Are you friends with kmscott? I remember Kevin posting a pic that looked quite a bit like this one. Can't recall exactly but it was a friend of his or someone he visited....like down in Texas?

Yes I'm good friends with Kevin. What an outstanding talent he Is! And another great individual! Kevin is a perfectionist and man he is good with that metal!

Nothing wrong with this picture, big iron as wallpaper, I like your decorator. Some familiar stuff but also see lots of unique big boys in this pic. Feel free to add comments on any of these beauties.

C'mon, you gotta have a story for this little guy!

I hate to be boring about this one but the story isn't all that exciting. The exciting part about it is that I own it. Let me start by telling you that I do extensive research about vise and blacksmithing tools. That said I have looked and looked and asked and asked and can tell you nothing about this little vise or what it's purpose is.
I was in Weatherford, TX and stopped to see an old friend Dave, owner of Daves Stove Shop, he had this vise for sale $12 "Duck Bill Vise" the sticker said. I picked it up and made a B line for the register and paid for that sucker. Said good bye to Dave and got in my truck and literally started singing the "look at what I got song" and high 5ing myself. Just excited as could be. I'd ever and have never seen anything like it. If anyone know what it is exactly I'd love to learn more about it.

I don't know if Demo is about your age but did he or you, get the other into collecting vises...or you guys met at an auction bidding on the same vise!!!...and became friends?

Yes Demo and I are about the same age. I'm 38 and he is 46 or 47 (today actually) if I remember correctly.

Demo how old are you?

We met on "farmersonly.com" Ha! Just kidding! We were actually introduced by another member of GJ. I'm not sure what his call sign is but it's Tom Davis. Another fantastic vise collector.

We are all just people on a computer, and from the little we share on these forums, hard to know if someone is struggling to get by, living well, good or bad health, great person or miserable #&%€√. To see that pic of you, with you and Demo going on a 5 day pic, that's what it is all about.

I am happy with where I am in life, but often think if I could go back 20-30 years and not work to make a living but, do what I like and be able to support myself and family while doing it....if only.

God bless you and anyone else who can be so lucky

THAT IS THE BUSINESS, SIR!

I'd offer my liver too..., but it probably resembles a rotten walnut...

But I must say, 2 years ago I got all 4 coronary arteries replaced on my heart, so it's a "clean one owner", it too is "on the table" for the REED!

I WANT THE REED, LOL!:lol_hitti

COOL stuff, MAN!

Thanks!

Mike

Now that is funny! Glad you got your plumbing squared away!

Vises: you can keep posting up pictures of your special vises as you have time. i've honestly never heard Zoomie or anybody offer up a body part for a vise. we've had many offers of Goldnen Monkeys though and i'm not sure i've even seen one or would trade for one.

great picture on Demo's little trailer. i always thought Demo was older than i am, but really don't know. good for you for collecting old iron for 20 years at your young age cause i don't think i started until i was about 50.

ZOOMIE & ALL: GJ is the only place i visit on the net. i don't do facebook, twitter, and i rarely use other forums about tools cause it might take weeks to get any response. at least you know there is a HEARTBEAT HERE. BTW glad to hear your heart is good so don't give away any body parts. ok?

FMC: GREAT POSTS the last few days. i've also always loved your sig line cause i remember buying a tool belt just because when Tim Allen was doing his SEARS stand up comedy on Showtime before he became the TOOL MAN.

ALL: i had a few new members visit me and go home with some old cast iron and i think they'll post them up as they get them spiffed up. i really couldn't tell you how many i have left, but a few big uns have left their resting spots to find greener pastures that is for certain.

some of you might have heard or seen i'm building a wedding chair for my handicapped daughter and it's about done, but i have some very noisy new casters. anybody know of a high quality (affordable) 4 or 5 inch caster that is quiet please post up on my wedding chair thread. or take a peek and see what i built so far.

cheers

VISEs, great to see you participating and welcome to the show. Funny seeing you on the 8" vise stand with all that warm clothing. Little colder up our way hu. Your vises are as unique as Demos and the guys will enjoy your pic's. Keep it up and I can't wait for the pic's from overseas. Gotta show your power hammers too one day.

I do have several power hammers. I've been rebuilding them and selling them for years. I have several that of course aren't for sale but I keep 15 to 20 at all times that I would sell. IMG_4865.JPG

Zoomie: thanks for the KUDOS. keep your parts and you'll find a 406 someday soon. which 400 series do you own?

Vises: nothing like showing off a little OLD IRON. i watched this big punch being being moved about a year and a half ago and it wasn't coming to my place. do you have bridge cranes in your shop or just fork lifts?

thanks again and i'm sure some of us have lost our bottom jaws on the floor seeing all the iron you've collected over the years.

WELL DONE SIR!!

VA: you know as he VISES was posting his old iron and talking about Demos i was thinking exactly that about the HUNT BROS. speaking of if you joined those two i bet the earth's rotation would slow down if you moved near them.

Here is an interesting vise. I've had it several years and never hear of another one. It's solid bronze. The spindle handle is steel but I'm guessing it originally had a wood handle.

Those are t jaws, I was talking about u or c jaws, whatever you want to call them. I don't guess it matters, except that I was thinking about making a little guide, and it would make it even more confusing if Reed used three different jaw types.

All:
After digesting the magnitude of VISEs collection of vises and power hammers, I have returned to normal, whatever that is. Hopefully most of the rest of you guys have as well. :D

And I too count myself among among those who abstain from ALL social media except GJ.
I have personally met and traded with a couple of guys here and have emailed back and forth about a wide variety of things.
Not to mention a ton of excellent practical advice shared here on these pages.

It's been exactly 8 months to the exact day of the month since my last post on this thread. During that time you guys have been able to post 6,847 replies. Wow, that's about 1.18 posts per hour. VISEs, you certainly came out of left field with the tonnage you bring to the table. I'm not sure you anticipated the responses you're receiving so far, but dude, great collection man!

Not sure if anyone else has told him, but you would have to agree, he *****! (That's a good thing around here )

*****? ***** does not do vices justice. A whole new term has to be assigned to this type of collection. Maybe, "***** on steroids", "mega *****", "***** turned up to 11"????
I'm afraid of what's coming next. A trailer of NOS vises of the most rare variety. Each one with a #10 modeling lingerie next to them. A vending machine filled with the very best cold beer available for a penny per vend. An open barbecue with perfectly cooked meat goods and finally, saving the best for last, an unlimited supply of crispy bacon. Ahhhhh. The splendor.
You see there is always a problem posting these photos. The expectation for subsequent photos being more impressive than before exists and, at some point, maybe after the lingerie models and bacon, there has to be a limit?
Or maybe not.
So far you have given eye candy above and beyond imagination. Thanks

The responses have been great! A true testament of the gentlemanly (and womanly to be politically correct) structure this form is built on.
If I **** then I **** and you must all be suckers as well! So **** away suckers and go buy more vises!!!!

Why?

I've got some reeds with that style of jaw.

I'd say that Kwoswalt is right about the C jaws being a pre-owner Modification.---Probably the cast jaw faces were worn smooth and rounded, so someone machined the faces to receive C jaws that were also machined.---But that is JMO, no doubt someone here is going to post a 105 year old NOS Reed, in mint condition, still in the box, with those exact jaws, that's going to pee all over my opinion.---But that's one way to get it posted.

Incidentally, I know where there is a super nice Reed #108 that's going on EBay soon that has the T jaws.---Looks hardly used, 281 lbs. of it.---He hasn't made it public yet, as far as I know so I won't either.---My 608 Columbian has those exact T jaws, pined in from the top.---I think all the #10---3 through 8, series, all had the T jaws installed.---The 108 is a swivel based and the 208 is a swivel based also.---The 10 series is Reeds latter version of the 20 series. The 208R is 10 lbs. heaver than the plane 208 or the 108.---I wished I could post a pic of it but I can't get a copy of the url.---So there.---Man I love those Reeds!

VISEs recent collection reveal has been totally amazing and awe-inspiring, and has also allowed me to make the argument to my wife that my 30ish or so vise collection is just kid stuff and nothing to worry about ... it's guys like VISEs that have a real problem, not me. Don't think she's buyin it but, in my mind, now anything below 400 is really just kid's play ;)

Missed another set of Equalizer jaws a couple of days ago.---Nice set, watched them for 5 days, sniped them with 6 seconds to go and then EBay decided to take a smoke break.---The little wheel turned for 2 minutes, and when it posted in real time, they had put 17 seconds back on the clock, just like in football.---But when I refreshed,,,game over.---That's how I lost those jaws.---Hope someone on here got them.

But I did however get these little angle jaws.---Made well, good machining, look hardly used.---Now if someone could just tell me what they do, I'd be much obliged.---Guess that's why they look hardly used, the PO knew as much about them as I do.

VA, I can show better in a drawing then trying to explain what I am thinking. If I was asked to design a clamp for angled parts and had your jaws in my hand I would come up with something like this. Your one jaw is missing a round bar. Just my thoughts.

I was going to bid too, but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to use them, LOL!

KM, I think you are right.---I believe both are supposed to have the round bar and bolt to secure it.---But according to your diagram, are the regular vise jaws supposed to have a rounded/concave recess for the bars to seat in?---I really don't think I am visualizing it right.:headscrat

What if instead of using the regular jaws the round bar index's underneath the regular jaws in the throat of the vise?

Yes with my drawing VA the vise has a arc cut but a clamp on like bl00's drawing is most likely what was designed for those jaws. When you throw something down on paper it is easier to visualize how these jaws can be used. What stumps me is a short pivot rod not like the one drawing bl00 showed. That one is long. If you look close at bl00's drawing you see that the bar is the holding force when clamping on something if the jaws are turned a bit. VA's jaws are designed to be backed up but maybe not captured like I have drawn. A 1/2 arc would support clamping pressure. Just thinking like a Toolmaker when I see a part and design something around it. Now that I confused everyone, any vises to see.
