Rusty65:

Your Prentiss 22 looks to be in great shape.

I have one as well, but with more wear.

On mine, I haven't yet been able to extract my pin to allow the rear dynamic jaw to move, but in closeup of your pin in this pic above, it looks to be the same pin style with collar around the base of pin.

Mike

Mike, if you take out the slide and take off the base you may be able to run a punch down the bolt hole to the pin. Turn the vise on its back and load the pin up with penetrant. Let it sit a few days then try the punch.

I have a Prentiss 23 with a stuck pin that needs some love like this.

Hammerite brand hammered light green.

Believe it or not...

Minus the "Hammered" part...

That is an "Almost match", for Aston Martin Racing Green...

Oh well, not really...

But I got to post two photos of an Aston Marton DB-4GT Zagato Coupe...:rocker:

The Prentiss no 22 arrived today. It's in pretty good shape no damage besides wear and tear from over the years. The UMD is a old Burger brau beer bottle. 3cf95e3b01a44ed17c19cdf8510e30e5.jpg

Joe:

I've been at this for a few months and took slide out, flipped it, filled hole for couple weeks with PB Blaster. Then couple weeks with Acetone & ATF.

I've used a punch and tried to hit it underneath the pin, but not really able to get much swing, due to nut also being stuck in place.

Have had others that have taken a few weeks to get the pin out, but this one has been a problem.

Haven't given up yet.

Rusty & Mike--The pins on your Prentiss vises look just like the one on a Prentiss that I just restored. Look closely at the top and sides above the collar. Mine was finished with tiny dimples.

I got my swivel pin out a minute ago. it wasn't really rusted in place it just seems some one just hammered it in a little more then it should have been. But anyways does your pin have a o ring on it to? The socket is a 3/4 and it's just for size reference. Oh I assume your talking about how the collar is retained? If so yes mine had the dimples as well not the finger of death collar.

Hello, folks. New forum member, here.

Just picked up this nice Monarch 228. 4 1/2" smooth jaws, about 47 lbs. Looks pretty unmolested, and I'm thinking the paint remnants may be original. Date stamp is 6 7, which I believe is June, 1907? Or could it be June, 1897? Haven't done anything to it, just unpacked and snapped a few photos.

Also have an Athol 613 1/2 and a Prentiss 19 1/2 on the way, which should both arrive by Monday.

Cheers!

The Wilton I bought last night via Craigslist, after looking at the Wilton Special-Edition thread here on GJ. Nope, not Special Edition, and nope, no sledgehammer. OTOH, a 6 1/2" vice for less than the MSRP of the 5 1/2, I'll deal with it.

Hit an estate sale this morning and grabbed this great clamp on vise. This style clamp on has evaded me till today, very happy. Its been around awhile and has a few dings but works fine. The people running the sale always have great prices as they want the stuff to move. I had 10 items in a bucket and she priced them at $1 each.

Hello All,

I don't make a habit of posting ads, this isn't mine and I don't know the owner or if they are on the forum, but I will delete it if asked to...

Check out this dandy on eBay, that logo looks like it could have came off of a cave wall!:lol_hitti

I have a relatively old Prentiss #182-1/2 on Dayids, but not as old as I think this one is...:dunno:

Anyone have an approximate date on this one for me?

Anyway, I like it!

Thank you in advance!

Great looking vises. Did you add the handles to the clamp down screws? The one pictured in the ad you posted does not have one and neither does the one I found.
And it looks like they are still in business.

https://www.boker.de/us/index.php?c=2003

The one like yours came with a handle. I made a handle for the smaller one thinking it was missing. I found the ad afterwards so it is likely someone added the handle on the larger one also.

The bar type was Pat. In 1893 by Lewis Tool. I saw an ad dated 1898 with Lewis still promoting it. The ad you posted with Prentiss & Lewis Pat. was 1910 so the age would be in that range.

Ah, thanks for that. Prentiss / Monarch's don't carry a date stamp, as some others do then? Didn't know that.

I finally brought the Rock Island 94 home from my dad's garage. There's years of paint on it, but it's solid. I didn't remember the damage to the slide. My dad passed away last year so I can't ask him how that happened or when he got the vise.

We found this old picture of dad looking stylish - complete with cigar, and me looking like I just got caught with something. The picture isn't the best, but he's at the Rock Island, and I think making headers for his old '34 ford 2-door sedan. One of the fenders is hanging on the wall.

You can guess that the vise isn't leaving my possession except to go to one of my kids.

Mlisac: great story and picture of Dad. i think i might still have a pair of paints like that in mom's attic. that Rock Island has taken a beating and keeps on ticking so spiffing it up a little it could be your go to vise.

even though you have one of my favorite vises sitting right behind it. that Craftsman 519x is what model # and did you restore it or find it that nice?

I posted awhile back about this Reed 105R my son-in-law got for $34 at an estate sale. I don't have a before picture, but it had some ugly yellow paint when he got it. He used Rustoleum Flat Soft Iron primer/paint. It makes a nice finish and looks graphite gray to me. I think I'm going to use it on my Parker 974 1/2. Will get some more photos later.

Cope,

That's a NICE vise!! And I used that exact paint color for my Hollands 24 1/2 vise. It looks great IMO.

Saw a garage sale on my way to one of my customers so I stopped. I was buying a couple items and negotiating and saw an old 64 impala in the garage, so I started talking about my old tool addiction, etc. I asked him what he had and he said he had a couple vises and to come back tomorrow. I told him I was busy tomorrow so he ended up bringing a few out. He brought out a couple open screw vises which I was not interested in, and this cool little blacksmith vise. I bought it for $12. I haven't had a chance to really look at it closely. Is there anyway to identify this little guy?

It's a Craftsman 5191. I lucked into it at a sale. All I've done is clean and lube it. I just love the patina, and it's smooth like butter.

Haha! Great pic - those Plaid pants - I'm guessing 70's or so?

Yep, it's early 70's. Those pants are pretty sweet.

The 67 is just a reference number during production so the 2 halves of the vise made it through as one so parts didn't get mismatched. I would have to agree that the monarch is in great shape and I would say that it is pre 1920 for sure.

OK, thanks again. Now, on further inspection of the Monarch 228 that I posted yesterday, I see there is a cast in number in a small raised section on the side opposite the lion's head. Looks like 5 digits, although the first one is hard to see - may be an 8 or 3 (or B?). The next four are clear 0133. That might make sense as a date code? Interesting it is raised in the casting.

Here is the next in my collection, an Athol 613 1/2 in pretty good shape, but with a good layer of grime. As with the Monarch I posted yesterday, this is just as I got it, without any attempt to clean it just yet. Based on one area that was cleaned up by the PO, it looks like there is much of what appears to be original blue-gray paint under the grime.

There is a spring on the lead screw, so if I understand that means it's a bit newer than some of the earliest vises in this series. I haven't found anything that looks like a date code just yet.

Jaws look to be in great shape, and overall it doesn't appear that this vise was used too hard.

Just curious does anyone have any literature on the old Athol cog handle vises? I recently picked up a model 728 3.5in swivel jaw/base and cog handle.

Just curious does anyone have any literature on the old Athol cog handle vises? I recently picked up a model 728 3.5in swivel jaw/base and cog handle.

That's an awesome vise. Is that the one from ebay?

My first Tradesman restoration....1760 before and after. I do have a factory Wilton decal for the side, but figured I should wait for the paint to dry more. I don't know why the Tradesman line doesn't get more praise...pretty nice vises with pipe jaws and more than what most folks will ever need.
