Hello Vise Friends,
There are many great looking and interesting vises that have been featured by GJers throughout the years. With as many vises featured on the main Vises of GJ Thread (2449 pages at this moment in time), and other vise threads around here, it would be interesting to see who has the best of the best for 2016.
The rules of this "beauty pageant" are simple: You're welcome to enter your vise or nominate another GJer's vise here. It can be a vise that you (or another GJer) owns, has sold. Please don't download & paste a Google Image. I want to keep this in the family.
Based on the majority of vises that I've seen here, I've listed the categories for vise pageant entries below.
Vise Pageant Categories:
I. Bench Vises (Both solid and swivel base).
A. Heavy Duty. AKA machinist's vise. Generally made from solid iron or dropped forged steel. Brands include Athol, Chas Parker, Reed, etc.
B. Medium to Light Duty. AKA general purpose vise. Generally made from hollowed cast iron. Brands include the economy versions Craftsman, Wilton, Columbian, etc.
C. Combo. These vises have pipe jaw inserts under the main jaw faces. Brands include Athol, Wilton, Chas Parker, etc.
D. Open Screw. These are very light duty vises that don't use the slide to cover the main spindle. However, some of them are so damn cool that I had to list them in the categories. Brands include Parker 63-1/2, Wilton Shop King etc.
E. Pivot Jaw. These vises have a jaw, on the stationary body that independently pivots to hold irregular shaped objects. Brands include American Scale No. 75H, Prentiss No. 22, etc.
F. Multi Position. These vises rotate horizontally and vertically. Brands include Chas Parker 474, Wilton Flip-Grip, etc.
G. Home Made Vises. I know that there's some great talent here. If you've built your own bench vise, please show it.
II. Woodworking Vise. Used mainly for woodworking. These vises usually mount underneath the workbench. Brands include Morgan 10A, Emmert, etc.
III. Pipe Vise. Used for pipe work. Brands include Ridgid, Reed, etc.
IV. Milling Machine & Drill Press Vises. Brands include Palmgren, Bridgeport, etc.
V. Best Overall Restoration. There has to be a "crowned beauty vise" in this pageant.
VI. Biggest Restoration Transformation. Most vises are "clean-paint-polish". This category is for the vises that were brought back from the dead (broken blob of rust to a gem).
VII. Folk Art. This category is where you can show off how you repurposed or up-cycled a broken vise. Example: You made your broken vise into an ash tray.
Prizes, trophies, cash awards...There is none. Just the opportunity to show off your best vises and most interesting vises. You'll have bragging rites.
Have fun!
