll,

Welcome to the group.
Can you post some clear close up pictures of the embellishments?

Edit: I think I see a MW on the dynamic jaw. What's on the stationary jaw?

I Will add to the board.
My 2 recent estate finds, Both parkers, my favorite.

this is a early #94 paid 40.00 at a sale

this is a 974 1/2 paid 80.00 at a sale

I leave them as I find them for now. Can get up the muster to strip and clean as they are only original once.

UN, that is a VERY cool find!

gilll, Not sure who made the vise but I really doubt Wilton despite and similarities. the "W with the "Penguin/bird" emblem is a hint I suspect.

Gilll: welcome to the forum and garage journal's vise thread. as far as value since most of us are located in different parts of the world you might want to post up your vise on this thread and see if the members in your area might have a better idea of the maker and the value then report back to us if you find out. OK? good luck and i have seen plenty of vises similar to yours but can't recall the bird on top of a MW yet.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28952

FL18: i'm not a huge fan of Parker vises just because i like Reed and Rock Island more, but i do like the lever for the handle on the first one you say is your favorite and i'd buy it if i had the cash and one showed up near me. welcome and thanks for sharing your opinion of ONLY ORIGINAL ONCE line.

OLDIE: you sound Healthy so we'll assume you were just resting. cheers big guy.

I don't think any of us can put a value on that vise for you without finding out who is the maker. I have never seen those marks. Can you search online eBay in
France to see if anybody has listed a similar vise perhaps with those markings?
eBay past sales are a good starting point to determine value.
Some parts of it certainly look like the Wilton machinist vises.
I hope this helps you.
