Here are some shots of my 2C. Got it from the original owner, he said it was grey. I would call it medium grey. He also said he only used it for woodworking, and wanted the extra jaw depth.

Note that mine is pre patent, yours is post patent.

Heck those look like bare metal. Is that yours? It looks brand new!

Here's the one I just picked up off eBay. It's a 4 1/2" from Chicago, made in September 1946. It appears to be in really good condition, including the cap.

Did early ones not have any model or part numbers cast on them?

It is mine, all mine.

The PO told me he got it "probably just after WW2". The only thing done to it was brushing off the sawdust. I may take some WD-40 to it, I think the sawdust left something of a coating on it.

The Pat Pending on it puts it pre-1938, but the removable jaws definitely post WW2.

That 2C and the NuTyp are my favorites.

The Oswego vise companies were a very tangled web of businesses, much of it revolved around E.W. Fulton. Fulton bought the Oswego Tool Company in 1930 and reorganized it into the INT Corporation - International NuTyp Tool Company. INT produced the NuTyp Vise as well as other vises.

From my research, it looks like E.W. Fulton's vise businesses went into bankruptcy in 1935. This legal notice appeared n a number of Oswego area (Fulton County, New York) papers:

1935 Bankruptcy Notice:
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT for the Northern District of New York in the Matter of International NuTyp Tool Corporation, Bankrupt.
To the creditors of the International NuTyp Tool Corporation, of the City of Oswego, County of Oswego and District aforesaid, a Bankruptcy.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on the 23rd day of January 1935 the said International NuTyp Tool Corporation was ???? adjudicated a bankrupt and that the first meeting and hearing of its creditors will be held at the office of Avery H. Wright referee in Bankruptcy Room 3, Oswego City Savings Bank Building, Oswego N.Y. on the 14th day of March, 1935 at 10 o'clock A.M. at which time the said creditors ??? attend, prove their claims, approve a Trustee, examine the bankrupt and transact such other business as may properly come before said meeting.
NOTICE IS ALSO GIVEN that you and each of you are hereby required to show cause at the time and place heretofore mentioned why the business of the above named bankrupt corporation should not be continued under the Trustee hereinafter to be named.
Dated at Oswego, N. Y. this ?? day of March, 1935.
AVERY H. WRIGHT
Referee in Bankruptcy

My guess is that the Oswego Brass and Iron Foundry bought the rights from Fulton's company, took on the name of Sawyer Tool and started producing Fulton's vise line in 1935. There were some ads for the NuTyp (now a Sawyer product) into the early 1940's. Another guess, Sawyer Tool was a causality of WW2.

My research into Sawyer is mostly a dead end. There was a Sawyer Tool of Fitchburg, MA in the early 1900's, but they made precision tools.

VA, Get, bl00 and some of the other research geeks may have better or more complete info.

Due to copyright restrictions, it requires trips to the Carnegie to get any good info after about 1917.

Hope this helps a little.

Wow! This was extremely helpful thank you! I plan to keep it forever! It is solid and well built. So sounds like its from the 1930s?!?! Jeez. It was in a old detached garage that looked like a pretty old workplace. I didnt know the workplace was THAT OLD!

It would be interesting to know the date stamp on that one.

I actually prefer that style...the jaws have more serrations, the bolt heads don't get messed up during use, and I'm convinced that setup is stronger.

It's more expensive to make that way, and I'm sure that's why Wilton changed. Their web diagrams for the 600 post-1998 show bolt holes from the face side and I also found the pre-1998 diagram which also has bolt holes from the face side.

Both of mine are from the 1990s and have the bolts from the rear...can't recall the exact years, but definitely 1990s.

I'm trying to get the date off the slide from the new owner now. I bought this vise having never seen one before, and immediately knew it was too big for my needs when I saw it. I have replaced it with a new 450S.

That's a 5 gallon bucket it's setting on!

I bet this is where I got the 2016, not off the slide.

Here it is with the 450.

That picture was not the one I intended to post. Ops!

I work for a graphics company. I've seen worse examples of "not the one I intended".

We had two projects a few years ago. One was for a medical journal, and the other was an annual report. Someone named two images incorrectly, and when they got swapped out by the automated system, a picture of a diseased female body part was put in place of a female executive.

Luckily we caught it before anything left the building. But it was still funny.

I put my vise project on the "what did you do in your garage" thread this morning. didn't think to post it here.

I'm a vise rookie, but picked up the little Dunlap and the Chas Parker #104 free last week.

I'm going to build a nice pedestal for the Parker and park it next to my welder at home in the garage. i use a 6 1/2" 1980s USA craftsman vise on the home work bench, I'd like to upgrade that one day also.

Anybody interested in trading a baby Wilton for my two (2) 12" bridge clamps (38lbs each, 40Klb rated)? Both drop forged, one is an Armstrong and the other is a Jorgensen, but they are virtually identical. It's my bday today, be nice ;)

I would buy those clamps instead (because i don't have any Wiltons to trade, pretty rare over here) but i suspect shipping would be crippling. I love those massive clamps.

Also interesting Dutch that those style of claps over here always come with a short threaded section so won't clamp anything less than a few inches thick even on the small ones.

CW: i'm guessing you are seeing a lot of BRIDGE CLAMPS which might have ended up over there in one of the World Wars.

Dutch & CW: i'm guessing TJ's clamps will be gone soon one way or another, but if one or both of you can manage to make it to Seattle with one of those Quick release Parkingsons and/or old Records i guarantee you won't leave clampless from SEATTLE. i might have more clamps than a person needs at the moment and most are pre WWII cast.

TJ: so what model are you (or what year were you born)? HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

how was the move and did you and the wife stay on good terms the entire time? moving the Prentiss 98 couldn't have been fun, but guessing more alone time with it was ok?

Yes CW, I suppose since the screws are somewhat available you could probably find some long ones, I do have a few American ones like those, just not any real big ones. Real useful to have around but not something that gets used much.

Has anyone seen one similar to this ? The only marking is on the bottom JMF. It is as tight as a Wilton and has a brass nut. The jaws are 3" and held on with a stud that has been peened. The handle ball ends appear to have soldier on them also.

BLS: thanks for taking the time to find out the information. i thought that style Wilton wasn't made any longer.

ALL: so while BLS mentions his 6 inch Wilton has the old style jaws that are screwed in from the back one of my clients is selling an 8 inch new version of the same style. since i don't shop for new vises is Wilton maybe bringing back this AWESOME version of their bigger vises?

if any of you want a scratch and dent 8 inch wilton for around $1100 shipped PM me and i'll give you details.
