Snagged another 7" wilton the other day. Fiancee could not understand why I needed a duplicate so I figured I'd post here and seek the comfort of other vise-aholics

Tell her they're not duplicates...the unmounted one has horizontal lines on the face. ;)

That A. S. Is great little vise, I use mine every day. A vise is not designed to be a bearing press and a lot of them get broken that way. If you occasionally want to press bearings get a cheap small press and save your vise.

^^^^^^^^^^
:+1: to that

Don't abuse it and it will last a lifetime and more.

My FIL had a big ol' American Scale that he bought right after WW2 at a War machinery surplus sale. Price: One dollar.
That was his only vise...standing proud and bolted to the corner of his bench for 60 years. After his death the vise moved to one of his other SIL's garage where it is still in service.

Ktmrider83[/B];6320822]What is this worth? I have been needing a vise for a while and don't want to get some harbor freight junk.. At my old shop we would use the vise sometimes for bearing into knuckle jobs..is the 3.5" jaw going to be a limiting factor? Thanks

American Red Seal vise

3.5" Jaw

Swivel Base vise

Ktmrider83, Red Seals aren't all that common and especially in that nice of condition.---JMO, but if the price wasn't to daunting I'd buy that vise just for the collector factor.---But if you're going to really put it through the ringer I'd pass on it.---Like the other gentlemen have said, it's not a press and won't stand up to that degree of treatment long.---To break that nice Red Seal would be the definition of a real shame.

I just picked up this vise at the local salvage shop (think "American Pickers"). It was marked $95 but I swapped him a mantlepiece and wood from a house we're remodeling and got $50 off. So, for $45 I'm pretty happy with it.

I already started disassembly and clean up, but I can't find a hint as to who made it. Any ideas? It has the remains of a very heavy black or gray crinkle finish on it.

The vast majority of vises that look like that are imported, inexpensive vises. The 6" jaw version of those tend to run about $60.

Well, hell. I figured this thing had WAY too much "patina" to be a Hazard Fraught product, but it does look very similar to some of their current listings. That's what I get for not researching it first.

It's not what I was hoping to get, but it does appear to be a workable vice.

WHO: i really doubt it was sold by HARBOR FREIGHT cause i think it was made before HF was in business, but i'm afraid PATINA doesn't always mean quality. feel free to post up questions on vises here or PM one of us if you find another one you'd like to buy for the other side of your bench. this is a good vise for those nasty jobs, but don't use it like a press and it should last you for a long time.

any chance you can tell us the price of those anvils sitting next to it?

again WELCOME (or WELCOME BACK) to GJ

you use the automotive paint as well or just the primer?

Any Name brand enamel should work, if you use harsh chemicals you may want to pay closer attention to its resistance to such. I used "Machinery Gray" on my vise 30 years or so ago, and harsh chemicals has been the hardest on it.

I just did a tin box, with pretty run of the mill Rustolium Painters touch, and I like how hard the finish is after baking it under a light bulb a day or so.

Thanks much for the offer. Lesson learned on that one.

I wire brushed it, cleaned it up with Simple Green, and lubed the screw. It'll be interesting to see if it works any better than my ~30 year old 3-1/2" Craftsman vice that I bought new.

Yea, the anvil is marked $225. He appears to get some decent stuff like this in occasionally. The place is Vintage South, LLC in Summerville, SC. He has a Facebook page if you're interested.

Help with Reed color, please?

I'd swear I've posted about this Reed 103S before, but can't find it. I'm starting the restoration and would like to repaint it the original color (or as close as a rattle-can can get). I'm sure it only has one coat of paint on it, and it looks to be original - but I'd feel better tapping into the collective guru-ness of GJ. It looks different in different light, so I've included pix in direct sunlight - the slightly bluish looking one, and by indoor incandescent lighting - the more yellowish one.

I'd appreciate if someone can point me at a brand & color of rattle can that will be close. It also looks almost like it's a wrinkle finish, but that might just be the roughness of the casting plus rust.

It came apart easily with just a spritz of WD40, and the dynamic jaw is in the e-tank right now.

All suggestions appreciated!

Thanks to this thread, I'm just more aware of vises I suppose. Saw what I think may be an FPU on the back of this work truck today. Thought I would share this terrible pic. :3gears: Looked like it had 5 or 6in jaws? Difficult to tell.

I have actually spent time at Vintage South talking to the owner and his wife. It is an above avg pick with some interesting car parts etc. We hit several places in Summerville on our last Charleston getaway. We found a great little hamburger joint about a block off the main drag. If anyone is headed to the Charleston area travel a few miles and experience a great southern small town.
As for a fundamental the guys here have enlightened me to the fact that if it doesn't say made in USA and you don't know the vise intimately move on. I have been fortunate that Drive's and the others are very willing to help.
Now if you will excuse me I am going to go sit and stare into the box with the pieces of the 3197 I can't lift out the box.

Either an FPU or an Indian (not American Indian) FPU clone.

Poland has been on the metric system since 1928 and even though they occasionally mark their vises with imperial measures, they are metric. It could be a 125mm or 150 mm. Possibly a 100mm, hard for me to judge.

Notice that it appears to be mounted via a vertical receiver, making it "portable". If the receiver hitch is 2 inch, maybe 125.

Back in the day, service trucks in Houston sported high end Wiltons. Now they have this cheap stuff. Too easy to steal a good one.

I'm going to guess that it's an FPU, based on comparing pictures to minds. No way to be sure unless I see the "FPU" letters in the casting, or other stamped letters.
Curious, why would a modern truck carry a vintage Polish vise on the bumper?

It came off the previous truck after it came off the truck before that? Maybe they picked it up at an equipment auction? I saw an FPU at a machine shop auction a while back (it was too far to drive for just the vise)...made sense to me.

I'm getting the Reed Magnet adjusted....

It found the little 404 for $20...but one of the feet is broken off the base. I have another 4" Reed with a good base that has a stuck slide, so I may combine the two. The pin is free and the jaw swivels, but is snug and it has quite a bit of serrations left on the jaws.

Funny thing was it was a couple of young guys cleaning out a garage and selling stuff for their dad who was getting rid of some of his father's old tools. They had three or four brand new Starrett carpenter's rafter squares that still had the wrapper on them so they said "here, have a square with that vise" and that is worth about $20 alone! They also had several brand new 50ft extension cords with a three outlet end that were made in the U.S. (15A, listed as having 12-3 wire) so I grabbed one of those for $10.

They said they haven't even started on the basement and it's full of tools!

Angry: we don't usually see hammer marks on the slides of Wilton bullets. it also looks like maybe your dynamic was welded or is that just a rough casting? looks like a good 5 inch vise without a swivel on a nice stand.

NC: are you upset that the 5197 won't come out of the box? if you would rather just leave it in the box and ship it to me i'll fix that problem and maybe get it back to you.

GMan: so you got the REAL REED MAGNET for the deals and i only found it's cousin that can flush a few out. hopefully the boys were actually the owners and not theives just trying to get the stuff sold without having to touch it.

User: i'd say that is a FPU too and maybe a 4.5 incher. i bet putting those vises that work great on utility trucks helps with thefts cause they are not as common as the Wiltons we usually see.

ALL: hope you are all having a great weekend

Gman:
Don't lose track of those guys. You might want to volunteer to "help" them with their clean out project.

Yep, already on that. They're pulling the stuff out, and dad is pricing it. They said the basement will be next and it's full of tools, so I told them to send me some pictures and I would come back.

What was funny was that everything was just old enough that even the inexpensive stuff was still made in the U.S. like the extension cord I bought. I hope the basement is as good as the garage was :D

Video of the Prentiss 98 swivel action. Incredibly smooth for a huge vise ... or maybe it's so smooth because of how huge it is. Certainly the stoutest swivel design I have seen in person. Btw, it's not even bolted down or affixed with clamps or the like at the moment, makes that movement all the more impressive.

I have a little bit of experience dealing with criminals so I'm pretty sure they didn't pull one over on me

I was talking to the dad for a couple of days, and the kids were in charge of the cleanup, but dad set the prices. They were hard at work cleaning, sorting and organizing when I got there, and had been at it for some time....neighbors everywhere, nice development. I'm pretty sure it was legit.

I managed to buy one vise this week, it just happened to have a power hacksaw attached to it. The three Wiltons came from the closed down GM plant in Atlanta. The 5" Reed was real nice but I already have the older version. It's hard to walk away without buying a vise at a yard sale. :(

Three Wiltons's and a 5" Reed, they just don't have yard sales like that in my area
