Sat got one stop with anything, a plumber whose daughter was cleaning out the place:

Long reach screw starter, recepticle checker and extension cord, and this:

Vintage wood and metal shooting stick - $15 all.
Hit the big swap this AM getting the following:

File handles, MAC 7/16 combo, Armstrong 1/4 spinner/extension, Proto 1/4 ratchet, English turnscrew, Proto LA doe and weird mushroom head 9/32 driver. Blue driver is no name and I only got it 'cause the box, which also had mics Proto LA sockets ($12 for everything):

Also picked up a very old **** set and a chisel/plane sharpener.

$10 for the **** set, $5 for the sharpener.

I'd think the hasp itself wouldn't be hard to fabricate or install if it's a horseshoe-shaped bit of sheet steel. The existing one might come off with some opposed twisting with two pairs of pliers, and provide a pattern.
Unless it's not horseshoe-shaped, and more like a belt buckle, in which case you might have to drill out the rivets.
Unless it's spot-welded on.
But the leaf spring that puts tension on it might be trickier if it's missing.

Or am I not seeing this right? You mean the clasp on the left side of the Challenger box, right? Is it actually missing or just flipped down? Or is it a piece on the lid that's missing?

Honestly, the resolution of the photos doesn't show how the clasp is constructed. Maybe post a close-up of the good one and the busted one.

Hit one estate sale today. Not much there, but did find Tulsa County's ugliest Disston No. 7 panel saw (1896-1917, per the Disstonian Institute site). But it's straight and sharp, so if I can remove the hideous yellow paint, it'll make a fine toolbox-sized user. A small bag of sockets included seven early Craftsmans: 7/16, 5/8, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, and 1. The 1 is a BE, and the others are Circle-H. Four other USA sockets, a Stanley square tip driver, and a book (Oklahoma Gardener's Guide, not pictured) round out the day; $5.60 for all. Oh, and SWMBO spent three times that, but scored two nice pieces of wall art.

If there's any shellac left under the yellow paint, you might strip it all off with just solvent alcohol.

Got the Snap-On and Challenger by Proto (both Canada COO) and the Herbrand ratchet (first time I've seen one) for 5$ from him.

I'm curious about that Herbrand timbit. It has the same logo as a pear head I bought, which has no COO. The selector on yours resembles a New Britain. What type of retainer is holding it together?

That shooting stick looks like a cane seat. How tall is it?

Just saw your post. I'll see if I can remember to take pictures tommorow night. I need to get in the garage and clean a bit anyways, the stuff I bought is still on my bench, was too tired to do it tonight.

Made up an excuse to go out to the garage this morning so I could snap some pics. Here they are.

Grabbed this for 30$ at an estate sale at lunch hour. Got there and it was a couple in their 50's/60's. Figured they were selling their parents stuff. Nope, their son who died a few weeks back, ouch

Woden 186B/0 vise (Only noticed after I got home that it had been repaired, ****)
Snap On F711A 3/8 Flex ratchet that is rusted solid, will look for a rebuild kit
Brinks & Cotton and Craftsman 3" C-Clamps
Nicholls 12" Square
Johnson rafter square
Magnetic tray
4 Fuller wood chisels (No coo?)
12" Westcott ruler
Crafstman adjustable Dado blade

I went at lunch time and picked up everything but the vise, tray and dado blade for 10$. Almost felt bad after finding out the situation and that the guy had two daughters. I had seen the vise and asked the father about it, he said he'd let me have it for 5$ and to come back after work and he'd have it taken off the bench. Went back after work and he asked for 20$ since he said the dado blade was expensive, and I didn't even want to argue as I can't even begin to wonder about what they are going through.

I'm not happy with myself about the broken vise, I honestly don't believe the guy knew it was broken and it's my fault for not checking it over more before grabbing it. I'll probably give it to a friend of mine who only does very light work. In the end if I can find a rebuild kit for the ratchet I'll be a happy camper with the purchase.

You may not have to rebuild the ratchet. Give it a good soak in WD40 (or similar penetrating lube). If you are able to take it apart without soaking, soak the parts and inspect. If the guts can't be salvaged, you can call Snap-on tech support and should have no problem getting a free rebuild kit.

Nice find!

Sprayed some PB Blaster on it last night, didn't seem to be doing much. I'll check when I get back from work and if it hasn't done anything I'll soak it in wd-40 in a small bowl, I have plenty of wd-40 to spare.

Get some Kroil. Puts PB Blaster and WD-40 to shame.

Tim: nice haul. also vinegar works to unseize rusty parts. i stuck a vise in a bucket of vinegar and that vise had been sitting outside in the PNW rain for maybe 80 years. in a week the vise came apart, but you need to rinse, wipe off and dry all the vinegar off of cast iron and steel because it will eat it.

Diesel works too like that. yes Kroil is a lot better than PB or WD40.

Acetone and ATF may be worth a shot on that ratchet.

Picked these up on Monday at the flea market. 2 lufkin fabric tapes, one is marked bell system. Unmarked wood hand screwdriver, looks like an Irwin to me.

The bell tape is worn, but actually usable, the little one has seen better days.

I don't recommend Vinegar as a long term soak for more than a few minutes, as it WILL eat metal and especially plating..

I have used vinegar with good results on very rusty tools. I don't think I'll chance it this time as the rust is mainly inside, I'd be scared of hurting the rest.

I'll start with WD-40 as I have plenty of it on hand right now. Going to go look for a small container and soak the head of the ratchet for an hour or so right now.

I agree. It would do for shooting in some situations though

Its for old school English type shooting, though walking cane is as good a description. In other words when upland hunting, and you want to rest without messing up your pants.

It's 24 inches to the seat when unfolded

The place I've always seen them used is when the English go to watch he ponies run. I've never seem than used for shooting.

It should have a short spike and a "spreader" to keep it from going too far into the ground.

Craigslist find that I picked up last night.

Penncraft tool box. Never seen a Penncraft box before and thought it was kind of unique. Needs a little cleaning up but generally is in really good shape. Paid $75.

Picked up these giant Crosby shackles at the local flea market. The big ones are 25 ton, they were marked at $20 a piece, very fair. I asked the flea market to call the booth owner to make an offer on all of them, he said he had more at home. Ended up meeting up down the road and bought all he had. Ended up with 18 shackles total, all Crosby. 8 of the 25 ton shackles. Paid $150 for all of them. They are huge, dollar bill for reference.

It's for relaxing while waiting for the beaters to flush the birds for you and the other shooters.

I'll have to buy some Kroil, but for this time the WD-40 did the job and the F711A is back in action. Took a tiny bit of tough love in the vise (mostly cause I couldn't find anything handy with a bolt to take apart ) and after getting it unstuck and playing with it about 10-15 minutes it works fine now.

Insides are probably still ugly but that's a job for another day. I tried to take it apart, I managed to get the one screw off but not the other, I didn't want to force it too much and strip it.

On the tough screw, 2 things: Tap on the screwdriver a bit while twisting, and try tightening SLIGHTLY as well as loosening...

I was poking around on Google and apparently they are know both as Cane seats, and "shooters" seats :dunno: A "shooters Stick" is a combination walking stick and monopod gun rest ( I have one, and mine can also be used as a camera Monopod...). Why the reference to "shooting" for that I have no clue, as it would be a dang unsteady rest to sit on and shoot from. As a rest, its very low, but sitting on the ground, it MIGHT work (depends on the Terran and shooter...)

Fist I've ever seen them referred to as a Shooters anything.

Outlaw: did we ever see a full size picture of the cane seat? i own two of them and they are great to carry and watch a golf tournament because you can sit anywhere.

also i've used vinegar on chrome and mostly on old crescent and regular wrenches, but unless the chrome is already flaking it just seems to dull the finish. after i posted the vinegar fix for rusty parts i noticed it was a chrome handled ratchet. i probably wouldn't put a chrome ratchet into a vinegar bath unless i couldn't get Kroil or some other method to work.

i've aslo heard 1 part molasses and 9 parts water works sort of like evaporust that is a lot spendier, but not certain about that because i haven't tested it yet. any testers to confirm or deny?

JOE: nice finds and i can't say i've found a good anvil to buy in a while now. do you use a belt sander for the tops and spiff your anvils up as nice as your vises? or do you just flip them as is?

ALL: anybody else buy and sell anvils want to share how they spiff them up either on this thread or a PM please do. i know i'll find another one or two and i'll probably keep them this time because i'm currently ANVILESS in SEATTLE.

cheers
