PFSard-although it's oak, Gerstner uses a dark stain. You might try Minwax "walnut". If you have some veneer left over use that as a test panel first. If Behlen stains are still around you might try that rather than Midwax. Belhen stains have a very high solids content and I've gotten some nice results with their products in the past but I haven't bought any in quite a few years.

Just found this on Craigslist. The want is strong with this one. I assume that isn't the original color?

Urgh. I have been chasing one of those for a year now. It was red originally but this one can easily be fixed.

I'm getting ready to restore my first vintage toolbox a MAC from the 80's early 90's. After I clean and degrease the exterior that has minimal rust any suggestions on the procedure and materials required to prepare the surface for the new primer and paint? I will be purchasing the original paint from the distributer any suggestions on a primer?

I paid $200. for a later KR300B with the optional KR431 3 Drawer set. I heard of one going for $500. which is high.

Not sure if this Gerstner is vintage, but ... I wanted it. Other than the top being funky, the box is in fairly good shape. I haven't decided how to deal with the delamination, so I'm looking for suggestions.
sorry it took so long to respond, been kinda buzy.
is it vintage(old)? yes.
from the pix you showed id put that chest between 1940 and 1950.

I picked up this Proto box at a local online auction for $10. I couldn't believe no one else was bidding on it.

Hi all

I have a Waterloo 100/1200 combination that has fairly good paint for 1979 but the drawer pulls are quite rusty. I'll guess that re-chroming several dozen pulls is price prohibitive, what is my next best alternative? Is there any paint that is convincing from 5 feet?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Not a good picture, but will have to do. Picked up this Plomb tool chest from an antique store today for $60. The home made cart will go to the wife for use in her garden shed.

Bought this trolley from the estate of a scooter mechanic who was in business for more than 40 years. It has the lowercase 'a' in the logo. Need the cast iron indexing boxes as they have perished. Everything else still in perfect condition after a cleanup. Pics "before" and "after" cleanup.

Local estate sale ad. I know the new ones come in every color under the sun, but really? Purple? Who does this to a nice vintage SO?

Picked up this Plvmb Toolmobile a few years ago and you can't tell from the before pictures but the rounded sides were all smashed in and other dents all over drawer fronts. Drilled holes and rust too. Also found this Proto Chest soon after in better shape. Welded up the holes and fixed some dents in the Toolmobile and then took it to a body shop for paint. Have been looking for Plumb tools and now have my Plvmb Museum - sort of a tribute to my dad who used these tools at his Buick dealership for over 50 years. Going to use some of these nice tools on my 78 Ranchero when the weather warms up.

I found this SK Machinist Chest on eBay thinking it was perfect for some of my SK stuff. Then there were some really good sales on SK offset ratchets and other stuff so I had to go out and buy a Craftsman roller and intermediate drawers that were on sale for $99. Used some rattle cans of Rustoleum Hammer Tone green to give everything the SK look. All my SK stuff in one place now.

Wow, REDVETTE, nice body work. The only thing better than bringing something of value back to life, is when there's a meaningful connection like you have to your dad's tools. Well done. Bonus points awarded.

I love this cabinet .... I'm sure you know what that odd fixture on top is for .....
I don't expect that there are many around unmodified ....

That would be a rack for hanging pistons and valves on  You are right, those are hard to find :0 I have been looking for a tool mobile and piston rack for 3 years now and have never seen one in person here in the northwest :) Red Vette did an excellent job on that one

Awesome collection! Really like the restored stuff! Has changed my ind somewhat! I grew up in a family owned auto parts store. we sold some Plomb early then Proto and few others later on. Grand dad and dad always building model T and A ground up while I was growing up. Now I'm building a couple model As with my retired dad and a PLOMB collection. No tool mobile yet though!

Picked up my grandfathers snap on boxes last week from my dads. Both are '71 models. Kra 396 and a Kr 531. Both were we used at his buisness in Lancaster tx. I dont plan to restore them, just clean them up and keep using them. Snap is sending me new slides under warranty.2278138116ca0237bbc5bd1e0a8f7e45.jpg6c45b95b2fad5cc877d3c6b634320a2b.jpg

You will be pleasantly surprised how well that paint will clean up with a proper cut and buff. They will look almost new.

Take your time and be sure to show us the end results.

Tom, no I have no paint code for the old S-K green crackle (wrinkle) finish. Still kicking myself for having sold my 7 drawer S-K machinist's box 20 years ago. Kennedy did have a green wrinkle finish that was used in the 1950's on what they called their Bighorn line of boxes. The 520 was included in that, as well as a 3 drawer version, the 620, and a few others. I think it is a tad lighter than the S-K, but at least it keeps your box true to the maker's colors if authenticity is what you are trying to achieve.

Did some digging out in the garage after my post on the green Kennedy paint and found this. It is a Kennedy K-20 from the Bighorn line in the Kennedy green wrinkle color. A little dirty, but now out, so time to clean it up a bit and put it back into service

p.s. A few of us machinist types kind of like the brown wrinkle....it doesn't show dirt and oil as quick as some of the lighter colors :eyecrazy:

This is a S-K color match receipt that I was sent that was matched from a vintage S-K box. It is not wrinkle finish, however.

got this little PARKS box at Tradedays full of tools and good stuff for $10 !! My fav things in it were a Thorsen II !/4 ratchet set looks to have never been used, and a 1/4 inch Husky partial set. The box has a different shade of crinkle green paint. Neat little box.

Just picked up this Kr537/547/557 combo from 84' it's in pretty decent condition. This was the cheapest way to get the top box I've been looking for.
