Wow, look at you guys, with your lists and stuff.

Wish I was that organized. My DBE collection is getting big enough that I should think about making one to avoid buying duplicates.

Of course, the duplicates are turning up variations I would never noticed if I had a list to avoid buying duplicates...

Many MANY years ago, I used to keep a 3x5 card with a drawn grid in it, and was checking off on getting a "complete" set of sockets (any really good brand as that was what I started with from my dad's hodge podge of sockets).

I had the sizes across the top, the drive sizes & style (reg, deep impact...) and carried it for years while hitting the Fleamarket and the odd garage sale. I eventually updated it for brand codes and would look for upgrades.

These days if its a good brand and a good deal, I just buy it. Some upgrade my "daily users": and some just get "stocked" or placed where I use that size/tool a lot (applies to other tools as well) I've made up a second set of "road tools" since my DD is 30 yeas old and while I trust it, its still 30 years old and "stuff" happens... That set had those sizes and special types I know I need and is not focused on "having everything"

Some few brands/models I've gotten more serious about getting a "set" (Long C craftsman I started to go Proto for all daily use wrenches, and may still for SAE - I have a full set of SO metric wrenches now...)

So bottom line is I no longer carry a list of any description. If I fill in "holes" and make a set, fine. I'm generally not too obsessive about it. I HAVE completed a number of sets, and if I acquire extras, that's OK.

As to going yardsailing or even CL today; I got nuthin... :dunno: Having a bit of "withdrawal" here... I need to :3gears:

Just got back from an auction that included some really good tools. The house is full of toddlers on a playdate. My BIL is MIA. I'm now hiding in my room watching the Liverpool/ManCity match. The mancave isn't far enough away.

I didn't have high hopes for my chances at the auction. The place was packed. I almost missed the beginning. The address for the hall doesn't exist where it's supposed to be. The address they gave is on RT1, but the actual location is on the RT1-bypass. It took me 30min to find it and that was only after I gave up and tried an alternate way to get home.

The auctioneer was starting everything high, and then when he came down to get bids, you were mostly bidding against the assistants that were holding the items up. One of them ended up winning about a third of the lots. Why bother having an auction if the employees are going to buy everything anyway. Isn't that a conflict of interest ? :tantrum2: :fawk:

Yea, I'm still a bit annoyed. It was a complete waste of time bothering to leave the house this morning.

I bid on a few items, but within two or three bids they were overpriced.
Needless to say, I guess I'm done for the year.

ring man around here state b4 bidding starts when they're interested usually by opening bid. if theres 2 much of it the crowd leaves. all in all theres hardly any of it. at estate auction, if family wants in the crowd usually bows out.

I get that the employees may be interested in items in the auction, but if they're going to bid they should at least step back with the rest of the crowd, not stand there holding the item while they look you in the eye and bid against you. Ideally they wouldn't bid at all while wearing the auction company's uniform. It gets confusing, are they acknowledging a bid from the crowd or making a bid on their own ? I'm not bothered with not winning anything at the auction, that's the game. The point is that the whole thing rubbed me the wrong way.

Stopped at a moving sale yesterday, sadly no tools. Scooped up these pile of lanterns for $22. Will get them running and flip them.

Spotted at local indoor flea market scouting expedition today. Probably head back tomorrow to consummate, but thought I'd post now to contribute toward post record.
$200 no.6 bear trap. I don't need one, but it's still very cool.
Update: I passed on this.

$25 Cman wood vise. Seriously considering, though it's pretty much identical to a noname I already have on my bench.
Update: returned and picked it up for $20.
And while researching it, discovered my "noname" is probably a Craftsman as well, hiding under a coat of rattlecan red.

And a $12 No.9 Disston rip saw circa 1880. At first glance, I dismissed it as a (cheap and common) No.7, but the handle is made from apple, not beech, and the medallion is a full 1", not 13/16". The handle is obviously missing the lower portion, which is a shame, but considering the relative rarity of this model, worth the effort to reproduce. There's still a glue-shadow and a bit of paper where there was a crescent-shaped sticker around the medallion.
Probably buy it tomorrow, though I think it's overpriced, because repairing the handle should not be too hard, and everything else is good. Plus, among my collection of 50+ handsaws, I don't own this model - yet.
Update: A closer look revealed a broken tooth and more damage to the handle than I originally noticed (both horns chipped/mashed, and an along-the-grain split on the reverse cheek. After a pleasant negotiation with the vendor about condition, I paid $8, still 2-3 times what I would offer for for a more common model.

Hit a couple of flea markets for the first time in ages here.
First stop, a Stanley clamp on 90 deg vise, a near little clamp on, looks like it says defiance 1209, a Utica adjustable and a CM right angle adjustable. I'm trying to build a set of these type in the Diamond brand, never knew CM made them. A handful of wood chisels

Jake: you've been a great host for the garage thread and a great member of GJ. thanks again for hosting it.

sorry to hear about the auction and it's been years since i've been to any in person.

ALL: great finds guys and love the enthusiasm this thread shows in the middle of winter.

i had an hour to pick up a few things today.

not sure what this 10 section metal cabinet was used for originally, but i might have a place for it to fill it up with small stuff. drawers are 18 inches long and maybe 2.5-3 inches wide and 6 drawers per section.

also picked up a 1/2 Hp Dayton drill with bits, 1/4 inch Plvmb & 1/2 inch long C ratchets and 4 old pickle jars i'll make my ice tea in.

Too bad I was out of town for that one, Jake.

But I did get two eBay deliveries in for the ol' DBE wrench collection. Here they are:

0b2a62949ac24bbe817bb6386c61ec93.jpg

The top two were actually part of my GJ Secret Santa gift, a big 1939 Bluepoint and an Ampco copper-beryllium. Next was a rare variety of striped Blackhawk deep offset wrench. If any of you have any of these for sale or trade, shoot me a PM. Next, a pair of Indestro-made Westlines, a 1930's Chrome X Quality, three more Indestro-made wrenches, and finally a pair of Fairmont offsets, same size but from two different eras. More details as usual on the DBE thread.

Booyah! Onward to the record!

If you mean the record as far as how many DBE's you have let me know when you are ready for my help LOL.

Picked up off of fb. I've been wanting one for a display I'm putting together and it's a plus being a Ford model. Probably paid too much at $80.00 bucks but I'll call it my late Christmas present to me! Snap-on mini!

Ooh I like that! How big is that?

Sometimes you get a good deal and sometimes you screw up. I stopped by a place selling antiques and stuff. I spied this Reed 203 1/2R and the Wilton 9350. The Reed is stuck closed and will be a project. The Wilton looked OK, I unscrewed it about an inch and the teeth on the jaws looked good and no obvious damage. I was in a hurry to make it to a hospital appointment so I made what I thought was a decent deal.

Then I got home and unscrewed the Wilton the rest of the way

Plus the rest of the slide is stuck inside the main body.

Now I need some beer, or two or three... :scared::beer2:

BB, I'm not sure if green are or not. I know there was some rare red handle that sold for big bucks on eBay. Now I'll have to go reread the Diamond thread:lol_hitti.

On a brighter note a friend of mine bought a trailer that had an old piece of farm equipment sitting on it (almost 10 feet wide) on it that was too wide to go down the road. If I helped him get it off I could have it for scrap or what ever. I think it was a drag of some kind. It is made of mostly big steel angle and was bolted together, not welded. I should be able to use the steel for some of my projects. I am only 4 blocks from where the trailer was so we drove it slowly to my place and stuck it underneath my hoist. We took several pieces off and hoisted the rest of the trailer so he could drive it out and away.

ALRIGHT 7,188 posts, a new record for the garage sale yearly thread! On to 2017!

Well BB, by my calculations, your post made it to the goal, I threw one in for extra point.
Now, how far can we go?:dunno:

2014 had 7,169 posts during the year and got up to 7,187 in the first few days of 2015 so we are well ahead already!

When I went out to the store today I swung by the market to wish the guys a Happy New Year. There were literally 5 vendors braving the cold. One guy kept talking real loud. Maybe he thought he could yell the cold away :dunno:

Big score anyhow, lol. I grabbed this little Vulcan 1/4 drive #1 Phillips socket for 50 cents.

Nice find, 3bay. We'll be watching for your 2017 opening post!

Your counting was better than mine, bluebolt. Too bad about the Wilton--I how it didn't set you back to much. It's that repairable, I wonder.

By my counting, this is the post that puts the 2016 thread ahead.
I decided to include the posts that were made in the new year, 1) to give use a bigger goal to achieve, and 2) because I was too lazy to count back and do the math to the last actual post in 2014.

Each year there are spillover posts into the next year, some because they're posting late on finds from the previous year, some are responses to posts on that thread, and a few are from people who don't realize there's a new thread each year or can't find it.

Hopefully, we can start right in on the new thread once it gets started and avoid confusing the post count. :lol_hitti

Well done guys(gals). :rocker:

Well, almost ended the year with a bang. Saw a posting on CL for a really nice Wilton 5 inch bullet for $100. Posting had been up for only 2 hours. Emailed the guy, & he emailed me back 15 minutes later that it had been sold. Just as well, I've been downsizing quite a bit the last few weeks, and it just so happens I sold my 5 and 3.5 inch bullets yesterday. Oh well, there's always next year. Happy new year everyone!

I paid $100 for both vises. I was figuring $30 on the stuck Reed and $70 for the Wilton.

My outlook on this broken Wilton is I have made some real good vise scores this year and although I overpaid for this Wilton my good scores outweigh it by far.

$300 for 7 vises (2 Wilton C-1s, 2 Wilton turret vises, a Versa Vise, a NOS in the box Starrett Athol 3 1/2" swivel base vise and an Erie Tool Works 2 1/2" combo vise). I sold the Starrett and one of the turret vises and made all my money back and still have the other 5 vises.

$25 for a nice 2" Wilton baby bullet

$35 for a decent Columbian 203 1/2 combo vise

$30 for another Versa Vise

There's a few more vises I scored this year but you get my point.

Congrats on breaking the record guys. we still have one milestone that seems to elude us: the "one page a day average" is still a tiny bit short. Every year I think (about August) "maybe this year" and every year the year end slow down gets us.

CB: that CL 910 is a GREAT find! there is a sliding adjuster for tension on the bottom arm that is the secret to this type of one handed grip. I have two pair. One I bought new, and once I got the thing to grip tight I was sold!

Their only weak point in my opinion is the little plastic grip. Its easily broken. I broke mine, and re-glued it, then wrapped it in fine steel wire, and painted over that with nail polish to keep the wire in place. Its been "repainted" once after twenty years of use. so it worked out well.

ps: Are we doing the new start at midnight? and if so, Eastern or Left coast Midnight?

BB I have one 8" green handle that the jaws open extra wide on. I know a few of these went ballistic price wise on Eprey, but that is not the norm...

Anyway, my 8" is marked "S8 WIDE OPEN1-1/8" on the jaws. We used to take the thumb gear out and use a dremel to carve one more tooth on the jaw gear rack to allow 12" adjustable wrenches to do this. but then the jaw will also screw right out...

Adding to our end of year post count. The first two pics are stuff from a "get out of the house for a while" trip a few weeks ago. Total for the two pics was $18. The nasty looking screwdriver handle will become a hand held drill chuck holder. The SK 40970 was stuck, but after a complete teardown and reassembly works just as it should. A couple of items ended up in Christmas stockings, including the Craftsman bottle opener (which looked new). 3 of the wrenches were cleaned and polished and went to nephews for their toolboxes. They actually work on stuff which is great.

A couple of the items could be up for adoption (Bonney, Vlchek, long C craftsman wrenches) if anyone is interested.

The multi-SK item pic was part of my Christmas haul from my very diligent wife. It completes a set of SK metric flares, all but one of a set of DOEs and my SK DBEs.

The VIM HBR5 is a great mini-ratchet and I highly recommend it to anybody needing such a small ratchet.

Happy new year everybody!

Ooh I like that! How big is that?

BB It's just a lil guy. Going to go in my mini display. Vise's, anvils and such. Probably put a small set of crown logo ignition wrench's in it and a few other small items. I'm just playing around with it simply cause I really enjoy looking at it. My girls think I lost it displaying old tools in my dining room :eyecrazy: I just can't think of anything else I'd rather look at than some great old tools!

sorry about the sideways photos. sometimes they are perfect and sometimes not so much :dunno:
