BEAT: thanks for posting it all apart cause i'm sure I (we) will need that shot at some point. sorry to hear you found the inside of the swivel busted up. it seems to be a week point that hopefully Wilton solved as more and more of them were broken especially on the big ones.

thanks for posting up the date stamp and you are welcome to post it over on the Wilton date stamp thread too that has over 200 vises on it already. here's the link for you and others that have a Wilton Bullet made prior to 1965 so we can maybe keep solving the mystery about why they stamped them the way they did. thanks everybody that has already posted on there and those that will take the time to in the future. also a good excuse to clean and re grease your vise while you have i apart.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=269079

thanks. i will do that. i was looking for that thread, but didnt find it.
i know my earlier one is on that list somewhere.

Hello all,

Picked these fellows up last week. The York 100 is a 4" and the York 80 is a 3". Both are in great shape, dynamic jaws move well. The 100 has original paint, but the 80 has had a sloppy paint job. Both bars are straight and they're just fantastic. Make a great pairing with the York 150 (6") I bought last December (picture below). These Yorks are heavily built. Paid the seller his asking of CA$40 for both. Love these.

Yorks%20Left.jpg

Yorks%20Right.jpg

Nice vise the "little" York 80: 3". Received a paint job in the past, but other than that works well.
York%2080.jpg

Ditto the York 100: 4", works well, original paint. The jaws on both are perfect.
York%20100.jpg

And the behemoth from December last year (posted in this thread). I should really get all three lined up for comparison.
York-150-Left-Full-ATF.jpg

Thanks for looking,

Matthew A.
You shoud be ashamed for stealing those Yorks. YOU ****! nice find!

Everytime i think i do a good refurb on a vise, someone in here posts their pics and just kills my refurb job. That 974 Parker puts my 974 to shame and i thought i did a good job. Guess i didnt :(
Thanks. I've seen the vises you've restored and they came out awesome too.

Best looking jaws I have ever seen. That is awesome, nice work!!
Thanks WW. I restored 2 parker 974s last year and both had an identical finish. I have yet to fully restore another parker since. Maybe i'll restore my 956 next. :rocker:

Bagged: did you shine those jaws by hand just using different grits of sandpaper or emory cloth? I think you mentioned before, but i'm sure some of the new members would like to know as i would to refresh my memory. thanks
I did sand mostly by hand, starting at 60grit and stepping all the way up to 1200grit. Then i buffed and polished them on the bench grinder/buffer.

Wow...those jaws are awesome! I need to steal your technique for the 975 jaws I'm getting ready to start on :D
Feel free to PM me if you need any more info on how to polish your parker jaws

Looks very nice!

Thank you

Bart, I found a 106R at an estate sale for you!

Imagine my excitement when I saw this in the preview photos of an upcoming distant, but not too far, estate sale.

But then, there was this.

I'm told what's left of the jaws are about 4.5" but I'd guess it's 4" or less. The left side has also been whacked. It sorta looks like there is some weld built up on that dynamic cut side face, and maybe on the static side. Could be to retain the jaw faces, which might be compromised after this much hacking. Looks like the very deep center notch may have been for some sort of special work holding.

I suppose what's left of the jaws would still be usable as a vise, but it would piss me off quite a bit each time I looked at it. That vise is for someone more forgiving. I'm guessing it will be over-priced - or at least not worth the risk of the drive.

Man that hurts my eyes seeing a destroyed 6 inch Reed.

Beatcad, you might price that part out before you do anything else, I bought one of those lock plates for my C3 a few years ago, wasn't horribly expensive. I got it thru one of my machine shop supplies co., maybe Mcmaster Carr?

Don't know nothing about that Hollands only that's it cool. Needs a set of pipes jaws making and needs measuring and weighing for our benefit. I bet the cast on anvil and horn are why they are very rare.

Hi GarageJournal-ers,

I was referred here by the metalworking folks on Reddit. A friend of mine has two identical vises but we're having trouble identifying them/figuring out their value. We know they are both some kind of USA-made Columbian vise.

They have a jaw width of 3.5 inches and the number 203-1/2 on them. I read that Columbian made a Model 203-1/2, but that there are different versions because they were owned by multiple companies over the years. These seem to have different markings than the other 203-1/2 vises I found online. These only have 'Columbian' on one side and 'Made in USA' on the other. Most of the ones I found online have cities printed along with the model number in big letters like the 'Columbian' name. The number in the last photo is for the swivel base, which I guess is common across models.

We just want to narrow down their age, model, and possibly value. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there's a different section of your forum where this post would be more appropriate, please let me know. Thanks, folks.

I embedded one photo of the vise. You can see the rest in this album-- http://imgur.com/a/IZlCP. I figured that was better than flooding the page with images.

Those Columbian vises are relatively new. Like 1980s to present. Still a very nice quality vise I'd give the value around $150 give or take 25 bucks.

That one is newer than the Columbian 203-1/2 I'm restoring. Mine has T style jaw inserts which are pinned in place.

the good thing is the PO slathered the innards w/ anti seize. it turns & clamps great.
i'll make it usefull. not pretty, but a beater.

I had one made for a case of beer at a local machine shop. My 9300 didn't have a serrated lock down ring, which made it easier. You can't see it in the pictures, but the carriage bolts are held in milled square pockets. Pretty sure it won't break again. ;)

Nice, my C3 needed the serrations though. Funny thing is when I got it, for $40. at a swap meet, someone had made a lock plate for it. Very crude, picture a double D shaped steel plate, with a couple bolts welded to it, and the serrations gashed into it with an angle grinder or something. Pretty sure it's still hanging around here in a bucket of misc. steel, should grab a pic, quite the hack.

That one is typical of what I have seen online-- many lines of markings on the side. The ones we have here are so spartan by comparison. Your paint job is stellar. Does that make the pair Columbians made after Wilton took over?

Picked up this Sawyer Oswego vise for $20 off Craigslist. I cleaned it up a bit and gave it a paint job.

Meet the Coltons! Spent some time cleaning up the welds on the repaired Colton I showed a couple days ago. Didn't clean up too bad, thought about filling in the pits, but decided to just repaint it instead. Once it was done, I made the display rack for the vise shelf, and set them up for a group photo.

Hollands keystone vise. Has a threaded hole in the bottom and a piece of all thread and cast nut for securing that way. The nut is cool, looks like a fancy wing nut. Unfortunately it's broke, one of the wings snapped off. Came out good, but I'm not crazy about gloss paint... Wish I would have used flat. Oh well, I'm not keeping it anyways. The keystone had raised lettering in it that said PAT'D. It was very sloppily cast and didn't look very good no matter how I painted it... So I just ground it off. Perfect for any western Pennsylvania steelers / pirates / penguins fan.

Very nice vise, great price

I would post a vise pic, but I'm positive it wouldn't be anything new to this thread.

Any pics just adds to the vise ****, don't be shy, add your pics

That Prentiss looks nice and clean, and looks to have no crack on the slide, making it even more appealing. Looks to be a real nice buy if you get it.

Bags, as usual, your restorations are great, and those 974 jaws are stunning

Twertsy loaded a 1929 Erie Tool Works catalog up to his site http://toolarchives.com/node/3223

It contains this big beasty: the Mogul Extra Heavy Vise - 10" jaw - weighs 495 pounds :willy_nil

You could also get one of the little versions at 225, 308, or 390 pounds

Stopped at a random garage sale that didn't look that great, but there were a few items of interest. I asked about the vise and he said $15 on the no name vise and i paid him. Its a 6" jaw Rapid model 150 polish vise. These are such good vises as some of you know.

Whoa! An Erie Mogul 110, that thing is ginormous!! It would be tough to move even in two pieces. Absolutely incredible, hope some were actually made (although guessing it can't have been many, if so)

Just a heads up to the Ohio vise collectors there is a old athol in Cleveland area for $50 that I think is a pre 1900s quick release style vise. if any one picks it up I would really appreciate some nice pictures of it. https://cleveland.craigslist.org/tls/5807835664.html

My son-in-law just bought a Reed 105R at an estate sale for $28. Very little finish, and dirty, but great mechanical condition. Same sale was asking $800 for an older but clean Miller AC/DC Thunderbolt welder!
