VISEs, that is a real nice anvil vise, and I've always been partial to the split bases.---That little devil has a lot of good features and it's pretty rare.---Ward made a lot of those anvil vises, but lacked a horn.

thank you for the kind words. I agree Demoman is an outstanding guy and most importantly a wonderful family man. He and I recently went on a 5 day picking trip. WHAT A BLAST! We filled up my 30' gooseneck and need to go back the rest!

Wow A lot of action since I last looked on here. Yes we did have an outing at the vise ranch here at Poverty Flats with Vises from Texas. It is probably good he does not live closer as i'm sure we would be a worse influence on each other. Two weeks ago he called and talked me into buying a 5'x20' welding table that weighed right at 10,000# and that was just the top. I'll post pics when the ice melts!!! Suitable for a Reed 109! He was a welcome visitor with an equal passion to go hunt another vise and find treasure. He has an outstanding collection of vises and anvils. My fear is that he will one day overtake my vise count but I have a plan. I will rent vises from VA or KM Scott to use as props! for the counting
And yes I did turn 47 yesterday. I can hear the John Connely song playing "I'm on the back side of 40 and still holdin' on"

VISES: my little pile of vises pales to yours, Demo's, Zoomies, and VA's, and a few other members and i'm still trying to figure out which ones i like the best. i've put up my top 5 or 10 and i think it ended up being top 20 and it changes as i see and find more.

so my question to you and maybe Demo if he's lurking is which vises would make your top 10 or 20? and it's OK IF YOU POST PICTURES TOO!!

ALL: a member started a new thread in the Vintage section showing your HOLY GRAIL or best tool and wondering if any of you would like to post pictures of your favorite vises even if you've posted them on the thread a year or more ago especially if they are still your favorite one, two or more?

i'll post mine as i get time to take a few pictures after this WEDDING, but would love to have some GOOD VISE (VICE) **** to look at while the gals in my house are planning the WEDDING 24/7.

Okay, I'm officially blown away by VISEs collection!

I just finished writing an article on evaluating used vises for my website, and I'd like some feedback to make sure I didn't miss anything major. If you have a couple of minutes, take a look and let me know what you think. We see folks asking a lot of these questions, so I thought it made sense to cover.

I should add that I plan to add pictures soon, but didn't have the ones I wanted handy.

Nice article! I'm a novice vise collector, and this type of stuff helps a lot. If I may, seems to be a minor typo in the seventh paragraph... seems it should be "and it shows when they break."

This belongs to a friend of mine we are both in our 60's and he got it before he could drive, said he lugged it home on his bicycle. Wish I had a video of that.

That was quite a feat Jim... it weighs about 165, that WOULD be a great video....awesome vise... way overbuilt... as I recall the screw is 1.75 and the nut is cast into the body

I'd say that Kwoswalt is right about the C jaws being a pre-owner Modification.---Probably the cast jaw faces were worn smooth and rounded, so someone machined the faces to receive C jaws that were also machined.---But that is JMO, no doubt someone here is going to post a 105 year old NOS Reed, in mint condition, still in the box, with those exact jaws, that's going to pee all over my opinion.---But that's one way to get it posted.

Incidentally, I know where there is a super nice Reed #108 that's going on EBay soon that has the T jaws.---Looks hardly used, 281 lbs. of it.---He hasn't made it public yet, as far as I know so I won't either.---My 608 Columbian has those exact T jaws, pined in from the top.---I think all the #10---3 through 8, series, all had the T jaws installed.---The 108 is a swivel based and the 208 is a swivel based also.---The 10 series is Reeds latter version of the 20 series.The 208R is 10 lbs. heaver than the plane 208 or the 108.---I wished I could post a pic of it but I can't get a copy of the url.---So there.---Man I love those Reeds!

VA, at least as far as the 134-1/2 Reed SHD exposed screw vises, pretty sure the "C" shaped jaws are OEM. Too many of them with that style jaw to be owner mods.

Bought this for $40. I know the swivel jaw area is broken and bolted for repair but everything else is near perfect once I dip her in the e-tank. I might part it out depending on what I find under the swivel jaw. I'm guessing it's cracked right where the locating pin goes across to hold the swivel jaw in place.

That is a difficult one to answer as I have this obsession with so many of them but let's get right down to it.....I like BIG BIG BIG BIG HEAVY HEAVY METAL. That said you can probably pick my tops...all the 8"ers, 9ers, but they must have the big boy Rail road stand to really make the full impact...if they don't they are still cool but the don't give me "zipper burn" like one does when mounted to a railroad stand.

Question? If Demoman and myself were to have the stands cast up how many of you would be buyers for one? We have been kicking the idea around and may just pull the trigger if there is enough interest....if not we may still do it for the big vises we have that don't have stands.

After covering the big boys in the top 10 I got to the exotic vises..... like this one....why? Primarily because I actually have all the pieces....it's the only one I've come across that did. I love it!

Then we journey into one of the most delicious vises I have (personal opinion)

The Bonney rapid transit vise! Wow wow wow! Have you seen how these work? If I can figure out how to send a video I will do it...these suckers are awesome!!

I really like starrett vises as well. So well made!

Hard to pick the top but thats it at a glance.

understood... still kicking myself for not making the drive to michigan to scarf that no 3 on c/l a few months back. brutal iron ! the lead screw is a monster in itself... maybe some day

TD: i have a Vanderman 1 and it's not an easy vise to move around even at about 100 pounds and not thinking i would have been able to drive a #3 down the road on a bike cause i thought it was closer to 200 pounds. even at 165 if that's what it is i think i would have called my mom.

Joe: so when are you going to show us your collection or maybe you tell your bride it's INVENTORY? do you have a count or have you sold a bunch so you are keeping it under 100? i'm sure there are even more guys like DEMO and VISES and maybe you even know a few. i think Zoomie's friend that is an Ebay seller has more than a few, but i know he also has a shop full of anvils.

The cost all depends on how many they cast at one time. The more they cast the cheaper.

VISES: i guess i should have said the MORE INTERESTING VISES. since you have 400 or so i bet there are a lot of duplicates and maybe 20 or more small open screw ones with every imaginable name on them. it's hard to just buy the 8 and 9 inchers as you know even in KANSAS where they have the best RUSTY GOLD according to a movie writer.

keep posting those pictures up as you have time and want to cause i'm pretty sure there isn't a person that's been on this thread for very long that isn't appreciating every post.

That is a cole drill. You actually have a cole vise that goes with it. I saw it in another pic.

Love the vises! If I ever find a sprocket for cheap I know what I'm doing with it.

There's a local Prentiss No 19 for sale...the seller is asking $60. I see a cracked slide in the rear and possible missing pins/screws (not sure - see pic below), but other than that, is it worth buying? Still usable?

Dynasty, Those three pin holes are used in fixturing when the swivel jaw was manufactured. Two on one side and one on the other. Imagine how you would locate and hold the swivel jaw to machine it. The cracked slide is repairable. I'd be all over that vise.
