Shift, I forgot about my 406.---I'm right with you on the heft of those things.---Pretty good size and really finely machined tools.---The tolerances on the Reeds swivel-jaws is the litmus test for their overall quality of all their vises IMO.---Demo has the 407, and it is a hoss.

All I want for Christmas is the Reed #408 and #209.---Going out to all you good hearted Santa's out there.;)

My Wilton... dug it out and took some pictures last night. It was cold and I was tired so I really didn't do much investigating. I *thought* it is a 9400 but looking at the pictures it may be 8400. I didn't measure the jaws but I'm gonna say 4"

What's the best plan of attack for this one? I don't know much about vises...

Diesel, aint much atall wrong with that one.---Notice the near zero tolerances on the swivel-jaw and body.---Anyway it's a 406 and you don't see many of those popping up these days.---EBay lists right many 3s, 3 1/2s, 4s, a few 4 1/2s and a very few 5''s---CL on the other hand will advertise a few #406s but you can't afford them.

I got lucky on mine.---A GJ member who had not been a member long posted the 406 for sale to any GJ member that was interested for $300.00 which was right high 4 years ago.---But he had refurbished it and picked all the work out of it for me and it is in real good shape.---I couldn't pass.---Was surprised that it wasn't gone before I read the post and called.---I can't remember his avatar but I bet he would like to have it back now.---Until several 407s and a few 408s surface, your #406 will be in high demand.

72highboy, welcome to the C-0 double pinned club, and as an FYI KMCScott will have some replacement double pinned pipe jaws if you want replace yours, as soon as he makes his next run he will have some in stock, I sent him one of mine for dimensions.
BTW any chance of getting a shot at the underside of your base?

When did you ship them, making pipe jaws today. I can add the two holes later. 72highboy's C0 pipe jaws looks in great shape. Again thanks for the sample.

Mine look like they've never been used, will an extra set of measurements benefit you at all?

Like va already said, your 406 doesn't look bad at all. Yours has the flattened nose. Mine has the spherical meatball nose. Does anybody know what date that changeover occurred?

35:
Your 4 inch bullet does seem to have a heavy "patina" :)
Those are marked 8400 AND 9400. Two numbers on the same vise. One jaw tower is marked 8400 and the other 9400. Is it marked Chicago or Schiller Park? You know where to find the date code? (On the key under the round slide.)
You might want to check out the vise repair thread that drivesitfar started for rehab tips including rust removal and lubrication.

Yeah, she's neglected for sure...

I haven't opened it up to check for date code... and its definitely stamped with Schiller Park. I'll get more into it after the holidays.

I'll look for that thread, thanks for the heads up. :)

Shiftless- from my notes - the flat-nose style Reed with the adjustable front collar. - Patent applied for in Jan. 1936, granted in Aug. 1938. 2127008

Some few have surfaced that did not follow exactly - probably old stock discovered and being used up

VA/Shiftless Thanks, unfortunately there is a chuck out of the swivel base but I can fix that and the pin for the jaw was welded at some point so need to do some careful grinding then try and free it up.
Other than that just need to secure it to the base I have for it.

Finished up a Reed 203R had to build both the swivel lock and spindle handles. This should make a nice shop vise. I used 220 grit to clean up the jaws need to clean the smudges off a bit. Really like how you can control back lash with the split bolt, great design.

Anyone else also check "vice" when searching CL? Found a few good deals that way.
All the time [emoji4] definitely get some different results

Just found this one for sale as well, i don't have a swivel jaw yet....can anyone identify? I think it's weird it has no markings.. That can't be the original swivel pin can it?

For the locking swivel nut I used 3/8 round stock and threaded two 3/8 nuts ground and sanded to fit. For the swivel handle I Used 1/2 inch round stock and two 1 inch cast iron balls tapped and thread sanded and polished.

72: it's a Prentiss and if you get us the jaw width I (we'll) will give you a model #.

that bolt is definitely original to the vise. otherwise other than the ordinary lack of use of the swivel jaw that vise is in great shape.

nice find on the Wilton C0 and you did fine on the purchase price even if you are going to set it on a shelf.

CA: you have skills sir and thank for showing us how you made that handle over on the vise repair 101 thread. what's next?

ALL: hope you all have plans to make 2017 even better than 2016 and hoping you all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS. it's been fun sharing my vice for vises with all of you this year.

A few pages back there was a discussion on the similar combo vises from Parker and Oswego. This one appears to be at least 6" and heavier reinforcing than the others I have seen.
The use of a name ( Ontario ) instead of a number is kind of unique also. I have a Yost that was named "The Gem" I bet it was a through the bench swiveler originally.
I saw it on CL and thought it was interesting

Heard back from the seller, Prentiss 4" jaw..

I know I know, but i thought I heard of some swivel pins also having a threaded section at the end, would only make sense to have a hex..

72 looks like it says something right behind the swivel. My guess would be Prentiss.
I was looking up Prentiss' and they seem to all have writing on the side, would this vise be date stamped anywhere?

Hey Getridaone
if you still have your Flexi vise could you please get the dimensions of the badge. I'm currently trying to restore mine and it was missing the badge and I really would like to make a new one. Or if someone else knows the measurements please post up.

MAC: I AGREE that's TMI. :D:D

72: probably a Prentiss 19.5 and behind the swivel jaw it should say Prentiss and maybe 19.5. it was made probably in the 1920's and yes many many Prentiss and other brands didn't put their names cast on the sides. i know they sold to some companies that put them in a box with that companie's name on them and i think Wilton might have started the Stickers like Snap on, John Deere and other company names on their vises, but i'm sure that there was somebody else that Wilton got the idea from just like they copied the YORK vices for their bullet line.

in the almost 100 years yes an owner could have threaded the hole and put a hex in it, but more likely the bolt was just there because the original pin was lost or not passed on with the vise.

Wow. Lots of love for Reed.

I very much like my Hollands 26; I'm told they are similar to Reed.

Seller of the Craftsman wants to hold off until after the holidays. Sent the seller of the Reed a message.

I am sure this has been asked, but can I get some recommendations for magnetic soft jaws for my Reed 204R vise, please?

It is 2 1/2" long. 1/2" high. Letters are 1/4" high. The F & L got damaged

Thank you very much sir. I'm not sure if I'm going to go with the raised lettering but will definitely stick with the factory dimensions.

Just picked up this 2.5" Athol today. Pd 60. Gotta fix the swivel.

Guy also had a perfect Rock Island 577 but wanted 399 for it. I may offer him 275. It was really sweet!
