Got these two done this weekend. The blacksmith style vise i got on eBay for $29.00. Not worth a lot but i really think its cool. I need to fix the clamp but otherwise i like this one a great deal.

My first Gyro vise. A 3.5". Painted it with caliper paint. A very pretty vise. The jaws are so very clean.

Any markings of the small hinged vise Joe ? I have had several and that one looks similar to an A. Winterhagen I had... Very Old!

Brorex, not sure of the brand, maybe Columbian, maybe Littlestown, but that big nut and main screw looks to have been a repair.---Looks like it was brazed in at the nut and the thread looks like a conventional NC thread.---So the housing/nut would have had to have been rethreaded to a larger screw with different threads than what it came with.---That's what it looks like to me, but I'm wrong 101% of the time, so just disregard.:D

Probably stronger now than new.---Make you a good little user.

Thanks for the input. It's been a good little vise. I've had it for years. All the damage seen is from me when I got my first welding machine and simply couldn't find enough metal to practice on. (Still no good at welding at all btw)

Not a single mark., and I had it down to bare metal. The seller said it was a "D. Lown" Vise. If you search these on Ebay you will see some identical to this one.

Finished up a Will Burt Versa Vise it has the name cast into the vise, most I have seen are decals. It also has a number 18 on each jaw, I left them on thinking maybe 1918 or maybe just number 18 of that batch of vises they made that day. Not sure I like the color its called hammered rosemary and was hoping for a little darker shade. I am not great at getting that hammered effect to come out sometimes.

CA Outstanding piece of iron there! A early one for sure. The matching numbers one each jaw may be part numbers to keep them matched up during production.

Here is an 8" Railroad vise I got home a few weeks ago. It is for the Chicago, St Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad. On the left side it reads Bench vise 7" jaw, 13 inch opening and the railroad letters under that. I have no idea why it says 7 when it measures 8 but maybe they did make a smaller one. This came from the Minneapolis Minnesota region. I had never saw another till this spring. I actually bought this last fall and a friend was supposed to deliver it to me at the LeSueur Minnesota swap meet this spring. I was there on setup day and spotted it on a trailer in the back row. It was late so I thought maybe we should wait till morning to load it up so someone didn't think we were stealing it. Next day my buddy goes over and loads it up. The guy helps him load it and wants $1000. My friend laughs and says ok whatever. Next thing I know I get a phone call and the guy wants his money or else so I head over to the trailer thinking all along my friend who brought it is pulling a joke. The guy was not happy and tells me he wants his money. I ask him did Glen put you up to this. Who the #@#@@ is Glen. So now I call Glen. Did you bring my vise and he says no there was no room in his car! I unload it and show the guy pics of my vise. What are the odds that two would show up just alike. I almost got an azz whooping but it would have been worth it. I called several people and nobody would cough up the money so I let it go and the guy sold it later that day for$ 1000. Maybe someone on here knows who bought it.
Last pic is a teaser
I have the same vice it from my father in law that worked at the rail road. It is marked C St P M & O. Chicago St Paul Minneapolis & Ohmah Rail Road. F1833 on the base and F 1834 on the movable jaw. The base also has BENCH VISE 13 opening 7 JAW. But the jaw measures 8 inches. I mounted it to my bench once but it was so heavy that it made the bench unstable so i removed it and bought a smaller one.

My first truly cosmetic vise restore project in process, a nice 1960's Reed 103, in Rustoleum Charcoal Grey. The top to the patio heater makes a good oven. I made the mistake of putting a moving blanket right in the focal center of the reflection - it melted!!

Here's an oddball. It's got some battle scars. Looks like two different Parkers merged into one. The screw collar has been brazed. It's my $7 beater vise. May part it out.

I got some pic's VA. I helped with my good friends Reed 406, the swivel jaw was way to tight and frozen. Luckily the pin came out with out to much trouble. Stoned the swivel portion like polishing a mold and the swivel jaw works like a champ. Making a handle and guys I got the dimensions for the swivel jaw pin. Added a few pictures of some of the stuff he has hanging around. Steve has collected vises in Estes Park for 25 years and his 100+ vises he has in his collection that would really impress you. Our town has a population of 3,000 locals and he has religiously hit every garage and Estate sale Fridays and Saturdays.

Well I was thinking of selling this 6in FPU and had a member on here talk some vise sence into me so I decided to clean this one up. I did not do a full restore, just simple green a little Kroil and the deburring wheel. This is the first time I have taken it apart and this is a very well made and super smooth operating vise. It is going to get installed tomorrow move over Wilton.

Pretty work KM.---The 406s are pretty robust vises, built solid.---And as I always note, those sweet tight tolerances on the swivel jaw Reeds.---Which can be a downside if it is already froze.---Makes it that much harder to unstick.---It's a downside we can live with though.---I got a good deal on a 406 about 3 years ago before they started getting unreasonable.---It was already overhauled.

Demo has the #407, now that is a hoss.---And no one has the #408 that we know of.

Funny that the #48 Hollands has surfaced but not the Reed 408.

My 406.

VA, I love your pictures. I seen Demo's 407 in Kansas. You are right, it's a beast.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Demoman/i-SQn3v97/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Demoman/i-SQn3v97/0/M/Demomans%20Vises%20%2820%29-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

But does not standout compared to his other 8" and 9" inch vises. Waiting for this 109 to repair the jaw towers and fabricate jaws.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Demoman/i-mjqzNxC/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Demoman/i-mjqzNxC/0/M/Demomans%20Vises%20%2825%29-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

Gonna be a fun project.

Keep them chained vise pic's coming, sure enjoy them.

Picked this Morgan Milwaukee 38 Coachmakers at an Estate sale for $75. Jaws look brand new. Not sure when they changed from 38to 138 for model number

Outlaw wouldn't let me call it...:dunno:

A Non-swivlin --- swivler...

But, that is...

What it is...

I want a Reed 306 to balance my workbench...:thumbup::lol:

I was dumb enough to tell a GJ friend about a very nice 306 in his backyard a while back...can't recall, but I think he paid $80 for it. It was only 2 hours away....I should have been mean and swopped in to snag it ...LOL.

Spotted what I think is a 306 (could be a 305, but waiting to hear back) on CL locally. They're asking around $350 for it, so I don't see it moving soon. It looks like they ground the swivel pin flush ages ago....not the end of the world, but a pain.

KM, Demo's 407 is in really good shape.---He found a real peach in that one.---His 109 is a little rough but that says to me that it paid it's dues and help shape America in it's little section of real-estate, and probably endured some abuse.---It deserves respect.

Be careful when you work on that one, even the pieces are heavy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yea Blue, the first #308 surfaced, and that is cause for hope that the 408 might just be out there.---But the 308 is a nonswiveling swiveler and I want that swiveling swiveling monster.

Sorry Old, but a nonswiveling swiveler is a nonswiveler.:bounce:

My NOS in the box Starrett 923 1/2 vise has found a new home with another GJ member.
To protect it I cut up a large moving box and built a custom one sized to allow me to put Styrofoam sheet on the bottom, sides and top of the original box.
I used these raggedy old tool rolls inside the original vise box as padding.
He should have it soon!

Here is my Adams Diamond vise finished. This is pretty close to the original color. There is a chip on the front left side of the anvil top but it doesnt affect performance.

The lateral line on the side is a casting mark. I almost ground it off but I didnt want to monkey around with it too much.

Awesome job Joe, I like how you are finding uses for the round magnet. Much better choice then mounting it in your surface grinder.

Finally have time to work on vises while my new CNC was cranking out vise parts. Back on my Parker 79 and will finish up repairing the crack in the slider like most Prentiss have. I'll post how it comes out. Burning out the years of grease in the crack.

New poster, long time follower. Found this nice old Columbian 603 1/2 at an Estate sale last weekend. Got to the sale late and didn't expect to find much. This was sitting in the corner of the garage on a shelf with a $20 tag. Couldn't believe it was still there. Maybe the rusty color scared people away. Very solid condition. Rusty but the screw is smooth. Handle isn't bent and the jaws look original. Question what color would this have been in when made? Also saw on other postings that a curved logo indicated WW2 +/- time frame. Thanks and hello from NY..

If you don't mind me asking, will you braze or weld that crack?
And if weld, what process and filler?
Thanks

Its funny how that happens. My last Wilton had been through 2 tag sales when I bought it for $50. As to original color, I am 99% it was satin black.

Hi Royce
First I will bury two long 3/8:16 Socket Head Cap Screws and pull the tail section back in place then plug the cap screw head later. The tail has spread .070 wider then the Static square opening. After drilling a hole at the end of the crack I will groove out the crack with a carbide burr. Pre heat then T.I.G. weld one pass, pre heat and do it again till it is finished. After welding I will peen the weld with a punch to stress relieve and pre heat again. I will cool the tail section as slow as I can but not bury it in sand like others do. I will use Eutectic Tig Tectic 224 I just love this stuff. It has bailed me out of cast welding many times and matches the casting better then pure Nickle. If the crack was cleaner then I might have considered brazing but I spent a good hour trying to cook out the years of oil and grease but there is still some in there plus I do not like the looks of brass. Why did Parker used two steel bars is a mystery, note how close the steel bars were to close to the surface.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Chas-Parker-Vises/i-rqZjfRb/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Chas-Parker-Vises/i-rqZjfRb/0/M/Parker%20%2379-Dynamic%20Jaw%20Support%20%281%29-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

I am always up for suggestions especially from another welder. I can only rely on my experience. You my friend are a true welder me I am a Toolmaker that welds.

That looks great. I have been on the hunt for a 204 R forever out here in AZ passed on one that was perfect and I am regretting it. Had a 203 R like yours for a while and a friend just had to have it so he has it now. Very well made vise.
