The is one of the easiest machines to set and use they ever made. He needs a couple pieces to practice.
Hi.. I was a Welder for 7 years and on my first day an old guy gave me a bit of advise I've passed on many times since.. so here goes..
if the earth clap is new file the jaw a little to uncover bare metal.. the shiny coating of chrome or Galv they give it to make it look nice will not conduct the electricity as well as bare metal and a good earth is crucial. Clamp the earth cable to a scrap piece of heavy plate then hold the hand set over it. and look away.. Pull the trigger and listen not look.. It should sound like a good piece of bacon sizzling in a pan.. if it's a clicking sound turn the wire feed down until it sizzles.. if it's making a sucking sound instead of sizzle turn the power down all the time keeping you trigger pulled. once you have the balance right you can then increase or decrease both settings depending on your work piece at the time. Also the shroud is insulated from the handset so don't be afraid to use it to steady the torch against the work piece while your learning just angle the torch and drag the shroud along. If your gas is too low you will get lots of splatter and if it's too high it will waste your gas.
And for Mig welding with gas you want the earth clamp on the - terminal, gassless (which I use a lot when working outdoors) switch it to the + terminal..
Oh... and then practice...once you get it you'll never loose it..
Hope it helps.![]()
