I just got my vise mostly pulled apart and I have stripped most of the paint off it. I had a broken screw holding one of the jaws that I will need to replace. Does anyone know how the end cap comes off. I don't want to ruin anything while trying to remove it. Maybe I should just leave it on paint it and assemble it. Any advice would be welcomed.

Round the ends of a wooden dowel that fits in your threaded nut and tap it out with a mallet. Does not take much to drive it out. If you use a square end punch then you will dent the inside of the end cap. The screw is a 1/4:20 and that uses a #7 drill as the tap drill, I would use a 3/16 drill and see if it loosens. Nice vise. Thank you for the info. I did get the screw out now to find a similar replacement for it. Looks like the year on this one is stamped 6-71 do you happen know what color that would have been? The light blue or Verde Green?

I do not know the correct color, not much of a Wilton history buff. Both choices are what everyone uses. Shucks, paint it what color you like or maybe someone will mention the correct color for your year.
I'll probably end up with the light blue the green doesn't seem to be stocked at my local hardware store. This will get quite a bit of use and I think just about any color will beat the messy yellow and white combo it was.

sld961, I believe Maui is right about the buggered up slide on the Columbian, but you are in luck, Columbian used a tough malleable steel in their vises which bends before it will crack.---Which means like Kwoswalt99 said, most of that can be pounded back in shape.---If you get it, reshape as much as possible before you grind anything.---Columbians are good vises, they just don't get the respect that some others do.

Hi, can anyone give me some info on this vise? I can't make out the model number. How big is it, how much does it weigh, how much is it worth (central PA)?
I'm looking for a general purpose vise to use, not a collector's vise.

I have a ridgid that looks almost identical to that. My ridgid has 506 stamped on the side and is 101Lbs.

I have been to the Madison, GA tool meet for the last two years. I bought quite a few vises there. Tool trading starts at daylight ( or before ) in the parking lot. You never know what will turn up ? It is on Feb. 3rd & 4th but you have to be a member of M-WTCA

Meatsis: I sold my Simplex 61s to a young member and even though it was a couple of years ago my back still is sore from putting it in his trunk. well not really, but it is a beast and I know he didn't have it easy lifting it out unless he took it apart. i'm guessing in the 140 to 160 range cause it's every bit as heavy as my Morgan 160 and Rock Island 577.
ALL: speaking of Desmond Stephens, Simplex didnt they end up being Rigid? and when did the names change?
any of you with Craftsman 519x's can you post up pictures of your vises on the new 5198 thread in Vintage tools with the DATE STAMPS too?
it's looking more and more like ROCK ISLAND VISE company made the 519x's, but still looking for information. i actually have a newer wood vise in it's original box MADE IN JAPAN with 5195 on it that doesn't mean much, but just saying we are gathering FACTS and trying to solve a mystery. personally i think it was MR. PLUMB in the STUDY.

Wrapped up a Reed 109 repair last weekend and wanted to share a few pic's. This big guy was treated a little rough.

Chopped and welded up the jaw towers and filled the missing material with new jaws. 100 years from now someone will look at this and think Parker worked together on jaw design. Jaws are 9 inches wide and 2-1/2 inches tall.

Repaired a tail split and added a new handle. 1-1/4 diameter with 2" balls and 24 inches long. It is a big one. Everything about this vise is big, shucks the nut is 5-1/2 inches long and spindle threads are 1-1/2:3 Acme.

Dolex. Here is a vise that I had shipped over from France with a couple anvils. It's pretty well built. Nothing crazy. Just a nice, different, design.
Say shouldn't every vise be able to clamp down on a 3" x 12" bridge timber!!?!?
