American Scale, Erie, and Yost. Athol, Morgan, Simplex, Wilton, and Parker had 8's. Columbian, Rock Island, and Prentiss had 8 1/2's. And these are only American companies. There might be some I'm forgetting as well.

A quick fun story. Let's title this one "you never know".
You never know......what may pop up or where or why it may pop up for sale so I say always and I mean always be on the look out! I watch Craigslist like a hawk for a couple reasons. One is "you never know" what's going to come up for sale next (the other reason is I have a newbie "so called" vise collector breathing down the back of my neck and it absolutely pisses me off when he gets one before me! The guy has zero territory respect)
So I check Craigslist and I see that someone in Houston Tx just posted 2 NOS Wilton 800n and 2 NOS still in the box Yost 34C. Of course I did the responsible thing and I stopped working to call this guy. He tells me that the Wilton vises had just sold but the other two were still available. I wanted to cry like a little baby (I actually did cry but who cares it was an emotional loss for me)
I bought the 2 Yost vises and they are nice good heavy vises but I wanted the stupid Wilton vises...so call me spoiled....a brat....or whatever you want. I won't disagree!! HA!!! LMAO!!
A month goes by and I receive a call from a young guy in the next town who has a NOS Wilton 800n that he wants to sell.....I said wait a freaking minute!! You do? I said "you actually have two you sniper sucker you"...and the phone went dead....WTheck!! I instantly called back....no answer...dammit!! He hung up on me!!! I blew it! What a shame!! I was a failure!!
Meanwhile later that same evening.....my phone rings again...same number as the guy with the two Wilton's!!! Hello sir hello sir, I'm stuttering.....he says "sorry about my phone dropping your call earlier...my battery went dead. PRAISE THE LORD!!!! I'm not a looser, failure after all!!! We talk for a good while and I end up with both of the Wilton's!! What a victory!
So keep looking cause you never know....

Awesome work on those jaws Kevin. I agree someone down the road will be wondering where those jaws came from.
$1,400 each on the Wilton's.
$400 each on the Yost! Killed that part of the deal. Which is why I didn't mind paying up for the Wilton's. It all balances out

Definitely not chump change but for new, fantastic prices. The 34C's, somewhere around $1400 each is the best online price you can find. And for Wilton 800's, maybe mid to high 2 grand each would be the best prices.
So as Oldie likes to say....YOU DUN GOOD BUBBA!

The train behind the reed 109 is made by American amusement co. It is bigger than it looks. It has an engine from a 9n ford tractor. It will run this summer if I want to continue to live at my house according to my wife! Got to get it going for my kids.

also just curious cause you have a few more vises than most of us what does your bride say about your vice for vises since you don't seem to hide them?

Here is the other Reed 109 I got this summer . Notice it has the 4 bolt pattern to hold it down. I am guessing it to be earlier than the one Kevin just finished but not sure. My earliest Reed catalog says it is catalog #37 and it had all the telegraph codes listed in the rear so I know it is old but no date. Im not sure when Reed started. Maybe someone on here has an earlier catalog. Here are my kids with it for size. I saw one for sale that was a 209 in South Carolina about 10 years ago. I bet it is somewhere near there still. There was a broken one in Texas a couple years ago and I stupidly passed on one that was on ebay about 6 years ago for $700 but it had a welded foot. I should have bought it. I do not know why they don't show up more as there had to be quite a few around.

The Reed 109 will go inside. I am making a vise stand out of some big iron. I will post it here when I get it started. It sould weigh about 1000# when I'm done.
Actually my wife has never really questioned the vice for vises much. She is very very understanding. What you don't realize is that I also have a big collection of blacksmith equipment, steam whistles, huge old prairie tractors and gang plows.
I doubt she knows how many vises I have. She collect nothing so I have to make up for it. Her favorite thing to ask is "how many do you really need" to which I reply "I'm not sure but I'll let you know when I reach that point". She also like to tell me " don't buy anything we don't need". This is a trick question. How would I know we didn't need it till I got it home!

Thanks, way cool, how much track do you have for it? As to the early and late 109's I'd say the 4 bolt is later, seems they were getting away from that "key" that had to be notched into the bench.

Demo, Dayid has the 109 with the 3 hole base at 283 lbs..---I was wondering if the 109 with the 4 hole base was heavier?

The 4 hole 109 is 297# which is what the literature says but I did weigh it. Somewhere on here I posted the entire Reed catalog but that was years ago. I will see if I can find it.

Very pleased with this save
, the vise is now in my paint stripping tank (purple power) and when all of that blue paint is off, will go on to the evaporust bucket and then final paint. I have so many other lil projects going this won't get painted until next weekend most likely.
Made some progress on my Wilti C-0 double pin today too, got both jaws off after spending some time drilling out stubborn bolts, it is soaking too, it too may be to final paint next weekend.
Very productive day in the shop.

Wow....after all those pics of the heavy iron, this one feels pretty tiny!
I broke out the Wilton Magnet and activated the Long Range function (WMLR) to reel in this dirty dog of a Wilton 1780 from about 2 hours south in Ohio. The jaws are trashed, but I already have a set from Reverend Kevin. It's missing a pipe jaw, and the tail cap, but other than being filthy is actually pretty solid. I thought it was rust, but it's almost all just dust and dirt on it. I sprayed the logo with brake cleaner and sure enough, there was original paint showing!
I'm thinking of painting it in Snap-On Electric Orange for something a little different.

All the 8's I am aware of, the question was if anyone else had 9's. And just to qualify it somewhat, in regards the the old American iron.
I know there are currently 9, 10 & 12" and possibly bigger made in China bench vises, but I don't care about those.

And they were all made in the same city.
the holland and reed plants were just a few miles apart, yost was outside of meadville about 25 mi from erie. do you suppose all 3 might of used a common foundry and machined castings in house respectivly ? just a wild guess... i have a 105 and a 16 both with 4 bolt bases , always found the similarity odd.

Erie Toolworks had a 9" @ 390 lbs and also a 10" at 495 lbs
Stephens had a 9 1/2" @ 380 lbs for the regular or 420 lbs for the swivel base
I'm sure there are plenty of others waiting to be discovered.

I would love to see a Parker 979. The 978 weighs in at 298 pounds. So I would think a 9 inch version would be at least in 350-400 lb range.
