Can someone test this link and see if it works?
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sHFRfY_DFXMz6bFeeYI7UKRpUd3aheAE86KBQRBGb9s/edit?usp=sharing

Should come up as an Excel Spreadsheet on Google docs with collected vise info. There are about 2200 entries and there should be filters at the top to select specifics....e.g....Prentiss, Stationary base, 6" jaw...etc.

It is a work in progress so there could be some errors, or many errors.

For now I just want to know if people have access and if it is functional.

Just looked at it and its awesome.

Re: RGRUDE's vise info spreadsheet:

Yes it worked for me.
Wonderful info - and raised a question. My newly acquired Reed 32 matches the description except for the jaw size. The list claims 4 1/2", but mine measures 4 1/4. Were tolerances that loose, or has mine been "trued up" a time or two too many?

At the risk of asking too much, I always like to see dates of manufacture. The closest I can guess for my Reed is 1920 or earlier because of its stud mount.

But, great work - and a huge amount of it!!

My favorite red for vises is Rustoleum Enamel Gloss Sunrise Red Spray Paint. If you find another vise that you want to paint red try it out.
That is a very nice red.

I enjoy seeing how many of us put our "projects" in our family oven, nothing like cooking food with all those wonderful smells of our shop :rocker:
I'm guilty of doing this for years to cure various "small" projects.

I'm guessing that helps cure the paint faster? What temp and how long?
170* is the lowest my oven will go, and that's what I use. I leave it in for 1-2 hours.

I couldn't stand it and stripped it back down this morning. I decided to go with a light grey, similar to the original color. It's in the oven curing, and will get the letters re-painted this afternoon.

Are new press in pins available for Wilton bullets? The one I measured is .185"-.190" and 1" long.

I read here where someone tapped the barrel and used a partially threaded rod instead of a pressed in dowel. Does anyone know where the details of that mod are?

Glad it is working, and that you like it

As mentioned, there can be errors. I went and checked the brochure, and sure enough, like you said it is 4 1/4". I made the correction on my working spreadsheet and also on the Google doc. If I did it right, it should now show 4 1/4"(new to Google docs, not sure I am doing it right)

For now I still have other specs and photo links to work on, this will take weeks (or months). Dates would be great but they are very ambiguous. Wilton has dates on the slide, but those are for each individual vise. For model runs, it is hard to be exact.

As an example, I know Reed was founded in 1896, but what was their first vise; a 100/200 series, a 30 series combo like you have, maybe neither and it was one of the pipe vises they are still famous for. The 100/ 200 series went till mid to late 1930's then they came out with the "R", then late 50's early 60's came out with the 100 N & S which have the oval Reed logo. These are all aproximations hard to get exact dates. The original 100's although remained the same model in the early 1900's before coming out with the "R", did change the base to a flat 4 bolt at some point. Then the "R" was introduced with the "meatball" handle, but later scrunched to a flat mushroom head. These changes were made at some point without changing actual models.

This is for Reed, for some others even less is known and most dates are really a crapshoot at best for some. It would not be easy to collect and tabulate this info.

FMC1959, that spreadsheet is IMPRESSIVE. I probably have 100 plus hours in the Wilton date sheet.

People always ask about the date sheet but it's in the signature line of every post I make!

When I get a chance I will study yours a bit and PM you any suggestions. If I did mine over I would do a few things different but to much work to go back now!

Blsnelling love the colored USA on the Wilton, your vise came out really good.

I finished up this Craftsman/Reed going to redo the letters that white was just to thick should of thinned it out a tad. Always learning

FMC, great work.---It's facts and figures like that and Blue's and Dayid's, that Google refer people to when they are seeking info on vises.---Thank you fellows for the time and trouble to make an invaluable reference available at the touch of a button.

You can make your own pins from 3/16 stock you can buy at Home Depot or hundreds of other sources; cut to size, chamfer and knurl; if you can't knurl, lightly hammer them all around to make them fit snugly.
Or, you can drill and tap, and grind a set screw as per the instructions you have found.

FYI, not sure if you are aware, but that is KMScott's site. He is our resident expert machinist and restorer of vises and their parts...especially making vise jaws that are probably better than the originals that came on the vise.

The jaws Kevin puts out are far superior to the originals! The man is genius!

Last week I picked up a clean 600 locally and before the day was out, I got an e-mail from someone looking for some "big American iron" in the form of a Wilton. He wanted it done in copper....so that's what he's getting!

It's going to be a user so I didn't try for a mirror finish on the jaw supports, etc...just nicely cleaned up. Some of the smearing you see on them is actually Fluid Film.

Very Nice Bub!!

Picked up this Reed 103 1/2 R last week on top of a heavy duty workbench. The Reed is in good physical shape and should clean up nicely.

OK boys and girls, here's a head scratcher, Athol model 514 1/2 quick release fixed base vise. Came out of RI this weekend. I spent 10 minutes poking at it yesterday and still can't figure it out.:headscrat:headscrat

I can't find anything on the interweb either. Hell I cant even tell you what that thingamabob does. I just assume that perhaps it lowers the threaded section into the jaw support so the dynamic jaw can slide out.

Take it apart, I want to see whats inside. I bet it is a cam that rotates up to to put pressure on the half nut. Maybe the spring is out of place or the lever is not pushing it far enough to engage or release ?

I think u are,100% correct. I should have taken a pic from the bottom, there's a slot for the spindle nut to drop into. Yes I believe it is gummed up and probably a cam operation to drive it up. I also believe there was a handle to operate the shaft. It kills me that I just landed in Dallas and wont be back til Saturday. Wanna guess what I'm doing Saturday.

I want to be very careful though, not like parts are available for this one. Maybe vises has one?!?!!

This is what vice searching is all about. Only paid $40 for it.

So I am new here and have been slowly working on my garage since I moved in last November. It has been slow but this year I am getting after it. Picked this up locally for $40 and it looks to be in good shape. Would love to refinish it like some of the ones here.

Chas Parker No. 973. Not sure what year it is but will try to look it up.

Welcome to the board. That's a nice vise. Great all around user. You paid a phenomenal price considering it's condition . Way to start with a bang!

This is an excellent resource. Especially now that Dayid's is down.

A couple observations,
1 - viewing the document is difficult on my tablet. Scrolling takes an excruciating amount of time. This is probably more an issue with my iPad than the document though.
2 - I downloaded a copy on my desktop and saved it to my icloud account. This let me read the document on my tablet, but I couldn't access the links. Once again, probably an issue with my iPad.

3 - finding the link when you need to look something up will be increasingly difficult as the posts on the thread add up. A solution might be to create a separate thread with the link in the first post. With an easily searched title, the membership will be able to find the document and read the latest updated version (assuming they forget to subscribe). A separate thread will also allow us to contribute info as posts that will allow you to update the spreadsheet with our help.

Thank you for all the hard work you've done to compile all this information and make it available. It should quickly became an invaluable resource.

I wonder if the folks that run GJ would tag (or whatever its called) this and put it at the top as a permanent thread for vintage tools?

Your spreadsheet seems to work for me.
In fact, I noticed that my Parker 205 was listed. Thank you, I'm honored.
I have a lot of vise pictures and information. Please let me know if you would like me to send them to you.

GREAT work on the spreadsheet! Let me know if you want specs for 8 inch Athols. I have both the stationary and swivel versions. Actually I have quite a few monsters that I didn't see specs for.

What color was Wilton using in 1967?

A blue/green/gray combination that is very hard to duplicate. I haven't seen anybody get even close. I have had vises from 1966 to 1973 with that color original paint and it's going to be very hard to match. It also looks very different in different lighting conditions, making it even harder to match.

I took one of the vises to a paint shop and four of us spent 45min trying to find something close. They scanned it without much luck and then tried a color wheel without much luck. In the end one guy just started trying combinations and got pretty close, but there's no formula for it to duplicate or share.
