Ok so it Japanese? Is there a brand name?

There hasn't been any logos found that I know of, but these vises sure look a lot like Morgan's to me.---I always wondered if maybe Morgan out-coursed to Japan for awhile.---Don't guess they would tell you if they did.

It's taken me forever to have something worth posting in this thread, but I FINALLY got around to finishing the restore on my Hollands 24 1/2. Painted it a few days ago and assembled/lubed it today. I'll mount it on the bench here this week. It has a bit of slop just as I start to open it. I'll need to pick up a washer to shore that up. And a BIG thanks to Kevin (KMScott) for cleaning up the end of the screw and making me a new handle. It's NICE! The old handle had way too much pitting in it. I used Rustoleum Flat Soft Iron for the paint (basically a dark grey). I'm really happy with out it turned out.

I took another pic of the Hollands next to a Wilton Tradesman 1750, to give a comparison of size.

More likely the Japanese used a Morgan to copy/knock off...

Um, Japan is the way we say it in English. Japan is not a Japanese word... Nippon is...

That's a nice theory, but falls flat in reality.

Years ago when Japanese people spoke English, they referred to Japan as Nippon. Now when they speak English, they refer to Japan as Japan and the people as Japanese. You don't hear Japanese people saying Nippon when speaking English now, which is why I said it was the old way.

Regardless, a product made in Japan years ago might have used the letter N as a way to indicate it was made in Nippon/Japan. Some say Nihon, but there's an argument about that, and both words use the identical character when written.

Have a friend (Tim) who I see every few years when he comes up for a MOPAR event at National Trail Raceway.

He picked up a James O Barrett vise Meadville PA that has a patent date of Oct 23, 1883.

Saw that GETRIDAONE had a Barrett vise with a different patent date, but he had also shown pics of his vise and info on the connection that indicated that Yost bought them out. Here is link to it on GJ.

Tim's J.O. Barrett is pictured on a stand made by a friend out of the following parts.

1. Head from a cat. engine 2. Gear from a cat. transmission 3. Crankshaft from my blown 340 engine 4. Part from a cat. torque convertor 5. 3/4" x 16" x 24" steel top.

I picked up another Columbian Versa-Vise Friday at an estate sale for $20. I saw it hiding behind a grinder in the pre-sale pictures and made sure I was there at opening time to scoop it up. It had already been removed from the bench. While going through other stuff there I found the pipe jaws in the wooden box pictured here as well. It's not quite as nice as my other one with a slightly bent handle and the paint is worn more.

Zoomie--- contact this guy on the link below. He has a bunch of No2 wrenches and i contacted him the other day and he said he also has one NO3 wrench as well. I didnt ask for a NO1 but it wouldnt hurt to contact the guy to find out.

CRS: i love those old tool pictures and especially the ones with vises in them. i bet the boys across the pond might like that one even a bit more. the big Parkinson on the back of the bench looks familiar, but not sure our guys have found that one yet.

CA: are you doing all that excellent shining by hand with files and sandpaper or using a grinder or buffer? in any case your skills are to be admired. WELL DONE!

GMan: not to be outdone you are turning old bullets into like new showpieces yourself and in this case with the aid of a few new parts that look amazing. WELL DONE! also i think it's maybe been 2 or 3 days since i've seen you post another wilton bullet purchase so are you having withdrawals?

VA: more food for the big guys i'm guessing when you buy another little one, but they are easier to store (or hide).

Drives I do use the 1 inch belt sander on some parts but sparingly most of it is by hand I found that when I use a belt sander I have a tendency of removing more material then I like and it creates a lot of uneven surfaces. With a file I can manage how much and where I want the material removed from. I hand sand usually to 500 grit then hit it with the de-burring wheel and then buffing wheel.

So when my grandfather died, we split up his tools and I got his bench vise.

I have used (and abused) it for the last 12 years. My grandpa probably never lubricated this thing and I know I didn't, but it still worked great, I never had a function issue with it.

After finding this site and painting my workbenches, I realized the vise needed to be brought back also.

I had to make the Hardy. Who knows what happened to the original one. I used a hardened bolt and just kept grinding (and grinding).

I also had to purchase another Desmond Stephans vise to get a missing pipe jaw, as fabricating that was beyond my skill set.

I'll probably give away the other vise as (like mine was) it is in perfectly functioning condition.

My sawyer Oswego vise came in. It's a little rough but better than I expected.
I took it apart in about 5 minutes. Forgot to take an assembled pic. Just need a base and jaws.

I found this small vise at an estate sale few days ago, no clue what brand it is. Only marking I can find after derustifying it is a number 4 near that back side of the anvil. anyone have any ideas ?

This vise was posted before he painted it and the rear of the static side where the pin holds the swivel nut in was damaged really bad. Not sure how he fixed it but I passed because I didn't think you could fix it without welding it.

Question for anyone with a Parker 63-1/2, or has had one apart. (this is the old Art Deco exposed screw vise...)

Mine has a washer tack welded to the screw to retain the screw in the dynamic. I'm assuming this is someone's "fix" and it should have a c clip?

Sorry for the late reply, but I have taken two Parker 63-1/2 vises apart and restored them. In both cases, the washer was tack welded to the screw. A C-Clip would be a good mod to make on one.
