I came across a VW wheel bolt that I couldn't remove with a friends IR TI gun at 150 psi :shocking: (my QTiMAX gun got left at home), makes me kinda want a 40" 3/4" breaker bar for back up

Just use a 1/2 inch breaker bar.. I'm scared of snapping those bolts though, i'm not sure how i'd get the stud out

A piece of pipe is cheaper and doesn't require any more tools.

Dumb question though, someone said that some german cars have left hand thread lugs nuts on the drivers side but I can't confirm that.

What cfm is the compressor rated at? Also what fitting and hose size is being used on the impact? You may just have inadequate airflow to the tool. I work at a truck shop and I rarely even have to pull out a 3/4 gun.

I have yet to come across a lugnut or wheel bolt that my Snap-On MG725 couldn't get off especially on a VW. Snapped plenty of studs taking off lugnuts that were cross threaded though. :D

I have a '97 A4 that definitely does not have left hand thread lug nuts (bolts actually in my case).

I have come across some cars with left handed lug nuts over the years, doing DIY on friends cars. Those I can remember are Mercedes W-123 and 70's/80's Ford Transit van/pu. Sometimes on one wheel only. :headscrat

Have a nice day. :)

Are the lefthanded lugs marked like they used to do on old Mopar products? Mopar put a L stamped into the end of the lug.

I would imagine that there is a lot more salt used on the roads in Minnesota compared to California. Penetrating oil and some brake parts cleaner after the wheel is off is quicker and easier than a broken wheel stud.

Ahh, the infamous seized VW wheelbolts..

I use a step-down adapter with my 36" ratchet. They very rarely break, they're very tough bolts. I've never come accross a left-handed wheel bolts on a VAG car. The only left-handed bolt i've come accross anywhere on a VAG car is the serpentine belt tensioner bolt on some FSI engines.

I haven't come accross any W123s with left-handed wheelbolts or hub nuts either.

I think the only thing you'll accomplish with a 3/4" air wrench and some serious torque is a broken off stud.

As others have mentioned, I'd use 1/2" breaker bar with cheater pipe if necessary, and use leverage to loosen it.

I'm all for buying new tools, but this seems like a bad idea.

My pruning shears last week were left-handed thread! :spit:

Damn bolt wouldn't loosen up for nothing. Got out my 1/2" drive S832 and went at it. SNAP!! I snapped that bolt clean off with a snap-on.
