New family member in the shop today. I really like these old Yorky boxes. Also a bunch of wrenches to add to the pile.

Here is a toolbox my dad has had since the 70s. Still in decent condition. Its finally been retired from regular duty and will be used for a small parts cabinet. Even after some digging he was able to find the original key!

Beautiful box. So glad to hear this was passed on to a family member!

So where would I find period-correct key blank for my 12-72 Craftsman chest?

https://www.easykeys.com

https://www.easykeys.com/Craftsman.aspx

I've never bought Craftsman keys from them, but I did order keys for my Kennedy boxes. I got the number off the locks, inside the toolbox. I got to keep my original locks, which is what I wanted. Note, these are cut, working keys, not key blanks.

If you just want the blanks...
https://www.easykeys.com/Craftsman.aspx?ForceTab=Key_Blanks

Browse the manufacturer list - I see Waterloo is listed.

This is not an ad, I'm not part of this company, except that I'm a customer.

Yes it did. I bought it. I am going to scan it in and try and make some decals from it. If I decide to sell it, I'll let you know. The pin holes are not in the right spot for my chest.
Glad you got it as it's now in the GJ family.

Picked up a couple of KRA-30A boxes with KTA-4 trays a couple of weeks ago. Plan to use them for my kids tool sets as I build them. It will give them something good to load up and take to college with them.

Scored this today. Can't wait to get it home. Not sure if it's a powrkraft model or not. I think this was just labeled with the monkey wards logo.
Drawer liners made from the original box. Price sticker almost in tact. Can't wait to load it up with my old tools

I just acquired a 1988' MAC mb9100 top box and want to do some restoration on the unit. Is anyone familiar with how to remove the screws holding the side handles on? I have not run into a screw head like this before. Its basically cut in the shape of an X with the flat part positioned that a flat head screwdriver is able to tighten the screws but really has no flat surface to grab to unscrew them.

those are one way fasteners. basically designed to not be removed. there is a tool made but it doesnt work very well.

cut a slit in it with a grinder and remove with a flat head screwdriver, or weld a bolt onto it and then uncscrew it from the new bolt.

may be bad advise, but its the only way ive removed them.

Also, I believe that the previous owner for some reason modified the piano hinge that attaches the lid to the box. The lid side is fine and pristine. the side that would attach to the box however looks like it has been moved and sloppily tacked to the rear/exterior of the box. I believe this side should actually be attached inside the box underneath the guard that contains the locking mechanism. The hinge does have ten holes that match up to the flange located here. My question is can someone confirm this to be true and if so what would be the proper way to connect this.

Here is a toolbox I picked up on Friday that I'm pretty excited about. It's a round top with the cantilever trays. I already started stripping the paint from it.

Thanks for the kind comments. Zee- your box thread is a inspiration. This should be a fun project for me for the next few months. I plan to fill it up with a complete set of 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 in. BE socket set I picked up last fall.

I have a couple of those boxes(one with the swing out trays and the other with a lift out tray) and would warn you not to overload the uppermost trays as the hinges are very prone to bending. The one I got had been overloaded and straightening the hinges was difficult so as to ensure smooth operation. I think they refer to these as the "mailbox" models.

Picked this up last weekend at the local indoor fleas, was marked at $12 but I talked down to $8. It's heavy for it's size, I couldn't pass it up just because of how solid it feels when you pick it up on the end handles. There's a little surface corrosion on the bottom, but not bad. The overall rest of the box had light surface rust which the previous owner felt needed a quick covering from 153 different shades of spray-bombed paint (the cheapest the Quik-E-Mart had) plus a top coat of primer. I think he got them backwards, but what do I know? The three drawers are about as far from ball-bearing smooth as can be, and the front lock mechanism has been cut off the box completely, so there's no way to close this securely, or even latch it.

So why buy it, you ask? I guess I like a challenge, and this box was calling my name. I'm going to see how good I can polish this turd, I might even get it respectable enough to keep.

On a different note, though, does anyone have any idea who made this? There is no trace of a badge, nameplate, stamping, or anything that would say who it was made by. It's about 20 inches in width, and 12 inches high.

So there is no latch plate on the bottom front rail? That shouldn't be too hard to remedy. A cylinder lock is easy.

As to Mfg, I've no clue. I can't recall seeing a top lid quite like that. It does have a certain cool factor. Is it std 12 deep front to back and 26 wide?

There is a latch plate, it's been buggered good, and yes the cylinder lock is missing, like you said easy fix. It is about 12 deep and maybe a bit shy of 26 inches wide, more like 20 or 22 inches.

Wondering if anybody else sees what seems to be a oval badge?

2f4a51399cb9f3579934eda46ae7419f.jpg

Bottom drawer right of handle.

Nope. That, my friend, is a paint run, the former owner laid it on thick with the spray bomb, and he was painting the drawers upside down, so what looks like the top of an oval-shaped badge is actually an inverted paint blob.

But good eye!

Well after you get an appropriate cylinder lock with a hook pawl, its not a terribly difficult job to make and add a latch plate, do you have access to a spot welder? that or maybe braze one on inside before you paint?

Bottom drawer right of handle.

Take some simple green or if that doesn't work try lacquer thinner and carefully rub the spot and see if a decal appears or if it truly a paint run.

LOL, I guess that what happens when using your phone for GJ. I click on picture and scroll over to look at pulls and "paint blob" kinda stood out. It would be wrong location for badge I thought either badge I thought it was.

Yeah, got to love "spray bomb" paint jobs. I saw this on CL. Ad titled it a Snap On but clearly a Craftsman. I guess stickers made it a Snap On. LOL

One is an accident, two starts to look like a pattern, but three just appears intentional. It started with a KRA-429B picked up in a package deal. I was thinking to sell it when I fell into a KRA-377D for a song. At that point I couldn't shake the idea of finding a matching-vintage top chest to make a set. I wasn't about paying the auction site price, but two years of CL monitoring yielded nada. Until last week, when I found a dirty but straight, original paint KRA-59B. It should clean up nicely. I didn't steal it, but the other two were such a bargain that I'm under $300 for the set. Patience pays.
