mine definitely do not glow when off. Even before I redid all my wiring, I had a lot of bleedoff coming from somewhere, and they didn't then either.

The manufacturer states a color temp of 4000k. Kind of a sweet spot between incandescent (~2700k) and flourescent (5000-5500k+) in my opinion. I prefer a bright(er) white(r) daylight style light. These are a bit "hotter" with less blue, but I like them pretty well.

I was originally planning to need 4 in a space, we took one out of the box held it up along the joist and decided on two. That space is lit up and 3 would have been crazy bright (maybe even too much). I was initially concerned about the 4000k also, but they are fine. I don't see too much blue red orange in them, they just look like white lights.

I agree, the color sprectrum and CR are just about right.

I'm replacing some shop lights I got from Walmart that used 2 T12 bulbs.

In which I used these bulbs:

They are too blue now. In my old garage I had unfinished dry wall with 15' ceilings.

My new garage has pure white painted walls with 9'-10' ceilings. It made them seem very BLUE.

The Feit are just about perfect. I could have maybe gone for 4100-4500 but these are just fine....especially for $19.99.

I will most likely pick up 8-10 more of the Costco Feit.

Does anyone know how long this company has been doing LED's?

I'm just wondering...because I have Feit spiral fluorescent's....& they are absolute Garbage!! The box claims 9 years / 10,000 hours & there's no way any of them lasted that long.

I'd like to try these new LED's, but if they are as crappy as their old spirals, I don't want to waste the money.

Alright I think I am ready to rock. I am no electrician so I am hoping someone knowledgeable can help me out here. BTW both receptacle are on one single circuit with one single switch. Should I have installed singles only? Should I have installed GFCI? I installed duals because I had some left over(new).

My idea is to use these receptacles for the shop lights only (for now) and maybe eventually add a reel of extension cord for power tools (not urgent I have plenty other GFCI outlets in garage.

I'm no electrician but I've heard of installing a single GFCI breaker to meet code instead of individual GFCI outlets.

Of course you will want to follow code......but the rule of thumb is you only need one (1) GFCI per circuit and it should always be the first one in-line. The idea is that it will trip if any others down the line get shorted.

Code here is you can have one GFCI to every three outlets behind it.

Code says receptacles out of normal reach do not need gfi. for what it is worth I have 27 receptacles in my garage and only one is a gfi . One is no a gfi from from the builder and one I installed. Mine are pretty high off the floor and my wife knows there is only one outlet she is allowed to use.

The bulbs can't be changed, there is no way to remove them from the fixture. At $20 a pop, if they last 5 years, I'll be happy.

I was considering taking one and making 8' of a single "tube" for my workbench light (under the upper cabinets). Sounds like that idea just went out the window.

Meh. For $20 you should buy one and give it a try. I've had one apart for mounting and you could probably do what you're suggesting with a little creativity.

Or buy THIS and scrounge up a 12v wall wart.

Something along those lines was actually my first thought. The really good stuff is not cheap though.

Not since the 2008 NEC has that been a thing. All outlets need to be GFCI.

Where is here? That's not the NEC.

That is here in South Carolina. I just built a 30x30 garage with an overhead bonus room. Inspector stated that I could use one GFCI to every 3 outlets.

NEC or not it was passed by the Inspectors here after completion.

Well the NEC doesn't have a limit so 3 would definitely pass, as would 13. :)

Picked up half a dozen of these earlier today for a quick, temporary upgrade to the basement shop. Here's a quick comparison of their output. Excuse the mess - in the middle of organizing and trying to make the space more functional.

First photo is what was there before - single lamp, bare bone fixtures with 100w incandescents.
Second is replacing one of the lights with the feit.
Third is adding a second light.
All photos taken with the exact same settings, on a tripod in the same location.

The results are dramatic, I mean I knew it was dark, but I've been getting by. Probably the best $120 I've spent down there, can't wait to get them all up.

I took some measurements before and after my upgrade. I have a 30Wx40D quonset hut with a 14' ridge. Old lights were 3 8' double bulb T12 CFLs running serially down the ridge. I walked around with a light meter and got anywhere from 40 lumens in the corner to 115 lumens right under the gap between 2 bulbs. Power draw is 1.09A (131W) per the sticker on the ballast, so 393W total.

I ran a line of 8 of these LED lights serially, 2' away and parallel to the old CFL lights. Plugged them in and walked around with the same meter. In the darkest corner I got 120 lumens and right under the lights I was reading 360 lumens. Power draw is 8x42 = 336W total.

Conclusion: I'm getting 3 times the light output for ~15% less power vs my T12 lights.

Then I went nuts and installed a series of 8 more on the other side of the ridge (about 4' from the first line). Now I get about 200 lumens in the corners and about 640 in the middle of the garage. Still "better" but I'm definitely at the point of diminishing returns.

What device are you using to measure lumens? Thanks in advance..

Yes, it's addicting. I've got 8 running now in my 20x37 and it's very well lit. Two more going in over the benches and I'll be all set.

You guys are freaking me out... I bought 20 for my ~25x30. That's based on ~100 lumens per square foot. Hopefully it won't be TOO bright :)

Went to Costco on friday and bought 20 single lights for $19.99 a piece. Fit them all in my Mini cooper. Can't wait to get these hung in my new garage.

G2G - which location? Oak Brook and North Riverside seem to be out of these, and after hanging a pair of them I've decided I need a couple more:sad:

I think you'll be fine. I have 9 running in my ~2 car (21x21ish) and I am anxious to get the last 4 up. 20 in a garage your size sounds perfect. Do consider zoning them, of course.

For the guys drilling through these to flush mount: are there any wires or circuitry in the way that can get damaged?
Not if you drill 'between the tubes'. If you drill through the raised ends, you may run into issues / need to take more care. I'd drill between the tubes myself. My friend has his mounted this way, it worked great.

What do you mean by 'zoning'? I was just doing to do them in rows, or sets. I was maybe going to do 4 rows of 5 (or 5 rows of 4, whatever), spaced evenly throughout the space. I have workbenches and such, but I really just need even light everywhere, I don't have set places to work on things, it constantly changes based on the project. I also do a lot of filming out there, so I need good light everywhere.

Has anyone tried a dimmer on these lights?

That's a good question. I don't recall seeing anything on the box noting that they were dimmable though. The newest one is like the third or fourth version that Costco has sold now.

It would be nice to dim them a bit sometimes.

I have a plug-in dimmer and I can try dimming them when I get home. The shipment just arrived today. I am also curious if they can be dimmed. It would be really nice to dim them down a little bit at times.

Thanks for the heads-up on these! I picked up 20 of these this past Friday (10 by me, 10 by my dad) for my 25x50 shop that had 18 4' T12 twin-tube fixtures.

One-for-one replaced all 18, then hung a 19th. Picked up another 7 today, as I'm going to add two more above the bay, and keep 6 as "spares" or for future expansion.

I am absolutely THRILLED with these things! Things appear to be a fair amount brighter, and the color/tone is great!

No more humming from the fluorescent ballasts, no more flaky/flickering tubes here and there, no more "it's cold in the shop, so certain fixtures don't want to turn on".

Upgrade was totally worth it!
