Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

JB,

Ahhh... I was under the impression that you were getting a BendPak similar to mine. I could help with that by providing pictures of an installed component or such but my ability to assist with a different brand - probably not so much.

...also I'm about to go off the grid next week so if I don't respond to a query during that time, I just didn't hear you. I will be on a backpack in Glacier National Park, MT.

Best regards,

Scott

Not a problem, I've read through the directions and they seem pretty straight forward all in all. I'm still at least a month and a half out from installing mine if not more.

As for the trip, how did you get so lucky to find someone to carry you in Glacier on their backpack?!:lol_hitti

That is a great area, and although I haven't been for ~20 years it was a beautiful area.
Enjoy,
JB

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Just finished reading through your thread. It took a couple of weeks off and on to make it through, but I must say it was worth it. Your detailed account of the shop build is much appreciated. The end product is looking great!

When you start looking for a new tractor, if want to go a little bigger (bigger is better, right?), may I suggest looking at sub compact tractors. They are larger than your current honda, they take implements, yet most still have an under deck mower attachment.

My father in law has a john deere 2305 with the under deck mower, grass catcher, front end loader, forks, rear blade, backhoe, and post hole digger attachments. It is diesel and 4wd, yet small enough he can use it for 95% of the mowing duties around his landscaped 3.5 acre lot. It is a very versatile machine. The current model equivalent is the 1025R. Info here:

https://m.deere.com/en_US/products/..._sub_compact/1025r_sub_compact.page?#viewTabs

Said tractor would have made a multitude of the tasks you have tackled in your build thread both safer and easier. Yes, they cost more than a lawn tractor, but they are much, much more versatile.

Good luck with the rest of your build! This looks like an excellent foundation to build a really cool and veratile shop.

KDXSR5,

Thanks for coming along for the ride and the very kind words!

I checked out the link to the John Deere; looks like a very nice machine. I will certainly keep something like that in mind when the time comes to replace the Honda.

Best regards,

Scott

JB,

Just out of college, I first saw Glacier in 1977 as I made my way from the Midwest to Seattle to start working for Boeing. I returned in 2002 with my family for a vacation. I've been going once or twice a summer ever since.

deja vu.jpg

My son and I just above Oldman Lake in 2011. (I'm the little guy. Ha!)
We took this same picture in 2003 when he and I did our first backpack in Glacier.

It is magnificent country!

Best regards,

Scott

SB: with all the hot weather we've been having the last couple years here in the PNW is there any snow left at the Glacier in Montana? I had a Land Conservation class in Missoula about 10 years ago and took my wife. we drove up to Glacier and couldn't drive up because too much snow, but sure was a pretty area. people were great in Montana too and i'd talk more with a stranger at a gas pump than some guys around here would speak in a year (of course i don't speak all the languages that everybody speaks in my neighborhood anymore). hope you had fun and enjoyed Montana as much as i did. any pictures to share please do.

also nice to see your lift is working correctly. just curious because we have been talking safety and you mentioned yours was not working correctly. is there any history of a lift failing and crushing anybody like an hydraulic jack will? just curious and not trying to scare you, but you did mention the sacrificial Toyota was expendable.

have a great day

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Drives,
I'll toss in my two cents of knowledge on lift failures. The cylinders on lifts can and do get to the point where they fail (fail in the way I'm using it is when the cylinder no longer operates as originally designed, I.E. slow leak.), but rarely do the cylinders fail catastrophically. I don't know about his lift or all of them, but mine as a restriction orifice that will restrict the flow of fluid back to the reservoir. Now what would happen if a line blows apart I can't say as I don't personally know where the restriction orifice is.

Now if all of that were to happen there are still safety latches in the columns to catch the arms if there is a sudden pressure drop. This is why in the operating manual it says to lift the vehicle, the drop it down to the next set of locks.

Most of the time when a car falls off of a lift it is from an unbalanced situation either poor placement of the vehicle and or arms in relation to the center of gravity, or pushing/pulling too much on one end without proper support.

The next most common failure is because of the way 2 post lifts mount to the slab. If the attachment points are not adequate, or the concrete isn't to specifications the lift can come out of the ground, or drop down into it. This is usually a very sudden and violent failure that would really make for a bad day. Which even though my slab meets the manufacturers specifications I'm cutting it up and adding a few tons of concrete and rebar.

DrivesItFar,

Arrived in Kalispell, MT today and drove to the park just to give my hiking partner (first time to Glacier) a feel for the place. Did see a few snow fields up high. If all goes well, we will be examining a couple of the diminishing glaciers a little closer in the coming week.

The lift seems to working well now after the installer made some tweaks to the machine. As to safety and vehicles falling off a lift... well, I see no reason something like that couldn't happen if one is not careful and if something can happen it almost certainly has happened.

I chose the fully depreciated Toyota because it probably has little to no real value in its current state. Ha!

Jim,

While the coal fires may well have contributed to the end result, in my opinion, the glaciers have been melting for a very long time. At some point, the ice age finally ends.

Ha!

I'll report what I find this coming week soon.

SB: best of luck on your hiking and sightseeing adventure. take lots of pictures if you are able to and post them when you get some time. funny it was in the high 80's and 90's last week and it's like it just became Fall this week with low 70's and rain so hoping your area isn't too cold or wet for your hike.

take care and again great to see you spend time to smell the roses so to speak.

JB: thanks for your 2 cents and 411 and hope your new concrete solves any issues or potential issues with your lift.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Not garage related but I hope to return to that early next week.

Just hiked out of the backcountry this morning and slaughtered a large pepperoni & mushroom pizza - along with some adult beverages - at Moose's Saloon in Kalispell, MT this evening.

I carried a SPOT device which sends a GPS position bread crumb trail to a web site. These points will stay active for a week and then disappear. The following link will take you to that site.

The Trip

First night in the backcountry we had a very sad situation. Some climbers near our campsite had an accident on Jackson Mountain. The survivor drug himself into our campsite at about 10:30 pm. The other climber perished.

Newspaper Report

I hope to move the air compressor into the Lone Beech Garage this coming week.

DrivesItFar & JB,

I think the thing to do to avoid thread creep is to post a link to another web page where I'll be documenting the recent backpack and posting pictures of same.

Glacier National Park SPOT Adventure Page

The above will be a work in progress for a while.

Next post will be a return to the Lone Beech Garage.

Best regards,

Scott

Wednesday - September 7, 2016

I was hoping to try to move the air compressor from my house garage to the Lone Beech Garage today. I decided to change that plan and just move my rolling tool cabinets from the house's basement garage.

My son and I took about an hour to get these cabinets moved...

20160907-01.jpg 20160907-02.jpg 20160907-03.jpg

20160907-04.jpg 20160907-05.jpg 20160907-06.jpg

...the approach we took was similar to the ancient Egyptian's techniques in Pyramid material handling. We used the sheets of 3/4 inch OSB that served as the safety covers of the Tornado Shelter during the build and used them to construct a temporary road to roll the tool cabinets across the back yard.

It is great to finally have most of my hand tools in the Lone Beech Garage!

If you had filmed that, a little piece at a time, and put it all together it would have looked hysterical (with no-one in frame). :lol_hitti :lol_hitti

Nice method.

I agree with whomever else it was that said - "I'll bet that feels good having them out there now".

Lyndon, I was thinking the same thing. If Scott had his camera on a tripod and took about 3 or 4 times as many shots, it would have made an excellent stop action sequence of the tool boxes moving across the yard. Scott, do you want to run that take again? :)

Lyndon & camarosrus69,

As I was putting the post together I was thinking the same thing as you guys.

However, we were doing this in the heat of the day and I was pretty impressed with the impact the full sun had on my old, pink body as the temperature was in the mid-90's.

Worse, my son was looking at me with just a hint of exasperation on his face when I paused to take the few shots of the process that I did. I think any additional delays due to added production values might have caused a "Sherpa Strike" and that would have been very bad.

Best regards,

Scott

DrivesItFar,

I've been schlepping tools to work on my vehicles from the basement to the house garage for so long, I'm not sure I'll be able to cope with having them close at hand when I being maintenance.

I shall endeavor to persevere.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Thursday - September 8, 2016

Today I found a little time to move the Harbor Freight Compressed Air Dryer from the house garage to the Lone Beech Garage. This was a task that I could do by myself and it also helped clear a path to the Air Compressor that I hope will be the next item to transition from the house to the detached garage.

20160908-01.jpg 20160908-02.jpg

Not as entertaining as yesterday's move as it was just a matter of getting the Air Dryer into a padded wheel barrow.

20160908-03.jpg 20160908-04.jpg

When I got the Air Dryer, I made a little stand to allow the condensate to drain straight down into an ice tray from an old refrigerator.

20160908-05.jpg 20160908-06.jpg

The move to the Lone Beech Garage went off without issue.

20160908-07.jpg

The next task will be getting the Air Compressor moved. I think I have a plan and I'll see if can get started on that tomorrow.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Friday - September 9. 2016

Yesterday I indicated that the air compressor would be the next item to be moved from the house to the Lone Beech Garage. Although I was by myself today, I thought I could get this accomplished.

20160909-01.jpg 20160909-02.jpg

First I had to get the anchor bolts out of the way. I had drilled completely through the concrete when I installed them so driving them out the bottom of the slab was not too big of a problem.

20160909-03.jpg 20160909-04.jpg

I have some 8 foot long pieces of aluminum channel. I used these two pieces to allow me to support the air compressor from the motor mount when I made the final transition from the 2x4 blocks to the pallet.
One might ask, "Why not just use a 2x4?"
The answer is: There's some bolts that would interfere with a solid piece of material.

20160909-05.jpg

I walked up the air compressor onto some 2x4 cut-offs until it was high enough to be moved to the pallet.

20160909-06.jpg 20160909-07.jpg

I used deck screws and an impact driver to attach a plywood scrap to a pallet.

20160909-11.jpg 20160909-12.jpg

I rocked the air compressor back towards the wall and, using the pallet jack, slid the pallet under the front leg of the air compressor. I used some scissor jacks, some 2x4's and the aluminum channel to support the air compressor. With this admittedly unstable arrangement in place (not shown) I moved the pallet completely under the remaining air compressor legs. The only reason I even attempted this was the fact that the air compressor was basically back in a corner and, as a result of that, was somewhat limited in how far it could move in those directions.

20160909-13.jpg 20160909-14.jpg 20160909-15.jpg

I used some scrap MDF and deck screws to secure the air compressor to the pallet.

20160909-16.jpg 20160909-17.jpg

I now started moving the air compressor towards its new home.

About halfway up the driveway one of the Pallet Jack's rollers started dragging.

20160909-21.jpg

I found some nylon string had REALLY gotten itself wrapped around one of the rollers.

20160909-22.jpg 20160909-23.jpg

I tried dragging the Pallet Jack a bit farther but it was not working. Note the scraped area on the driveway.

20160909-24.jpg 20160909-25.jpg

I worked on the bound up roller for about 30 minutes before I finally got it freed up and all the string removed from the axle.

Once the Pallet Jack was fully operational again, it was short work to get the Air Compressor in front of the Lone Beech Garage.

It was great getting this accomplished today. I still have to dismount the Air Compressor from the pallet but I'll try to get my son to help me with that over the coming weekend.

SB: great time to have a little piece of rope find it's way onto your pallet jack wheel wasn't it? i bet once that compressor is hooked up you will not only be relieved, but happy to check that one off the TO DO list and be able to use it. some of the guys put their's outside their shop to keep the noise inside the shop quieter, but since your weather is usually warm enough to keep the doors open maybe that won't bother you.

keep up the great work

How ironic, I had the same problem with the pallet jack at work this week...string! It took quite a lot of digging to get it out of there.

As always, the garage looks great & I enjoy the updates.

DrivesItFar & C_F,

The worse thing about the string was that I recognized its source immediately. I've been using that string to hang dirty paint brushes into the appropriate solvent to clean them after use. Somehow it wound up on the floor and I didn't see it as I rolled the Pallet Jack over it.

Some picks, needle nose pliers & a pocket knife eventually freed the roller but if I had been more careful I wouldn't have been delayed.

AZpilot,

Thanks: We're getting there! The biggest stuff remaining in the basement are a Unisaw, an 8-inch Jointer & a mill-drill. There's a few other items but those are the logistical standouts.

By getting the air compressor to the Lone Beech Garage I am getting close to being able to call the electrician to permanently hook up the 2-Post Lift, the Air Compressor and the Electric Chain Hoist. I will also have a couple of smaller tasks for him to do at the same time.

I was hoping to get the Air Compressor off the Pallet Jack and in position today but my son worked some overtime at his job.

I hope that tomorrow evening we can get the Air Compressor placed against the wall and also accomplish some work on the Electric Chain Hoist's Festoon Cable system. Once the Festoon Cable is in place, I should be able to schedule the electrician.

Best regards,

Scott

After several weeks of sporadic reading, I'm finally on the last page.

This has been a very entertaining thread, and you're an entertaining writer. Also, there's a little detail that comes through loud and clear in all these posts: you're a weather-oriented guy. Specifically, a precipitation guy.

I can relate, even while wishing we had even half as much precipitation out here in dry California:

After several weeks of sporadic reading, I'm finally on the last page.

This has been a very entertaining thread, and you're an entertaining writer. Also, there's a little detail that comes through loud and clear in all these posts: you're a weather-oriented guy. Specifically, a precipitation guy.

I can relate, even while wishing we had even half as much precipitation out here in dry California

Modern Jess,

Thanks so much for your endurance and the kind words!

I suppose my preoccupation with the weather is both the result of being a farm boy (weather can ruin you) and a pilot (weather can kill you). Ha!

Are those weather sensors in the picture? If so, are they on your house or another building on your property?

Best regards,

Scott

Sunday - September 11, 2016

After church today I managed to get the spouse and my son together in the Lone Beech Garage to help dismount the Air Compressor.

My wife took the first picture right after she had pulled the Pallet Jack away from the Air Compressor and just as we were sitting it down on the floor. A few minutes later we had walked it to what should be very close to where it will be bolted to the floor.

The next order of business involved the Yellow Beam and the Electric Chain Hoist.

Quite a while ago I had cut and painted a couple of pieces of 3/4 inch plywood to act as mounting plates for the brackets that will support the Festoon Cable for the Electric Chain Hoist.

The North Wall's plate had to "surround" the Yellow Beam in order to have studs to anchor it to. I had scribed positioning lines around the beam quite a while ago. My son held the plate in place while I set the first couple of deck screws. After those were in place I could do the remainder without assistance.

The South Wall had two studs on the side of the beam that the mounting plate could anchor to so a simple rectangle shape was adequate on this wall. Again my son assisted by holding the plate on the line until I could get a couple of screws into the wall.

With these mounting plates in position, I hope to get the brackets in place and the cable mounted this week. We'll see if I can make that happen.

My wife has a MAJOR birthday this week so celebrating that trumps all other activities!

Continued...

The remaining task on today's agenda was to remove the Electric Chain Hoist from the Yellow Beam and bring it down to the floor. I need to rearrange some of the wiring inside the Hoist's housing to switch it from 120 volt to 240 volt. This would be safer to do on a bench so my son & I brought it down via the scaffolding.

Once I get this rascal rewired and the Festoon Cable system in place, I'll be calling the electrician.

Excellent point!

Yep. It's a Davis Instruments sensor package, hardwired to a Xytronix data acquisition module, which is itself hardwired (over ethernet) to my home network. All the power for the whole thing happens over the single ethernet wire that runs up the pole, and the Xytronix module uploads data to Weather Underground (here's my station) every five minutes. I've also got it set up for NOAA ingestion, so I'm helping to refine the national forecast ever so slightly.

The sensors are on top of my detached workshop. It's not perfect -- temperature sensors are best placed in the open over a grassy area -- but it's the best I can do on my small lot. And the error factor is well within reason. The anemometer and the rain bucket are pretty well placed, however.

Modern Jess,

How very interesting!

I spent a bit of time in that area of the country in the late 70's (NASA Ames High Reynolds Number Wind Tunnel). It was well populated then and the Silicon Valley was just getting started. I would expect it is even more congested by a couple of orders of magnitude now.

Any grief from your neighbors regarding the weather apparatus?

Best regards,

Scott

As it happens, I am familiar with that wind tunnel. Well, okay, I am aware of it.

It was well populated then and the Silicon Valley was just getting started. I would expect it is even more congested by a couple of orders of magnitude now.

Oh my, yes. I've been here since 1991, and it was crowded then. It's much worse now.

Any grief from your neighbors regarding the weather apparatus?

Nope. Not yet, anyway. I've given the immediate neighbors a link to the Weather Underground forecast page for this station, which provides a hyper-local forecast for this specific spot. That seems to placate any ill will. Plus, it's not any more conspicuous than all the TV antennas that are still up (but slowly deteriorating) on all the neighborhood roofs.

Scott,

How are the mini splits performing on the main floor?
