Hello Vise Friends,

There are many great looking and interesting vises that have been featured by GJers throughout the years. With as many vises featured on the main Vises of GJ Thread (2449 pages at this moment in time), and other vise threads around here, it would be interesting to see who has the best of the best for 2016.

The rules of this "beauty pageant" are simple: You're welcome to enter your vise or nominate another GJer's vise here. It can be a vise that you (or another GJer) owns, has sold. Please don't download & paste a Google Image. I want to keep this in the family.

Based on the majority of vises that I've seen here, I've listed the categories for vise pageant entries below.

Vise Pageant Categories:

I. Bench Vises (Both solid and swivel base).
A. Heavy Duty. AKA machinist's vise. Generally made from solid iron or dropped forged steel. Brands include Athol, Chas Parker, Reed, etc.
B. Medium to Light Duty. AKA general purpose vise. Generally made from hollowed cast iron. Brands include the economy versions Craftsman, Wilton, Columbian, etc.
C. Combo. These vises have pipe jaw inserts under the main jaw faces. Brands include Athol, Wilton, Chas Parker, etc.
D. Open Screw. These are very light duty vises that don't use the slide to cover the main spindle. However, some of them are so damn cool that I had to list them in the categories. Brands include Parker 63-1/2, Wilton Shop King etc.
E. Pivot Jaw. These vises have a jaw, on the stationary body that independently pivots to hold irregular shaped objects. Brands include American Scale No. 75H, Prentiss No. 22, etc.
F. Multi Position. These vises rotate horizontally and vertically. Brands include Chas Parker 474, Wilton Flip-Grip, etc.
G. Home Made Vises. I know that there's some great talent here. If you've built your own bench vise, please show it.

II. Woodworking Vise. Used mainly for woodworking. These vises usually mount underneath the workbench. Brands include Morgan 10A, Emmert, etc.

III. Pipe Vise. Used for pipe work. Brands include Ridgid, Reed, etc.

IV. Milling Machine & Drill Press Vises. Brands include Palmgren, Bridgeport, etc.

V. Best Overall Restoration. There has to be a "crowned beauty vise" in this pageant.

VI. Biggest Restoration Transformation. Most vises are "clean-paint-polish". This category is for the vises that were brought back from the dead (broken blob of rust to a gem).

VII. Folk Art. This category is where you can show off how you repurposed or up-cycled a broken vise. Example: You made your broken vise into an ash tray.

Prizes, trophies, cash awards...There is none. Just the opportunity to show off your best vises and most interesting vises. You'll have bragging rites.

Have fun!

I haven't been at this long, and it's probably not even in the running, but I'll throw my Parker 975 in for VI Biggest Restoration Transformation...blob of rust to a gem.

GMAN: great job on that old Parker and your vise spiffing up skills are top notch even though you just started doing this only a few months ago. WELL DONE.

Mark: thanks for starting this thread and i'll try to make some time to go through the thread and my pictures and see which vises i can post up some nominations for.

as far as the category of making a broken vise look amazing and finding another purpose for it can you post up your book ends cause they are amazing.

cheers

Bob & ALL: well i don't have to think too hard to tell you the top three vise stands i liked that were all made by ROYCE and his vises are not too bad either.

ALL: i'm still thinking about the best (and worst) vises so hopefully some of you are doing the same cause on this thread we could really talk about them. i can't recall if TriJeff's bright green Snap on wilton tradesman was this year or last, but i can tell you it was maybe the first vise in a long time that made me think about painting a vise. i love the grabber green color and the Snap on decal makes it pop with is steel shining loud and clear.

I enter this in the II G category, home made carpenter's vise. The jaws are 14" x 5" with a 10" reach. All of the metal parts aside from common hardware were made on a 1958 atlas 12x36 lathe, and there are threaded hardpoints on 3" centers along both jaws to mount various forming dies for sheet metal. Thrust washers under the head of the lead screw are trimmed of hat sections from removing bushings on a 747 flap track. The big blue Bonney wrench is the key.

G-man,
Great looking Parker. How did you get the slide to look like it went through a black oxide treatment?

Nikh,
Thanks for your entry & an interesting story.

All,
I noticed comments about adding different catagories:
I chose a limited amount of catagories for what I thought were the majority of vise types that guys & gals had. Sorry hat clamp on Vises slipped my mind.
Although the list should be kept simple and to the point, please feel free to add categories if you want.

This is your contest. Have fun with it.

That's just a light coat of BLO and diffused lighting more than anything, but that does give me a good idea. I'll test my theory and report on the vise repair thread!

Here is my submission for Class C, V, and VI, a Chicago Wilton C0.

It was in pretty rough shape when I got it, but it cleaned up very nicely I think! I stripped it down to bare metal, sanded out the bumps and dents, and polished up the jaws and handles. I had to make new swivel nut handles because they were both missing for some reason.

Anyway, let me know what you all think!

I must say, that is an awesome way to make some book ends. I almost cried when i seen you cut them in half :scared: but then i read you made them out of broken vises. Thats cool in 2 ways, its an awesome idea plus you keep those old pieces of history out of the dumpster and made them useful and beautiful:bowdown:

Mark: those bookend vises are AWESOME. if there was maybe an improvement to make on the design i might tell you to put some thick metal plate for a base under the vise 1/2's. still i think you might win the best use of a broken vise category with any one of those.

Mark: keep on these guys cause there were a ton of great restorations, finds and vises to remember more than just a post or two.

ALL: so i nominated the Bright GRABBER GREEN of TriJeff's Snap On Wilton tradesman which he has painted more than a few vises this color. for a couple more nominees for best paint i really like the WRINKLE look and here is JReb's red Desmond Stephen and Getridofone's Hartman's clamp on vise and his black Rock Island.

of course i still like my BLO. maybe a GRABBER GREEN with a wrinkle texture if TJ is up to it before the year ends?

There have been so many awesome vise restoration projects posted here on GJ that I hesitate to post my own, but here she is.
A Wilton C1 combination vise, picked up at auction, and brought back to daily duty.

I use the hell out of this vise, and can't imagine what life was like before I had it.

Excellent vise there on a beyond excellent workbench!
Looks like the same color gray as the 500N on my bench.
I'm still on the lookout for a C0 or a C1 to trade for it.

Unfortunately, not going to happen in 2016 ... just got new house Tues and new baby will arrive any day now, so hands a little full! But a wrinkle grabber green sounds like a good challenge when the new shop is up and running.

Award Name
Did you know that "The Oscar" was named for an uncle of somebody in the Motion Picture business? They thought he looked like the bald headed statue. That got me thinking about a name for the Vise Awards. I would like to nominate my 7th grade shop teacher's name - Mr. Stolpe (long e sound at the end).

And now the winner of this year's Stolpe for Best Restoration is.....

What do you think? Any other suggestions for names?

CRS,
I'm not particular to the name of the award. This is for vise people to have fun.

However...Where is your entry? Please show your vises here.

Mark: I was having fun with the suggestion for naming the award. I thought maybe some other members would want to make suggestions.

I nominated one of my vises for "Ugliest Vise" last year. I could nominate it again cuz it's still ugly.

All,
The entries look GREAT! Keep 'em coming!

I'm going to enter my Parker 63-1/2 in the Restoration Transformation category.
1st picture: This little guy was a blob of rust before the restoration.
2nd picture: The blemishes have been preserved.
3rd picture: Originally, the spindle retainer was spot welded. I cut a grove in it and installed an E-clip.
4th & 5th pictures: With the overall color red, the embellishments are polished iron.

Now it sits quietly in my bar room.

Mark: It was you. I should have remembered. After I saw your beautiful Parker 63 1/2 with polished metal lettering I wanted to get one to do that myself. Just a couple of weeks ago I found an 83 1/2. I'm gonna take my time and polish it up. Maybe I'll be posting it for the Visees of 2017.

CRS:
To get the polished embellishments, I polished them with ScotchBrite after removing the rust, but before I primed & painted it. Then, while applying the coats of primer & paint, I would use a paper towel dampened with lacquer thinner and gently wipe off the top of the letters and ribs. After that, the entire vise (except for the spindle & slide) got 5 coats of clear coat.

I'm looking forward to see how yours turns out.

My Favorite Color Combination of 2016
The main color is Rustoleum Metallic Rust and the lettering is Copper enamel. I think the lens on my camera was fogged up when I took these photos. It kind of has a Boudoir Photo effect.

Some of these are REALLY awesome resto jobs! I wish had a couple vises as nice as you guys made; I cleaned up a few in the past but I lose patience and to be honest, I'm gonna pound on them in short order, so what's the point in me making them too pretty to use?

Subscribed, keep up the great work, fellas!

All,
I'm going to enter my Vise Book End Sets into the Folk Art Category.
They were all built from damaged vises
I don't know how I haven't seen these yet.. But I'm stealing this idea if you don't mind [emoji4] [emoji106]

Cheers
