1935 Gas Station Resurrection

Been a long couple days..started early yesterday afternoon tearing out the filled in overhead door opening and getting it resized for the 10x8 door.
It hasn't rained here in weeks..of course as soon as you open up a wall here comes the all day rain. After getting the door opening resized I threw a few sheets of OSB covered with plastic to help keep some heat in and water out.
Insulated, vapor barrier installed then covered with 3/4" plywood.
Today was garage door install day...
Still need to set the spring tension and cut the rear hanger brackets. All 3 of the 8' doors were shorted the cables, but both 7' doors have theirs.
I'm going to pay a visit to Menards in the morning to see whats up with that and pick up the metal trim for the outside framing. Once I did all I could with the door I still had a little time so I installed the lower base trim in the front area.

First door is fully installed, picked up the missing cables from Menards this morning. Was able to get the springs set and a little fine tuning on the track. Works great and looks pretty good too. Its suppose warm up a bit Friday so I'm planning on doing the outside trim work then.

Will you be alternating the white and green pattern, on the wood work, down the side of the building? It's looking really great.

First garage door looks great.
I'm not sure yet, the metal trim I bought to wrap the door opening is white. For now I think I'll probably just paint everything white. Some of the other door openings most likely won't get painted till spring anyways so it'll give me some time to decide.
The metal I'm going to use to finish the door opening.

I have been a Sinclair fan for years.
However, being from South Africa and living in England since 2002, we have none of that.
I also love your gas pumps.
So I created an alternative brand using the Sinclair colours a few years ago. I also wanted my own gas pump, but they are way too costly for me.
So I built one.

At some point when my life returns to a reasonable level of normal, I will add a carport in front of my shop and then it will be either Sinclair or my own brand, either way I would have to make up everything myself, so time will tell.
I love everything you are and have done so far.
My friend Clem Johnson of tubatrucks.com lived in a Sinclair gas station for years in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Interesting door tracks. The top rollers have their own upper track & the rest of the rollers use the lower track. Its actually for low headroom applications. With this type track you only need 10 inches of headroom above the door. In this room I had about 11.5. Traditional track wouldn't have worked.

Trimmed out the outside of the overhead door this afternoon. The area filled in above the door is primed, but unless we get some warmer weather probably won't get painted till spring.
I scored a lot of 22 old Hot Rod magazines on ebay a few days ago. All are 1950's I just ordered two metal racks to display them in the office.

I do have a 31 Model A pickup that keeps getting pushed to the side
I'm sure that Ford 31 model A pickup will be looking awesome.

Thanks for bringing this up. I am going to be installing a 7' tall 6' wide garage door in my work shop I'm building. I will ask about head space for the door. It may not work in my building with a ceiling height 8'. I may have to build the ceiling higher.
I'm about 7 weeks into this project and feel I've made decent progress. The original front section is nearing completion. I have one small corner piece of drywall to finish and paint, change out a light fixture, lay down the plastic tile floor and that will be about it. I finished up all the trim, wired the new outlets and replaced the existing ones this weekend.
For this front room since its going to be used mostly for a showroom of sorts with a bit of sheetmetal bending equipment, I have decided to put down a plastic floor tile. Racedeck wannabe if you will.
Its good motivation (for me atleast) to look back at what I started with and its current state.

IMHO the only thing "missing" are some period Mac Tools and the like calendars.

Forgive me if I have missed it, I have read through the whole thread and don't recall seeing anything. What are your plans for the long painted wall out front? Do you plan to hit it with another coat of maroon, or strip it all back down to bare brick?
Either way, once you get some paint on the doors, and touch that up, the front will look great. It looks amazing already with the work you have done.

I miss the big Easter basket. You coulda put a dummy motor in there with lights coming outta the headers.
I don't think much has been brought up on here about what the plans are for the wall out front. Next spring I'm going to hit it with my power washer to get the loose paint off then paint it an off white/creme color. With it maroon I think it takes away from the building itself because it blends into the wall. With a lighter color on the wall the focus will be more on the building itself. The flower bed that is still remaining will be removed and a concrete pad poured in its place. The stone on the other side by the wall will be replaced with a smaller river pebble like I used in the other beds by the front doors.

That place is going to be cool! If I could, I would love to own one of the old bolt together stations. There is one about 30 miles south of me that is the reverse layout of my grandfather's 76 station he had in the 60's-70's.
Which division do you work at? I spent 15 years working for a dealer (RDO Equipment), hands down, Deere is a great manufacture to have on your side! In late 92 I was able to go on a fly in, what a great experience. I have no idea how the parts pickers didn't kill each other buzzing around the PDC (Milan). I imagine the place has changed since I was last there, even then the were experimenting it automation.

HD--Outstanding work. Love your pictures. I understand that the white/cream side wall will make the building look great. BUT every time I see it, my mind conjures up an image of Wile Coyote painting a tunnel on it.

Looking at before and after pics is a good way to stay motivated. You have accomplished quite a bit in 7 weeks. Hell, I just hit 260 weeks and you've already caught up to me.

Wall could have the green and red Coca-Cola advert painted on then aged. It would fit the period and break up the length.

Agreed, would look great with some kind of vintage painted advertising.
I work for the Des Moines Works. We build self propelled sprayers, cotton pickers, grain drills and tillage equipment. I'm sure you would be impressed if you walked through any of the factories today. It still amazes me how much our plant has changed just in the 12.5 yrs I've been there.

Very good chance of that happening..with vintage red porcelain Sinclair letters and a red stripe above it on the wall.
Seems to be positive, most are happy something is being done with it. A couple years ago the Fareway store across the street was considering buying it to tear down so they could build a new bigger store. Thankfully they decided to just remodel the one they have.
Most everything will be moved to this building. The home shop will become pretty much just the paint shop and thats it.

We were just discussing the self propelled sprayers today. One of our customers just ordered his new unit and the boys were dumbfounded that it will have a 120' boom. Myself and another employee worked in the ag industry for a long time and started telling them about the guidance systems available to the farmers, when I described how Swath Pro (I think that was it, been gone from RDO for 7 years now) worked they were in awe.
I have no doubt I would be very impressed with the progress. Just looking at the number of additions to PDC on Google maps is mind boggling! I have to say I miss working at a Deere dealer but not the one I was at. They change management every couple years and I swear they get more and more egotistical with every change and I don't play well with people that expect *** kissing.
I made a move to an industrial and hydraulic hose shop, get to see many of the same customers and way less stress.TimeWarpF100

Some more demo work has begun in the back. Started opening up the walls in what will become the second bay. Found a couple old doorways. the north one was enlarged for a window. Notice how the waste pipe is supported ..some quality plumbing right there, The rest room is going to be relocated so all that mess will go away
I believe this is a result from only having a 100 amp panel and not enough breakers at least thats what I hope. This masterpiece is basically a junction box for all the lighting and outlets in the building. A new 200 amp panel is going to be installed.
Strated pulling up the last piece of carpet in the building and found a tile floor under it. At first I was like great..until I realized how easy it breaks up and can be removed. Way easier than trying to get carpet glue off the concrete.
The next few days are suppose to be in the mid 40s so I'm going to concentrate on getting the overhead door installed in the 1st shop bay. Opened everything up last night on the inside so itll be ready to finish demoing the opening once I get back from unloading my trailer at the landfill this morning
