Hi everyone, long time stalker, fist time poster. After watching and reading for quite some time, I am finally ready to finish my garage. It will be a working garage for a mechanic complete with hoist (I will make a build thread as well)

My question is right now, I have a good 2-3 feet of concrete from the floor up before the drywall starts in my garage. I was considering just knocking down the casting marks and parging it with a thin set cement. However there are points where the the wall either protrudes or falls behind the surface of the concrete wall.

I found some information today where some people had used a bonding agent and a skim coat of plaster. Has anyone done this? And do you just use drywall plaster or a specific kind?

I have used stucco to skim over block with great success: 3 years in So Cal with no delamination. Just scrubbed with a brush and soap before coating. I used an acrylic bonding agent before coating (and mixed a little in the stucco): The stucco I linked below is really to be used for a sanded (rough) finish. I used a steel trowel instead of a foam or wood float and got it smooth enough! La Habra also makes a product called 'Santa Barbara Mission Finish' designed for a smooth finish, but they were not stocked by H Depot.

With that said, I have also used a Hot Mud product on top of block to get a plaster-like finish. With proper cleaning and the acrylic bonding agent it held up for 5 years that was in the house.

Hmmm, so I wonder if the same would ring through with drywall compound....

The guys above nailed the correct stucco installation which in my opinion is best for your project. ...

I would not use standard drywall compound though...

If you are heart set on using a dry wall compound type mix as it is easier to apply, I have had good luck with what is in the pic below. I have bedded concrete block walls out as much as a 1/2' with it to even up surfaces. Dries like concrete and you can let it dry and bed over it again. Get it smooth, as it is dries hard and every new coat applied will just be bumpier... as your trowel skims over the previous rough coat. . Good Luck. JMO

OK so when you say stucco I'm picturing ceilings, am I wrong? And can it be sanded out? I guess what I'm looking for is the best way to blend the drywalled wall to the concrete and paint it all as one... Maybe I'm off in cloud 9 here....

So here's a couple pictures of my garage and concrete wall. Any other ideas for finishing?
