Varn is the name of a rubber rejuvenator/protectant

EDIT: turns out Varn is pretty specialty (I had gotten some from work years ago), but there are many rubber rejuvenators out there

I'm headed to Poland for work in two weeks. Can you say FPU Bison?

Bulletpruf

If you are seeking Bisons in the wild, beware! They are cunning, devious and crafty creatures.

During this time of year, they are known do disguise themselves as REINDEER!

JKB

I've restored many vises and several Bison FPU's and have to say they are one of my favorites vises, while unconventional they are very solid and the metal used in the casting is very tough, much tougher than Wiltons as I was restoring two at the same time. Excellent vises to use.

The jaw supports are surfaced hardened and cleaning up the other areas were a total chore but at the same time not brittle. These vises are impressive with slide gibs and backlash adjustments. Excellent vises to use.

I hope you're able to find some good ones to bring home.

Happy holidays

Santa has been good to me this year. Lots of new vises. This one is on the tree.
If you have one on the tree or under the tree post it up here!

Isn't it funny how something like a vise brings together total strangers who become friends on here.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Hope all had a blessed new year.

I got this tree ornament today from my good friend in Kansas, Granddaughter will like placing this on our 12 foot tree since she is in charge of decorations. She seen my baby jaws and made a ornament out of a set too.

Grand Son is enjoying this Prentiss, loves squishing pop cans but not on this one.

I have the Reed 109 with in 1 inch of coming apart. Over three feet in it's stretched position. I sit back and really enjoying this repair. This is quite a vise. These new Jaws will be 2-1/2 inchs tall. Most grip I have seen so far. Gonna be fun serrating this set.

Have a great Christmas Vise fans.

Yep, I will repair that next. It split .04 at it widest point. Actually not to bad, I have seen much worse. Gonna break out my porta power after Christmas and get it apart.

Did you ever fit the Parker jaws I made you a couple years ago? Just thought about it reading your post.

Thanks all. I haven't weighed all the pieces yet. The stand isn't welded at all yet either. I sliced a section of pipe into 3 pieces which will go around the ibeam. My hope is that the stand will be bottom heavy enough and stable to not have to bolt down. I can always add weight under the sprocket and fill the stand 1/3 of the way wth sand. 96182e562452cf5a8c2e4302f478c375.jpg

Where does one find a sprocket like that?

Are any parts interchangeable between monarch and prentiss mainly asking about the vice nut on my monarch 224 it's proving to be difficult to find. If all else fails I'm just gonna grind the previous repair out and full pen it with a tig

MOOR: my guess is if you can find a big Prentiss' vise nut that it might fit since Monarch was made by them, but when i had 2 6 inch vises (monarch and prentiss) i never thought to give that a try.

another option is to find a screw and vise nut from a broken Prentiss and maybe the pair would fit in your Monarch's frame. not sure, but thought i'd throw out my 2 cents.

Merry Christmas to all my friends that have a vice for VISES (VICES).

cheers

Those little Craftsman ornaments are really hard to find. They must not have sold well 10 years ago.

Kevin - I really like a tall tree. The little jaws look so cool. Those kids will remember that.

Next year I'm going to put a Reed 109 on a rotating stand and clamp the Christmas tree in it. That would be a sight.
Here is my favorite Christmas tree

Bagged, thats just great! Find yourself an 8" vise when you are in India and ship it to me!

Thanks. Haha. I don't even want to know how expensive shipping would be.

Bagged:

Beautiful work

Is that simply BLO over a surface cleaned with a wire wheel?

Thanks shiftless. Just wire wheeled. Haven't had time to do anything else yet.

Dang that thing is utilitarian but screams look at me function and design love it.

Thanks

Just beautiful. Those 3 curved plates you want to weld on to the I beam could look pretty cool. I find as it is with the I beam and no colors that stand out, it is a very raw/naked beauty.

My vote for best pic of 2016

Thanks. I do like how it looks in the raw as well.

Where does one find a sprocket like that?

I wanted one so I found one on eBay.

Bags, what type of welder do you have. Nice stand. The sprockets make a nice base. Show a picture when you get it all welded if you think of it.

Thanks. I just have a Lincoln 175 mig. It has done me well for what I do. I wish I had the extra cash to justify getting a small tig. One day I'll upgrade.

That vise ornament is what I need next year for our tree.

Looking great Bagged

I found two at the local scrap yard earlier this year and bought them to make a vise stand as well, but haven't done anything with them yet. I think I paid about $100 for the two of them.

I've got pretty much all the same components set aside....I-beam etc. I managed to get two sprockets that are 105lbs each, so I'm going to stack them and weld them together. I figure with the I-beam, sprockets, top plate etc it will be 300lbs before adding the vise.

You can tell they were really worn out because the teeth are so thin and sharp....totally gone.

I've had a Reed 404R for about 30 years and just found out that it has a swiveling rear jaw :lol_hitti but can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the pin. Any suggestions on how to do this without destroying the pin?

Steve: any chance you might be able to take a few pictures of your reed 404 and post some here? yes you have a great vise and most likely even when you get the pin out your swiveling jaw will still be rusted in it's position so a little more work to get that loose too will follow.

i think the last post on the Vise Repair 101 thread was talking about a stuck pin, but there is help all over that thread on how to remove them. i think CA probably posted the link to that thread in his post and this thread has some information.

the best way to remove pins are from below upwards so take out the dynamic jaw and see if you can maybe get a small bolt up in the bottom of the hole to push it up and out. or ask questions over on the vise repair 101 thread with pictures and the guys will help you there if they see it.

ALL: hope you all had a great Christmas and other than gaining a few pounds i'm heading to the in laws for the third day in a row of Christmas meals, but might have a vise to look at near their place to post.

Merry Christmas to you too, nothing wrong getting another good meal. Keep up the good work and enjoy.

I'm too keeping the vise hunt up today and on my way to an estate sale with a large garage full of tools.

So we all know what a Reed 108 goes for, what are your thoughts on an older 107 with 3 hole base and no replaceable jaws? Great condition.

TRI: As always value is a hard thing to nail down especially on somewhat rare and large vises. i'd say your 107 wouldn't be a common vise, but wouldn't sell for quite as much as your C3 did if that helps. i know i'd pay a few Benji's for a 107 cause it would be my biggest vise, but until i add on to our garage or move i don't NEED IT.

Mac: take pictures even if you don't buy everything if you have time. good luck and thanks for the well wishes.

Obviously it depends on the exact condition, and a lot of that will be the jaws, but I would expect to pay several hundred dollars for one....maybe somewhere between $200 and $500.

Trijeff - A reed 107 will bring at least $600-800 all day long. I have been watching a lot of stuff sell lately at auctions and other places and all these old blacksmith vises are really high. A reed 107 is a hard one to find anyway. I've only ran across two in all my hunting. They were an odd size. If it is nice you butter get it if it is a deal.

SteveL, don't feel bad about not knowing about the swivel jaw. A lot of people don't know what that is on there for.---I bought the nice, 6'', 124 lb., Rock Island #54 off of a mechanic who thought that you pulled the pin to oil the slide.---He had two and would sell either one.---The other was a smaller Charles Parker swivel jaw, and not in as good a shape, so I chose the Rock.---$150.00 and 100 miles, round trip, it found a new home.---I wanted both but he wouldn't sell both.---I can't remember the # on the Parker.---But I didn't try to deceive, I told him what the swivel jaw was for, but he was sure he was right.---Who am I to argue.

Notice the close tolerances between the swivel jaw and the body.---Minus the paint and the crud, it's almost as precise as the Reeds.---Now that's saying something.

I found this an old Mill and steam supply catalog. I had a chance to buy one of these post vises this summer but he wanted $500 so I passed. It has teeth on the back for quick adjustment.

Here are a few pics of the Reed 404R that Ive had for more than 30 years. No idea of how old it it but it was used in a repair shop of a commercial furniture dealership that our family owned. Was fortunate enough to sneak it out before we closed up the shop in the late '80s. Started the process of getting the pin out with PB Blaster so I can use the swivel feature. Any way to estimate how old it is? Thanks for all the help.

While I'm at it, I thought I would post some pics of a couple of woodworking vises that I restored. Made the handles out of cherry and brass. Picked both of these up from a local guy for around $30 if I remember correctly.

Will try to take pics of the other vises around the shop later.

That one is pretty clean if you pull the slide out and take the swivel base off you could probably drive the pin out from the bottom use a little kroil on the pin before hand.
