I am calling this the craigslist shop because I am building it as inexpensive as I can. It will be a 40 x 60 steel truss building. It will mainly be used to do metalwork and build Hotrods. I am paying as I go and doing most of the work myself (with some friends when possible) so it will not be as fast as most builds here. I have done some work and bought a lot of the materials. In the next few days I'll post some pics of the progress up to now then I'll try to post as things are accomplished.

I'll be watching this as I've been doing the same thing (smaller) and am finally close to actually start putting up the frame (which I found on Craigslist). I'll be glad to work in mine without a payment when complete.

Sounds like a great project.

There are some amazing threads on here about the very same thing you are doing. IIRC, one guy bought stuff for like, two years, before starting assembly. Kept a record of what he spend and it was incredible.

Don't forget Habitat if there is one by you. And good luck!

@ pwc - Ive been watching your build, looking good!

@chruler - yep many things bought off Craigslist. Cant beat the prices!

@ jc23 - I've tried to keep track of each step, keeping snaps of the CL add when possible. I'm tracking the cost as well.

I built the same size shed from scratch, with help from a few mates, and relatives.
Nearly all of the shed was built from new materials but I did fabricate all of the steel work, and bought all of the purlins and cladding all cut to size.
Fitting it out I scrounged a lot of materials, but the overall cost was cheap enough that I got it all done without going into debt.
Good luck with the build, and remember we like lots of pics.

heres a link to my build

@bczygan- Thanks! I built this truck in 99 or 2000. It was built as a shop truck and used that way ever since.

@bgarett- I have my trusses and metal, I'll be posting more pics soon. But thanks!

@ budman01- The 52 was a trade, so no money involved. It is an older boom type wrecker. It has a dually two speed rear, air brakes, 351W, C6 trans. plans are still open for it. Once I'm in the new shop who knows what might happen...

The dirt work started in September of 2014 as did the parts gathering and money stashing, my daughters wedding, some dental work, and an unexpected tax bill made the money part take awhile longer!

I picked what looked like a nice flat spot for the building, it was my old garden spot. Notice the rocks at ground level in the foreground of the second picture. I live in a place known as 'red rock hill'. It was named that for a reason!

The T-posts represent the building outline.

Exit61 That is great!

My concrete for the building is going to be around $5000. I am doing the work myself as well. When I get the time to post more you'll see I did stem walls because of some rock troubles. That took about 18 yards, without that I would be all in at about $3200 for the 40 x60 floor only.

Motofool - CL is a great place to get machinery. I have bought quite a few pieces as well, I wish I had save the adds for them too.

What looked like a flat spot to build on turned out to be almost 30 inches low in one corner once I fired up the laser. So I started digging with my tractor.
Of course I hit rocks so I dug them out.

While I was doing the dirt work I was watching CL and found some deals. So I picked them up.
Sheet metal - There were more than 100 26' foot sheets of roofing along with several 12' sheets and some 8'sheets, and the red sheets, around 10600 pounds on my truck and trailer. Enough to do my whole building all for $350!! great price! It cost me a trailer tire and it flattened my leaf springs on my truck but still worth the trip.
Garage doors-I ended up getting 4 garage doors so he cut me a deal on all four for $325.
Insulation- A coworker was building a barn so we both went and got a trailer load of the foam insulation so he cut us a volume discount to $10 per sheet. I bought 77 sheets, enough to do roof and walls $770

Awe is hoping you bought a 40x60 shop on Craigslist. Interesting name though caught my attention.

Brian

This is what I thought. A fews weeks back, I came across a 45x60 steel building on CL locally. $15K, engineered for my county and never ASSEMBLED! Why oh why did I buy a new truck this year :headscrat ??

Forget being impressed by the "Craigslist-fu" - I'm impressed by how much of a workhorse that truck is! Some folks will say "I still use it as a truck" and post a picture of a few boxes from BestBuy or Lowes. But that picture of the trailer with insulation gets me. Did you get it all in one trip?

@ brent - I actually DO use my truck. Yes got it all in one trip! I put it to work the weekend after I got it together back in 2000, the bed wasn't painted yet and it made 3 trips to the dump. While there a guy said "I cant believe you brought that to the dump" I told him 'somebody took it to the dump when it was brand new'.

Here is a satellite view of my place. The top near the middle is where the new shop will be. My old shop is the small building behind the house. This shot is from 2013 before any work had started.

After the dirt work was completed I began my forms (stem walls at the west side). I borrowed a backhoe attachment for my tractor and went after it. It is hard to tell in the pic but the footing trench in the 2nd pic is 12 inches wide, 18 inches deep in the foreground and 54 inches deep at the far side. In the last pic you can see the forms are more than 3 blocks below the original ground level. They are sitting on the rock that stopped my digging, 18 feet long at least 5 feet across and more than 2 feet thick. My little ford couldn't move that one! I put 6 inch red head anchor bolts into the rock to tie it to the concrete in this corner. To build my forms I used 2 x 10s 20 feet long (because I can reuse them for the building bands). Then I screwed them to OSB sitting flat on the ground with braces every 18-24 inches. The rocks held them flat on the ground and the rebar stakes kept them in line. I used the laser to set the top of the forms level.

I back filled the forms with dirt to hold them in place. The first pic shows the corner that sat on the big rock with some anchor bolts in place. I put in 50 bolts in this area along with 1/2 inch rebar. I hung 8" J-bolts from a board across the form tops with sticks of rebar sitting in the J of the bolts. These are for the trusses to bolt to. I put multiple layers of rebar on the rebar stakes in the deeper parts of the forms. The rebar stakes were a CL find. I bought them for $5 a box, I bought 5 boxes for $25 and will have some left-over. They have places to hang rebar every 3 inches up the stake.

I realized I did not say how much concrete was used and the cost of the concrete. The placement for the footings was 17 yards at a cost of $1903 including fuel charge and taxes. I wish you could buy concrete on CL!
Also I forgot the picture of the reusable form wood.

I am going to try to post a running total of the materials as they are used. So at this point we have:

Form wood and deck screws $ 130
Form wood to be reused (2x10) - $ 439
1/2 inch rebar - $ 90
J bolts and redhead anchors $41
Total materials $ 700 + concrete $1900
Running total $2600

The trusses I bought from CL. The add was for 5 sets of 40 foot trusses at $500. Spaced at 10 feet apart I would need 7 sets to make my 60 feet but I figured 5 sets was better than none so I went to get them. He actually had 6 sets but one set was damaged on the leg of one truss. I bought all 6 sets for $550 basically $50 per half truss and the damaged one free. The legs are 6 inch structural channel so easily fixed and since they were only 8 ft wall height, I would be adding to them anyway. I couldn't find any pictures of the trailer load of trusses, if I find one I'll post it.

I'm diggin this thread, building a shop on the cheap and using that old F1 as what it was intended for.

Myself and friend of mine went to a swap in his 32 Ford pickup one time. I was building a 61 Chevy pick and we came upon a complete front clip for it. Bill says you gonna get that? I said I would if we were in my truck. He said that's what I brought the moving blankets for, in case you or I found something.

@txvwnut - Thanks! I built it with 3/4 ton suspension so I could work it! Its hard to see in the pic but I built a simple A-frame lift for a job I had installing 'knock pipes' to keep 18 wheelers out of a church parking lot. A-frame drops in the holes where the tailgate goes then a chain ties to the headache rack. it has lifted an engine but that's about as much as I dare.

I'm a bit of a vw guy as well. I have a 70 westy, 69 bug, 66 baha bug, 4 ghias 66,69,70,74 (only the 70 drives) and 5 kitcars Bradley I and II, Kelmark, Volkaro, and GT40k.
