Anyone know about C. A. Herriman vises? This is a number 15 I've had sitting in my shop for years. It's older than I am I think.
I had it clamped to the underside of a bench just to keep it off the floor and out of the way. Cold as balls today and I reached for something, hit the handle, and it dropped to the floor. No damage-only a foot or so drop. Of course as I reached to catch it I smashed my finger on the edge of a piece of scrap steel and knocked the skin off. Barely a week goes by and a healing wound is replaced by a new one. 1770732692d1dcf846f7120dd77b4bf3.jpg9f7e5a97e925d137ba1dab5af180f5b2.jpg

I've not run into a CA Herriman WW vise before, but checked internet and see that they were made in Chicago and that the No. 15 weighs 36lbs with 4"x 8" surface plate jaws which open to 12.5"

Does this model have a quick release feature to it?

I think you just chose the color of red to paint that vise!

Yes it has quick release. I don't do any woodworking but I got this vise for nothing. I'm hoping to find some usefulness for it in metal fabrication? Right now I'm very mad at it so I put it in time out. [emoji16]

Bought this Columbian 204 1/2 today. It is missing pipe jaws. Would love to find a set or get ahold of drawings with measurements.

Perfect candidate for the ****** tank.

I had to look up "lol_hitti". I Google this and found out it is the smiley for hitting??? Weird thing is the results came from only two web sites. This one and a nurses web site/forum. WTF? [emoji2]

Might be able to help you. Give me your jaw height and thickness in a PM and I'll design a pipe jaw for you and send you the geometry in Acad format. Look at my sketch to see how I cut the pipe jaws. I set the jaws up at 14 degrees and pick up a corner with a indicator and a 1/2 inch roll pin. I have found this method covers most teeth on pipe jaws. I use the end mills corner for the teeth.

Received another baby Wilti today I could not pass up and I was really surprised to see how clean this thing is for something older than me, not abused at all,
Question for the hive; do I clean up and repaint or clean up and leave original finish, decal remnants, and patina

Of course keeping with my requirement of collecting only Chi town based Wiltis, even the power arm is from the Chi town plant

BTW: the seller of this one has one more, not quite as clean as this one, but pretty darn close w/another power arm and same vintage too, If anyone wants a clean older baby w/ power arm, PM me, that way, I won't be tempted to buy it too...

So I realize that a lot of the vises I have were given to me or I found them when responding to something else on Craigslist. Going for a belt grinder I came home with the swivel jaw carriage makers vise. When I got the Reed posted above I actually was buying some metal shelves (real heavy duty ones) found out the guy was moving, offered thirty for the vise and it came home with me. This 3 1/2" Chas Parker was given to me (along with many other tools) in exchange for helping to clean out a basement. This is as it came to me.

I grew up in the neighborhood and saw the house was for sale, as a kid I knew the owner had a lot of tools 'cause I saw them. But many years had passed. The broker was the same one that sold my dads house so I asked him if he knew what became of the tools. He said they were still there. I contacted the daughter, we were friends as young kids but hadn't kept in touch. Her father died in 1987 with a basement FULL of tools. It was like opening a time capsule. Nothing had been used in thirty years.

Boatman - That Parker Vise looks like it is in very nice shape and should clean up well.

Cajun - I would personally restore the baby Wilton to better than its original glory.

I wouldn't paint that one, but I would do something to keep it from getting rusty.

Guys, keep them coming, some beauties out there. Here's one I found on CL Milwaukee. It Looks at a glance it a Wards typical anvil vise but in further inspection I notice that the pipe jaws are actually held in by screws and also the top screws ae replicable. Its clean!! Maybe she will ship.

First post sorry if I'm in the wrong section. I just found this cool vice in my sisters basement and will be mounting it to the bench in my garage as soon as I can. Does anyone know how old it is or if it would have originally had a pivot base. Thank you in advance for any info you may be able to provide me.

Looks like 60's vintage Schiller Park model, and date should be on the slide. Can't tell if it was ever a swivel base version, but doesn't matter. What does matter is that that the front jaw looks upside down and not aligned to its mate. Fix that, paint it Rustoleum Verde Green, and good to go for another 50 years....

Unscrew the slide all the way, pull it out, look at the flat bar that runs along the bottom, and there should be a date code.

They came as both fixed base, and swivel base, with no other difference, so there's no way of knowing for sure.

Recently bought this tiny (3,5 x 6 inch) Record folder.
I've been told it's from 1937.
Interesting to see Record made 7 and 8"-ers. I don't think I've ever seen one.
The 8" with swivel base costed 42,35 Dutch guilders (fl), which would be 875,60 euros ($ 924,55) nowadays.
Cheers !

Gert: i think our English gents have a few of those big Records. Fretters, Dutch and CW should have at least one and maybe they all have one and maybe 2 of them. nice book find!!

IPC: you found a keeper and guessing late 50's early 60's for the date stamp on the bottom of the dynamic jaw shows up when you unscrew it out all the way. don't let it fall and once you take the jaws off and clean them up i bet they will fit back nicely with Gman's tip if the screws haven't been damaged.

also welcome to GJ.

here's a thread that has more than a few Wilton restorations if you might need some help and have some time to read about what other members do.

It can only be original once. There are too many of these things being repainted, in my humble opinion. Clean it up and keep it all original as a true survivor.

I second that.
Scrub with diluted Simple Green or equivalent, let it thoroughly dry, and rub on a few coats of Boiled Linseed Oil (known here as BLO)

If you don't like the way it turns out, just mail it to me and I will tweak it a bit and return it to you sometime maybe later. :D

I went on a pick today. The guy had 2 vises he said aren't for sale (yet). First one was a
6" fpu he say he bought new in the 70's If his kid doesn't want it he will call me. Second is a parker 4x. Looked liked 5 1/2" with a cracked slide. Not much info on the 4x out there. The guy is a scrapper these days so I will butter him up with scrap in hopes of getting a vise.

That Parker sounds great providing the crack isn't really bad. Probably 100 years old or a bit more.

Thanks Shift The crack looks bad but, if the price is right it is still in great working condition. Catalyze info is all I found as well.

Back in the early days of this thread, he was very much like VA, Zoomie, and Get of today; very knowledgeable and had a good collection of vises. I hope he is doing alright, stopped posting at some point and never heard from since.

BTW Shiftless, maybe you were already aware, or maybe not, but you can click on any post number on the upper right corner of a post, like your post which is 50893 and it will bring it up on its own page, with its own address which you can use as a link, like this...
