Re: 24x36 in NC

Back from the dead . After a 5 month run of work things have slowed down enough that I am able to work on the garage again . A good friend of mine is an electrician , and we have got the garage 90% wired . Pics to come , though it isnt too exciting to look at wire.

Insulation is lined up and ready , then I get to hang the walls . Its funny how life gets in the way of the stuff we want to do .

Greg, my wife wants your house....LOL

But one little thing, when you put an apron around the lower portion or the walls inside of your garage, make sure you also put it on the inside of your garage door. I didnt' at first and found what some welding splatter will do to it. I suggest using either aluminum or galvanized because of the door, ie; lots of moisture will come through the door, open or closed. I myself used glavanized that i got from my local cheap salvage metal supply. I paid $8 a sheet for 20ga 4x10 sheets. Then once up, i put 2 coats of Rustoleum rattle can grey on it.

Other than that, this is gonna be an awesome garage when done.

My garage door is coated with vinyl on the inside , but I might be able to break a piece of sheet to run across the bottom . My wife isnt too willing to leave but all things have their price :)

Any new pics of the inside wires and insulation?

No pics of the wiring , its done pending an inspection . Theres a LOT of wire in it . I ran 5 home run 30 amp lines for the welder , and thats just the start of it . I will post some pics of it when I get home from Wisconsin .

I do have pictures of the final dirt work .

What you dont see is the 28'x60' pad in the woods . I am going to let it settle over the winter and start the pole barn in the spring .

And this is the latest toy to help stand up poles and bore the holes for the pole barn .

Have you thought about a set of steps off the front porch in front of the front door? Might break up that long porch railing.

Yep , there will either be a set of steps or a parkitecture style chimney centered on the front of the gable . Just waiting on two things ... money and some time at home .

Nice Place. I would have sealed in the 'car port' area and make another room specific for either, 'engine building', 'cold storage' or 'home office' To free up the rest of your living areas. But thats just me.

I like the idea of a breezeway/carport . We have a mild climate ,but it rains a good bit . So this way its just a short dash to the covered porch . At some point I will cut in a door from the breezeway to the house . The house is 2300sf and thats more than we need .

Now back to your idea of more enclosed area , the pole barn thats going in the woods will cover that . The wood shop will be in the pole barn and the machine shop will stay in the attached garage .

While the trucks were rolling I got 20 tons of # 57 rock for the driveway too .

Heres the concrete being poured and trowled . Once it was smooth we came back and brushed it . This made for a non slip surface , but not as rough as just brooming after you bullfloat .

This is all the concrete for now , we will be pouring more later , but 21 yards was all I could do for now . Next week I have the final inspection and then I start finishing it off inside .

Heres some rough ones of the wiring , not too many details as I was trying to get everything finished up in time for the insulation crew .

IMG_0190.jpg
All the insulation is up and done . It is R 13 on the walls and R 19 on the ceiling . It was supposed to be R 30 on the ceiling , but they sent the wrong stuff . After a short talk with the sales rep and a good price drop the guys got to work . It took them two hours to insulate the entire garage .

The insulation came in at $834 for the garage and the attic .That price includes all the vents , insulation and the labor .

Over half the garage has drywall up , and should be done tommorow . Then the mud will start . Thats all for now , hope to post some semi finished drywall pics tommorow .

Paint is done , and the cabinets are going up . I got the cabinets from Lowes on clearance after I read about it here on Garage Journal . I have the lights up , but no pics yet . And the countertop is mostly done too . More pics this week as the holiday allows .

Yes its quite yellow , but the bronze on the lower half will tone it down . We run this paint scheme in the stores I open and it has grown on me enough to put it in my garage . At some point I will put corrugated on the bottom , not sure if that will get the bronze treatment or not .

The total for drywall , paint , insulation and labor was $2350 . I add the cost in to hopefully help someone else compare pricing .

I built the workbench from porch leftovers . It was nice to finish it and not have to spend more money . All of the posts have a section of laminated beam under the countertop to mount the vises too . I have to go pick up the steel tops next week , but til then its nice to have somewhere to work on .

100_5383.jpg

My $50 Atlas has a home ! Once the shop is done I will get it all cleaned up and running .

With the Holiday I am done til Monday as most of my family is coming into town . I hope all of you have a Happy Thanksgiving . I know we have been blessed and I am extremely thankful for everything .

Went and got the countertops today from the machine shop . They are 1/8" mild steel broken 1'' in the front and 3/4" in the rear with a depth of 22 1/4" . They are heavy ,but not terrible to handle . I will get them installed in the next few days once I get all the running around caught up .

Countertop is welded up and installed . I stitched it and then flapper wheeled it smooth .
100_5417.jpg

Here it is all painted and ready for the vises to be installed . After the vises go up , the lathe will go to its permanent home .

The compressor is at the UPS freight terminal and I hope to get it tomorrow if the weather cooperates .

The overspray will disappear once the dry erase backboard goes up .

Great job!!

my only suggestion. That shot of the morning light hitting the left (facing garage) side, should you have thought about getting some of that light inside.

I know when I build, I want to be able to see ( put a bead/scope on an intruder) any access points, 24 hours a day.

There are some great high, narrow windows that would have worked great.

Great build.

Re: 24x36 in NC

Been a long while since I have updated and a lot has changed. I ended up not building a pole barn due to having to clear a lot of trees . What I did decide on was to add on to the back of the current garage. We moved a lot of dirt and poured some 3' deep footers to get down to good dirt . This allowed me to add a 24' deep by 22' wide addition on the back that will eventually be the wood shop .

index.php

Dirt work and footers.
index.php

5'6" daughter in the trench.
index.php

J bolts that go all the way to the footer and the finished concrete. It is 4000 psi with double fiberglass and it was $129 per yard.
index.php

New pad beside the garage.
index.php

We went a little concrete crazy and went all the way to the road.
index.php

index.php

Lots of watering.

The concrete was poured on top of road cloth and 6 inches of well compacted gravel. This led to a drop off on the edge and it meant I had to call in my jeep buddy to regrade the yard.
index.php

What started as a simple light regrade ended up being "lets fix everything"!
index.php

Earth berm for privacy / security. We ran power and water out to the berm. This will help keep the plants green and run a mighty mule opener for the forthcoming gate.

We stayed off of the White Oak roots as they dont like to be disturbed . I learned this the hard way from the dsl cable install guys.

Got the wiring inspected today and it passed with flying colors. Then I hung two LED shop lights and one exterior light. I am waiting on two more shop lights to come in at the local True Value and that should be plenty of light.

Moving the Jeep trailer to the new addition allowed me to do a ton of clean up in the main garage and I cant wait to get the back garage ready for everything else that needs to be in there.

Started insulating the back garage and sheathing the interior with OSB. I am going to paint the OSB with fire resistant paint for safety and to make it a little brighter. I am going to be hanging all of the Jeep doors , Kayaks and all kinds of other stuff on the walls and there arent that many studs to use!

I inherited a second garage three years ago on the Outer Banks of NC and I am just now starting to clean it up. First up was to get Dads toolbox drawers working again. I cleaned out all the dirt daubers and sprayed the drawer slides and like magic they all work again. There is a bunch of SK , Snap On and old Craftsman to be cleaned up and sorted but for now the drawers are useable.

index.php

index.php

index.php

I didnt take any pictures of the good drawers? I think I was to focused on cleaning and my kids fishing out back.

index.php

index.php

There is so much of this stuff around the garage , and tons of old manuals as well. Heck there is even an old 50's TV that still works.

And no trip back home would be complete without a trip up to the state line.

index.php

index.php

Back to insulating the back garage today , then sheathing it. Once that is wrapped up I can paint it and build the shelving units to hold all the Jeep parts that are filling the front garage.

Cool that you are cleaning up your dads stuff. Long drive from Riedsville to OB.
It has taken a while to get around to it , honestly I am not ready to do some of it even now but it is time. The shop has been just like he left it and locked the door since he passed away. I have found a lot of decoy parts and I plan on carrying on that tradition in the future.

The drive takes four and a half to five hours depending on traffic and it is hard to get out there as often as we would like. Right now we are trying to decide what to do with the house and commercial property we own , til then I will keep cleaning and fishing when we make it out there.

We got a little more work done in the back garage yesterday.

The brackets are attached to a triple stud with a through bolt and will help secure a laminated beam that will locate a diagonal brace to the floor. This will give me a strong shelf but no legs out front to deal with. I am putting a hardtop and soft tops on the shelf so it wont be carrying a lot of weight , but I still want it to be strong.
