what is the date on the slide if you get a chance to look?

also i guess you are tired of painting so might as well buy a few NOS vises until it heats up again.

The slide is marked 12-68. I don't mind the painting so much, it's the prep work that gets old...and dirty (sort of like me, now that I think of it).

I think I actually enjoy restoring them more than I do just having them around, so I've sold about half a dozen. So far people have been thrilled with them and I'm happy to see them be put into use.

I just did a mental count, and I have 11 in the shop now. A couple are staying (like the 600), a couple are ready to go to new homes, and a couple I'm planning to restore and sell. I guess I'm getting close to having owned 20

Sounds similar to what I do. I have had close to 40 vises of all kinds ove the last year or so and found that Wiltons sell for the most and there is always a buyer eventually. I only have two Wiltons left a baby bullet and a #4. there are a few I wish I would of kept but the new owners are happy. Loving the Reed 404.5 and thinking about starting a collection of that style of Reeds

Anyone have any information on a Holland's round slide keystone model J vise. It looks like it's possible to be a 7in jaw but not sure.

I have a Reed 108, Columbian chipping vise 8" and a Parker 60 that are not here to be with the others. Would be great to have a photo of all the big ones. The Hollands is the heaviest by far but there is about 1 turn before it opens. They went cheap on the screw slack adjustment. My favorite is the Reed 208. It is the nicest vise that size that they made. The columbian is the poorest made in my opinion. It is not ver heavu on the slide and does not have the iron in it the others have. You can actually still buy parts for the morgan. When I got it the nut was missing and I got a new one for $40. Each vise has come from a different state. The Morgan is the only one found in Kansas. If anyone wants more photos or info please ask. There is 3118# og My goal is to set up a small museum of vises and blacksmith equipment. I want to have the complete line of reed vises to display as well as others. I get closer every week Hope you enjoy

Well after getting it cleaned up I think I am going to go with BLO or maybe Hammered light blue. Looked into the wrinkle grabber green and can't seem to find that color locally and getting it to wrinkle may be tricky. Really leaning towards BLO. I did noticed one of the removable jaws is about 1/8 shorter then the other no big deal unless you have OCD like me so I will be ordering a set from Kevin soon.

Yeah, this one is an absolute dandy, Cro ... you will be kicking yourself if you let it go! I've got the older style 403.5, soooooo jealous of yours with the replaceable jaws and split nut collar. Just a gem.

I was the 2nd caller on this glorious ******* today. Yes, an 8" Reed 108. It is sold, but not to me. I even offered a ridiculous amount of $$ to try and have the guy unethically undercut the buyer, how unfortunate that I meet the one guy on cl who is ethical. Buy the way...it went for $100 and the price included that stand and a 5" Parker. I feel like killing myself I really do...

Jaws look retrofitted, I could be wrong but it appears they were done right. The stand is the BOMB

I've seen that stand or something like it before.....would it have been used for another purpose? It is insanely heavily built.

Now that is a rare REED, they just didn't make many with the split-nut, that logo, replaceable jaws, flat nose, swivel base, much less the swivel jaw... I've only seen swivel jaws with the previously mentioned attributes in 403-1/2 and 404-1/2 and the only other models I recall seeing with the same qualities, minus the swivel jaw of course, are the 4C, 3C, 2C, 1C... I am sure to get corrected on this, and I look forward to it as I will likely make you an offer, HAHA!

DRIVES, I believed you asked me a while back what my favorite vises were, the ones listed above are, I have the 403-1/2 (x2), 404-1/2, 4C, 3C, 2C, 1C, with the above features, I can't find any more for sale...

MOOR: sorry you missed the give away deal on the Rock Island 597 that is one of my favorite vises and i doubt at $50 it was as nice as mine, but still a nice vise that weighs about 130 pounds. any news on the Monarch which is another KEEPER?

yes the big red POS that is asking about twice what a new one would cost is a PASS. of course it will work but for that money you can get a REAL vise and not an imitation.

ZOOMIE: i agree REED's 400 and C series vises are hard to beat.

CA: so BLO sounds like a great idea, but if you want to try the Wrinkle Grabber Green on it or another vise since you have plenty of skill i think GETRIDOFONE does a Wrinkle texture paint and then shoots the color on over the wrinkle that is already on the vise. of course maybe nobody better at GRABBER GREEN than TRIJEFF so if you have any questions a couple emails or PM's to those two might get you on the right path.

ALL: i picked up a small Craftsman 1950's or maybe late 40's vise yesterday and one of those Craftsman L shaped vises. i almost didn't buy the L shaped one cause it felt like a toy, but i'll post up pictures and maybe test it out and see how it works.

Thanks for the compliment but I am still a hack compared to a lot of the guys on this forum and your work is right up there. I did find a grey that I am itching to use its called Winter grey by Rustoleum it has a blue hue to it. I shot a piece of Railroad track to see it on something made of steel and it might win me over today.

TJ: maybe after the move you can try a WRINKLED GRABBER GREEN on one of those you want to keep. might take 4 cans to do the 98, but man wouldn't that look cool. hope you are moving to a bigger place or better neighborhood or both. also hope it's a decent commute for your jobs and shopping.

Zoomie: you are a character so any other clues since i guess it wasn't a gal? since you have enough anvils and old iron to make a nice Christmas decoration any pictures of the anvils sorted with a few lights on them to post?

CA: whatever color you pick should work out ok. would you mind taking a bunch of pictures of your 404.5 with BLO on it cause i'm debating on putting more BLO over the faded grey on mine or stripping it. i'm thinking stripping it might look better.

Yea I got my paws on the monarch got me some expensive learning today vise works good but one of the mounting holes was broke off ( didn't even notice it )and I found a weld repair after disassembly also found a 30 dollar Colombian 5 1/2 at the swapmeet

MOOR: unfortunately we can't always see or know what a previous owner's repairs or issues were especially if buying from an estate, relative or just a picker. it looks like the vise works which is a good thing.

don't you agree that vise is a hefty old piece of US IRON? i think i know a member near you that might give you what you paid for it or maybe better yet trade you for something you might like more so PM me if you are not happy.

from your picture it also looks like the replaceable jaw on the dynamic might be a replacement that I (we) couldn't tell as well from the first picture that was taken from above.

if you might happen to know a good machinist i bet they could make you a new vise nut especially since you have a decent one for them to copy. also maybe make you a new set of jaws and you'd have a vise worth twice what you paid for it and more usable.

Picked this Vise this fall at a consignment auction. I cant find any markings on it. It has some trim lines on it and it looks well made. 5.5 inch jaws. Thanks guys for any info, looking to unload this and a lot of other items taking floor space

Zoomie: it has all the looks of a Prentiss 58 or do tell? other than maybe needing a new handle that looks to be in great shape. I'm guessing you were smiling all the way home. cheers

Moor: that is one of the most popular most used bench vises bought in the 60's and 70's. not my favorite, but they do hold up and were built to last.

ALL: i'm not sure why i can't say no to a vise or tool with the Craftsman heritage badge on it, but this 4 inch vise is in pretty decent shape and guessing it weighs about 30+ pounds. other than a couple bends in the handle and some dirt and crud to clean up it's badge and paint are in pretty decent shape.

also picked up this old L shaped Craftsman wood vise that seemed more like a toy, but i'm sure it works ok. i'm guessing it's made of aluminum cause i bet it doesn't weigh much more than a pound or two.

Went picking at private shops this weekend. Here is what I found.

First, this very nice 8" Eron swivel base. A big nice vise.

Next this very original 4" Parker. This is nice because of original black finish and original yellow paint on the lettering.

Last a nice original Rockwell Uni-vise.

Are you sure the mounting hole is broke off does it have three holes remaining or two holes ?

Finally got that imported Yost FSV-5 mounted to the truck. Gave it a quick test by clamping up a floor jack handle (by hand, no cheater pipe!), and standing on it.

Small but mighty. I think this one's a keeper.

Drives--I think that little C-man wood vise is for job site use by carpenters. Clamp it to a sawhorse and you have an assistant for dealing with long boards.
