The family and I are leaving the rat race of the city and moving south to Reidsville NC . Before we can move I need a garage to put all the machinery and tools in . Heres what we started with . We dropped three trees and made a nice flat pad for the garage . The pics below show where we started and how it looked as of Oct 20th .

While this was going on the Asplundh guys were out front cleaning up the electrical right of way . I asked them if they wanted a little sidework and we came to an agreement for clearing the front yard and mulching two trees . Yes I said trees . There were two 8" diameter pine trees under the weeds and their tractor chopped them up in to tiny pieces .

100_0073.jpg

And after . I will seed it this spring , I think it will look nice all grassy and it will be a great place for the kids to play .

So now that its all cleared I found a concrete guy I trusted and they dug the footers by hand :wtf: After an inspection from the county we were cleared to pour concrete . I got the pad site sprayed for termites and then put down a 6 mil vapor barrier . I also sealed the seams on the barrier , not sure that it was needed but it was a now or never .

We finished up around 7pm with the 1st truck scheduled for 10 am the following day . After a little Bojangles for breakfast we cleaned out the footers and right as we finished the truck showed up .

Here you see where my concrete guy started screeing the crete and the last pic is where we were left after the 1st ten yards.
100_0053.jpg

100_0056.jpg

The second truck filled up the form and there was some extra left for the low spot in the driveway .
100_0062.jpg

A little bullfloating and then it was time for the machine .
100_0064.jpg

100_0066.jpg

Joe ran the power float all afternoon . He swapped the blades halfway through and I ended up with a super slick level slab. I do a good bit of fabrication so I wanted as level as it could be . There are a few low spots but overall it should be good for pulling #s off of .
100_0070.jpg

And this is where it sat until right before Thanksgiving .

This is what I started with as a reference .

I got the block run on Nov 25th and 26th .
100_0184.jpg

100_0185.jpg

12 bags of type N 48 bags of sand and 180 blocks . It took two trips in the dually to get all of it to the house . A pallet of block 24 bags of sand and 4 bags of Type N made my dually sit level .

100_0188.jpg

Eddie the mason and Stacy are filling all the block . I have subbed out almost everything , with the economy it hasnt been that bad as the contractors are hungry and want to work .

100_0195.jpg

This shows the block work completed and ready for framing .

100_0204.jpg

This was my view as I left with the horse trailer in tow . I hated to leave but Thanksgiving was calling .

Re: 24x36 in NC

After Thanksgiving passed by ( along with the crud my daughter brought home from school) I got back to getting the garage together .
Here are the walls going up . We started this part on the 5th of December .

Up until this point the project had moved smoothly . Note I said had . The supplier I am using dropped the ball and didnt get my truss order in on time so I had to wait until the 12th to get the roof on the garage .

This is where Dec 13th found us progress wise .

IMG_0022.jpg

IMG_0023-1.jpg

IMG_0024.jpg

IMG_0025.jpg

The trusses are up and sheated . The roofing paper is buttoned down , and I will shingle it starting the 26th of December .

IMG_0028-1.jpg

This is the scissor truss and I have right at 16' of height .
IMG_0031.jpg

IMG_0032-1.jpg

Here are the attic trusses , which extend out over the porch . This gives my wife some storage in the center and the outside sections will hold my tubing and lumber .
IMG_0036.jpg

Over the garage door opening is one of the many microlams I have had to put in . This one is carrying no load , but it still has to be there to keep the building inspector happy .
IMG_0035.jpg

IMG_0034.jpg

I didnt want the OSB to make contact with the block so this is what I came up with .

Re: 24x36 in NC

I just got back from Reidsville last night the 22nd and here is where the project currently stands .

100_0373.jpg

100_0372.jpg

Its getting close ;D
100_0368.jpg

The breezeway/carport from the rear .
100_0364.jpg

Heres one more of the many microlams .
100_0378.jpg

From the side .

My neighbor gave me some nice black locust longs to go where the temp poles are currently located . The roofing is going up on Friday when a friend and I will attempt to not cripple ourselves hunched over on the roof . He was a roofer for years and I have run a few shingles myself , the only hard part is admitting we are getting old .The siding is supposed to start on the 29th. Sometime between now and the 5th the garage door will go in and then it will be dry .

Another friend and I will wire it up after the 1st and all thats left is to sheath or drywall the interior . On top of that I have some serious grade work to do out front so the water will go away from the garage .

Hope yall enjoy the buildup and Merry Christmas .

Nice work. From what I can tell, it looks to be 24' x 26' or 28' long. I also like the breezeway connecting the house with the garage. Are you going to wall that in and claim it as garage space or has the wife beat you to it and has different plans?:lol_hitti

I'm curious on plans for the breezeway too, I really like the setup with it, but I'm curious as to why you didn't close it in from the outset? Or were you going to use it as a drive-through to the back?

Wow, small world... Hey DLC, I grew up in Boone, just up the mountain from you like that 300 Z of yours too...

Used to have a couple of friends who lived in Reidsville after college...

Good looking garage...

Think this statement stated his plans..lol I know there are so many nice pics to get distracted.

The garage is 24' x 36' while my wifes breezeway/carport is 16'wide and 28' deep . No plans to close it in , but there is an attic up top that she has also claimed .

It will be a place to park my wifes van and for the kids to play if its raining. The deck will eventually go in front of it so it might also see some duty as a patio .
No entrance in end of house for breezeway? :headscrat
Not yet , the house was already there and the door is on the back . We may move a door there later . Right now the emphasis is on the structure getting completed so we can move .

looking very nice!
Thanks , its been a lot of fun so far minus the paying for it part .

Thanks for the kind words and yes it will stay a breezeway/ carport . I have a 30x50 butler building that will go a ways back behind the garage later on so the breezeway will keep its role .

Wow, looks great! This is exactly what I have planned for the spring, a 24x36 stick built on 2 course of block, except I would like to use (2) 9' doors. I love to attic and the carport/breezeway. If you don't mind I would like to ask you a few questions. How many yards of concrete did you end up using? How thick is the floor? I had not thought of the scissor trusses, are you happy with them (as in ceiling height)? also what is the pitch on your roof? Sorry so many questions but I really like what you are doing.

Why use block instead of a plate on the cement? I can see why Kevin thought it was less than 36' - mine is 24x36 and seems much longer - maybe just the photo's. Did you consider putting a door on either end?
Nice build!!

Two Nine foot doors will save you a little money as you wont have to use microlams , at least thats the code where I am . I like one giant door cant give you a reason why though :)

I used 20 yards of 4000psi concrete and it is 5" thick . I do like the scissor trusses as I have enough height to put a lift in if I wanted too . Mostly the ceiling height will let me rotate tube as I bend it and not hit the ceiling .

The garage is a 7/12 pitch , same as the house and the inside pitch of the scissors is 4/12 which is as high as I could get it .

I like block as it keeps the sill plate up and dry . With the height I wanted a 8' stud wall and two courses was almost perfect for me . The backyard drops off a lot behind the garage so a door back there wouldnt have done me much good , but I did think about one out the side . In the end I built the same thing I work out of now as it works well for me .

The roof starts tommorow morning ...pics to follow .

Looks nice. are you going to drywall any of the interior?

I saw another garage journal member use osb and I liked it for the durability it offers . Whether its drywall or osb I plan on using corrugated steel on the bottom 3 feet as I weld a lot .

Might want to think about going a little higher - I went 4'...there's some waste in corrugated that way, but its above the cart my welder sits on.

The stuff at the building supply is 12' long , but if I went with 4' lengths like you suggest there would be less seams in the drywall

The garage door is in and operated very nicely . Its insulated too which should help with heating and cooling the garage .

100_0442.jpg

100_0443.jpg

100_0444.jpg

The shingles are on and are a near perfect match . It took a bit of hunting to find the right ones , but I am happy with how it turned out .
100_0445.jpg

I pulled the front porch off and we are putting a covered porch across the entire front of the house . The porch will have a gable that matches the garage . It should tie everything together pretty nicely .
100_0447.jpg

Nothing is more fun than a bobcat , my neighbor and I moved a LOT of dirt over three days .
100_0451.jpg

100_0452.jpg

100_0458.jpg

We filled a big hole down at the bottom that you can see , it doesnt look like a lot but the dirt is four feet deep in the middle .
100_0466.jpg

This is what 16 tons of gravel will do for you . It will make a nice base for concrete later once it packs down .
100_0434.jpg

A friend of mine from the Suzuki bulletin board came down and moved the heating and cooling unit from under the breezeway .

Looks sweet, I like the two courses of block, I sorta wish I had done that on the addition, but I was trying to make it mtch the original structure.
The sheet steel on the walls for fab work is one idea I am going to copy in my fab area, it'll fit right in with the look I want, too!

I didnt see any rebar or wire mesh in the slab? Even with a fiber mesh mix concrete, it still has the potential to crack.

It is 4000 psi with double fiberglass so that should delay the inevitable . My experience is all concrete will crack at some point , so I am cutting in two grooves so that when it cracks it will hopefully be a straight line . :)

Nice build. I have the room to build a 24x36 but I will have to put the garage door on the long side. My goal is to install a lift in it that requires 14' of ceiling. So I'm wondering how far out do your rafters go before they are 14' above the slab? I've also got to convince my wife that my daughter doesn't need the entire back yard as a play ground :).

The bottom of the trusses are a 5/12 pitch and the wall is right at 9'6" tall . So the height doesnt reach 14" until about 9'6" off the wall . I set it up so I could have a lift in the future to lift a samurai . At this point I think I will forgo an inside lift just because I like the open floor space for fabrication .

very nice.. always good to see other NC folks
Thanks , I am glad to be back home . I think I have seen you over on NC 4x4 ?

Very nice. Can't wait to see the porch build.
Here ya go .

Yes , it went on today . The funny thing is I have heard this style called , a birdbox ,eyebrow , rake ,pigeon stand and a few more things I dont remember. Whatever its name is I drew it up as I liked it and its now done . More pics next week when I get back from Arkansas .

Re: 24x36 in NC

very nice! what brand/size is the garage doo?

The door is 16' x 8' and is a Wayne Dalton 9100 series with Sonoma panels . The total for the door was $1050 with tax installed . It is insulated with a vinyl skin on the back .

And thanks to everyone for the kind words , its been a lot of work and planning but in the end its worth it . The good part for me will start in six weeks when I get to start finishing off the garage interior .

The "pickets" are 5/4 decking boards . I have done it to the last two houses I have had and its different without being expensive .
