hello all i didnt know where else to post this so here goes...

So at the maintenance base I work at we do quite a few combustion liner and high stage turbine stage 1 and 2 boroscopes. and my job as a mech is simply to open the boro plugs.

The engine in question is a cf34-8c, and if memory serves me right I swear at the last base they always told us to use a 50/50 mix of 5606 and acetone on the boro plugs (especially the dreded s18 plug) and let it dwell for at least an hour.

So my question to you guys is do you think atf or 5606 will work better for the acetone mixed with xxxx homebrew penetrating oil.

also you might be asking why im asking about this since i work at a maintenance base for aircraft. well we have been out of kroil for two weeks now and also I remember reading that acetone and atf makes some mean penetrating oil.

Thanks all
Sean

Either will work.
Since the 5606 is available, i would probably just use it.

It's provided by the shop but they have been out for two weeks and I'm looking for something that works better than kroil if possible
Kroil is pretty much...

Atf
Kerosene
Acetone

The above home brew is just as good as kroil, but cost $2.50 to make vs $18 for 18oz kroil. They are lots of YT Avids, where guys test the home brew vs Kroil.
These pnumatic canisters are cheap and chemical resistant. I get 2 at time from Amazon.

I don't know if this product is available in the US but at the base maintenance facility I work at we use a lot of Motip Penetrating oil. A couple of days ago I managed to stir a couple of stuck link bearings on the V2500 eng aft mount. Hope that helps.

Sure... There are quite a few to choose from. I just ordered 2 more of the below ones. They are a lil spendy, but they are rebuildable.

I know several techs who use the ones below. They are probably the most heavy duty.

The ones I have are not as forgiving, but I don't use them all day long. All one the ones I have listed will tolerate brake clean, or a home brew of atf-acetone. If you are not using you mix for more than a month, I would flush the valve assembly with mineral spirits.

I'm just a new diesel tech starting out, but this is what all the older guys in the shop recommend.

If you are at work, you might be careful with the home brew stuff. If the epa did an inspection you might have issues. Same goes for a lack of an MSDS.

Haha yeah I would be more worried about the FAA than the EPA. But it does beg the question. At my last job they had a Maintinance news letter specifically telling us to mix it. So if I get a canister tag I would think I would be OK. But it begs the question

Do I just pick the worse of both chemicals to put on my tag for the health/ fire/ special diamond or would it change?

Thanks
Sean

Kroil is good from what I here. But is prohibitively expensive.

Go to their website, kano labs and watch the "try 'em" deals. You can normally get 2 cans for one and I haven't ran into them limiting try 'ems. I only break kroil out for the real nasty stuff so a can last a long time for me. Otherwise I Raab Starrett m1 for most tbings.
