Another interesting base if you have two of them, is to get a foot or 18 inches of the post as 1-1/2" bar stock; clamp that in a bench vise, and slide the Versa Vises on from the side and you have two parallel vises.

Qutlaw, that is brilliant.---First time I've heard anyone mention that.---I've got a Versa and a All-Angle vise by Fray Mershon, Los Angeles, Calif., that uses the same set-up.---That idea would work no matter how long of a piece of pipe or bar stock you use.---Good to keep in mind.

You'd have to really want one to pay that much, shame really.

Indeed, shame it hasn't still got the piece that broke off with it, at least then you could consider a proper repair. As it stands it's little more than a parts vice, although I guess it's unusual to find a good dynamic jaw on a broken vice!

I bet that price would be cheap compared to USA prices even for a broken one.

So did you buy that pair on Eprey?

Yes Sir... (I know, $$$:dunno:...)

Now I have:
1 - 6"
2 - 5"
1 - 4"

I just bought a new SO box not long ago and was planning to paint a 50's C-2 and OEM Wilton vise stand to match it and put it in the garage, so the 5" was actually a blessing in disguise, so to speak.

I appreciate the knowledge you and VA passed on, thanks!

Take care!

How stable is that brake drum base? I'm getting ready to make one very similar to it for a Columbian 6" vise, but not sure if the base will be heavy enough without me adding a lot of extra weight...

It's good. I haven't really worked anything on it yet though. I thought the same thing when I built it and my backup is to get a bag or 2 of concrete-mix it up and fill the drum. That'd add plenty of weight and would be easy to do.

I posted these over in the Garage Sale thread but thought I would share this beast of a MAC vise. It has 6" jaws and it is hard to see the size in the pics.
That's a 3.5" Cman to the left for comparison.

Brian

Very eclectic collection you have there, a Mac, a RAE, a Majestic, a Babco, and then behind the Mac, can't recall what it is exactly (Montgomery Ward?); not every day you see a mix like that. Nice!

my Wilton 75th Anniversary arrived this afternoon, time to replace this smaller vise...

Bonus Wilton sledge -

i-mBzvb66-L.jpg

Of course and older Wilton pops up on Craigslist for $250 today!

Those Tradesman anniversary vise are great deals, $75-$100 less than normal plus the free Bash. You deserve a couple

That's a nice one Zoom.---Don't see many of those and when you do, something is usually broke or altered.---That one looks real pristine.---Very nice.

Your living room looks like Matchlessantique's Shop.---Should be a little off-kilter by now.:D

Thanks VA! I paid up for it, as it seems to go with the more "odd" stuff as you know, but it looked (and is...) in good shape, so I pulled the trigger.

I go down to Steve's (Matchlessantiques) place every month or two and DROOL:drool::drool::drool:, he's about 40 minutes from me, his collection is unbelievable! Great guy too!

Might just be me, but how are you not worried about that big steel ball growing a mind of its own and rolling through that window?? [emoji52] [emoji53]

You **** for finding one!

Now the real question. Is all that cast iron sitting in the middle of your living room? Or does your garage have hardwood floors?

Living room. bedrooms. kitchen. probably the barhrooms; its a "House of Steel" that will one day implode the wood and concrete containing it!

Seriously Zoomie, aren't most floors rated something like two or four hundred pounds per square foot?

It is precariously perched in the hardy hole of that anvil...:lol_hitti

It is actually a mudroom between the garage and the house. I've got 4 sets of lathe/machinery legs and three 15' sections on maple bowling lane that I am making tables out of and setting up a display in there, it has concrete floors, thank goodness!:willy_nil

Update:

After a couple days of soaking the jaw pin in kroil it turned loose. The jaw spun off and also appears to be in good shape. I picked up 3.5 gallons of evaporated, so I'll start the soaking process.

Yea Zoom, I found one about 4 years ago and it wasn't cheap even then, but then they seldom pop up.---You get what you pay for.

Was that one on EBay?

Outlaw, he had the house built to his specs, the foreman looked at him kind of funny when he requested each room be able to hold the weight of 40 anvils. :headscrat

Thanks !!

FMC, the back ground is the vise collection (Majestic and others), the foreground are the sellers, hopefully ! Although the RAE might get cleaned up and added to the collection. The collection needs a little straightening out and it wont happen until after my vacation. I am counting the days...

Zoomie: of course i've been watching and enjoying all the pictures of your anvils, vises and new vise jaws, but you haven't even posted the SEA of TETNUS for a while so any chance we can get a picture? WELL DONE SIR!! and of course i'm in to help you move with or without compensation, but why would you.

Monte: nice to see you posting over here and i had no idea those old York vices came in blue or is that only for you boys in Germany? sweet looking old vise.

BENT:
nice progress and keep us posted and of course ask questions if you have any either here or on the 101 thread. good luck

ALL: Loydski just made a young member very happy so he deserves a VERY WELL DONE!! check out the vise thread in Vintage tool section where Teenager with old tools was hoping to find a decent vise and see what his choices were before Loydski PM'd him.

Zoomie, that is a nice Parker, trade ya 4 pairs of jaws, two 3/4 handles and a handful of swivel clamps for it. Ebay is a great place to find jems. Very nice collection. I used to build my Stock Car motors in my back bedroom before having a kid. Those hardwood floors are pretty tuff.

Monte, is that a newer York? The paint color is not deep red. Very nice shape.

Cleared my shop of jaw builds and ready for some serious vise repairing. Got a couple from Kansas and I have plenty waiting of my own. I:ll share pic's when the time is right.

Here is my method of adding Bronze balls to a handle. I am not a fan of a threaded attachment. I machined a 7/16 diameter on the handle and fit a ball nice and tight, just guessed at how much steel to leave for peening and knowing I needed room for capping the end with Bronze weld. After peening the ball on I filled the rest with Silicon Bronze with my TIG welder.

This was a recent restoration. It involved help and advice from several GJ members. Thanks to everyone for their tips and encouragement. Here are a few before pix. Notice that in the close-up the date is May 26, 190. I had to freehand the 3 when I did the lettering. A special thanks to Jcrapola for the fabricating some parts as well as altering my wheel puller so I could get the jaw assembly apart.

I apologize for the previous incomplete post. My %#*&@ computer is acting up again.
