I decided to leave a lot of the marks that it had accumulated over the years. It had provided years of service and survived years of neglect and it didn't seem right to make it look too scrubbed and polished. Besides, it would have been a lot more work. It's ready for another 90+ years of service. Here's a picture of where I picked it up. It's the remains of the Packard plant in Detroit.(WARNING: Don't go into that alley alone unless you know the guard dog - Chainsaw.)

Nice job on that 4a CRSINMICH. They can be very challenging vise's to restore. Not sure if you took detail pics of that Emmert apart but they do have a lot of parts that need to fit right in order to fit and work well. Here are a couple of pics of my 4a disassembled. Getting the rear cross bolt out on mine was a real chore as I didn't want to damage it and the set screw holding it had grown in. I think there were a couple of ways Emmet secured that cross bolt but I added a pic showing one method they used. Also pulling the spindle extension off the stub on the dynamic jaw was a chore. the jaw rotation stops can also be challenging. Ed.

Get: Thanks! I wanted to paint it Packard Maroon which was a color that was last used in production on 1937 Packards. I have the formula but couldn't find anyone who could blend it. Of course, there are several Packard Owners groups. They love them.

rmalkow: Thank you too. It was a labor of love but by the end it seemed to be more labor than love. Where have you been? I haven't seen a post from you for some time.

ORC: You are right - there are many parts and not only do they have to go in the correct place but also in the correct order. It took a lot of trials and a lot more errors to get it all re-done. My cross bolt had a pin. It came off easily which is good because I had to remove it many times. The detent was a surprise to me. The rear jaw slide was so caked with grease and chips that I couldn't see that there were divots in it. Joe Striper gave me the idea of enlarging the hole in the jaw tilt housing?? and then tapping it. I put a ball bearing and spring in before putting the cap screw in. Works great. Thanks Joe. The broken screw and frozen jaw assembly were a challenge. I did take a few detail pix but not as many as I should have. Thanks for sharing yours. Here are a few of mine:

Before and after...she could use a new handle, jaws and acorn nuts, but that would just be to make her prettier at the dance :)

Gman: Damn! Now I wish I had grabbed that Wilton when I had the chance. Good job.

Joe: Thanks for the compliment and your help. I like that Athol. It should clean up nicely too.

Here's a little vise I picked up about a week ago. No makers mark that I can see, all that's on it is 5306 stamped. Removable jaws, and a cool little lever for swiveling. Does any one know the age or mfgr?

This is a Prentiss 912 that a neighbor gave me recently, it belonged to his grandfather. I think it dates to around 1910 or so.

Nice Prentiss! Prentiss is one of my favorites and your right that is a oldie for sure. It's got 3 1/2 jaws? Probably wrong but just guessing.

It has a swivel base with a pin that drops into a series of holes. I think it has around 3-1/2 inch jaws. They don't seem to be replaceable. Anyone have insight on jaw replacement?

Correction: jaws are 4-1/2 inches and vise weighs 76 lbs.

Gany: if you need a Birtman label for that vise in the Avatar i don't blame you cause that is a keeper. what color is that and maybe you've probably posted it before, but i couldn't find it so if you can post up pictures or let me (us) know the post i'd appreciate it. also what color is that cause not quite burgandy or red? WELL DONE!

Zoomie: i do like your bright orange Snappy, but if you want to change back to your Parker with the Anvil background that would be the one i'd vote for. i was going to post up a picture of my entry where i had 3000 pounds of olympic weight plates stacked up, but it's not in my new computer. that said if i could ever get a pile of cast iron like yours and my wife leaves me it has plenty of room inside here.

cheers

...

Thank you.
The vise had some original paint hidden in nooks n crannies so I tried to mix it close but it didn't come out right. I decided it looks okay though so I left it.
I used rust oleum regal red mixed with a little krylon leaf green (In the tiny bottles). Both were brush on .

Lately this forum will only let me post tiny pics but tomorrow I'll try with my computer

Wilton and Craftsman Vise Estate Sale Find

I picked up these two vises at an estate sale. For $22 each I had to get them. The wilton on the right I gave to my father in law. The craftsman I am keeping. Knowing that people love their vises, do most people just use them or I've seen people take them apart and repaint them.

Just picked up a new old stock Jet 6-inch "extra heavy duty" - 9.5" jaw opening, claims to be unbreakable under 20 ton load test. Made in France?

Can't find a whole lot of info out there on it; looks and feels well worth the $100 asking price.

Nice vise! It looks to be a rebadged Ridgid. If I could find one of those for $100, I'd be quite pleased!

Hi everyone. A couple of pics and a couple of questions.

First pic is of a Prentiss #20 swivel jaw. See that little ******* pin? It took me almost 3 months to get it out! I was so relieved to get it apart.

Other pics are of a Wilton C0 I am restoring. I love the naked finish prior to painting. Here are my questions. Did these ever come red? This bad boy started life red and it was the base paint on there. I have seen Tradesman vises in Snap-On red but not the C Series. It originally came out of a school, the gum shoved in the allen head bolts is always a dead give-away. Also this is the first one I've seen that is not marked C0 ANYWHERE on it. Date stamped 6 77. I have also presented pics of the jaws which I redid.

I am right now struggling with a big Reed double swiveller.

Pin wouldn't move...at all....if my wife was that stubborn we wouldn't have had kids.:lol_hitti

First I turned it upside down and soaked it in every lubricant known to man.

Then I hit it with a map gas torch while upside down, let it cool and hit it with penetrant.

Then using a bolt and long nut I made a jack and attempted to jack it out, I let it sit for weeks with maximum jack pressure...NOTHING.

In-between I whacked the hell out of it with a long punch and big hammer. I found if I took the bottom screw out and turned it upside down I could access, at a slight angle, the pin.

Finally I got sick of it, turned it over, sprayed penetrating oil into it and let it set for over two months. Then last Thursday I was showing my collection to someone and I picked up the static assembly to ***** about it and PRAISE JESUS the swivel jaw moved in my hands! :willy_nil I had to wait two more days but I finally got it in my Wilton C3, took an 18" punch and a 5 lb brass sledge hammer and whacked the HELL out of it. 3rd whack and it shot out like a rifle bullet!!!

I...am...sooooo...happy!!

I have to say though, I couldn't have done it without my C3. Those tall jaws and large size made that job much easier. A normal 6" vise wouldn't have had the depth to accommodate the Prentiss 20.

Next challenge? Finding all the parts for it that I have somewhere in my shop.:headscrat
