Went and picked up the flat cabinet today. Really good shape and the drawers roll really nicely. Got it for a 100 bucks.

Somehow, I've missed this thread. Some cool stuff in here, that's for sure.

I've got a unique drawer/cabinet that I'll have to post a picture of. It's an old set of VHS rental tape trays, from back when 7-11 rented VHS tapes, and they kept them under the register counter. I took two of them, and stacked them, bloted them together and use them to keep consumables in (nails, screws, electrical parts, etc).

00FXD: great tip and even a rag with WD 40 on it will take off a lot of the surface rust. how's the weather up in my old vacation spot these days? haven't been to Penticton since 1972 even when i was helping develop some in Omak just south of you in 2006 & 2007 i should have ventured up. great place to visit and probably to live too.

Fowl: as i recall your OREGON COAST craigslist doesn't have a lot of anything at times so check out the thrift shops, garage sales, estate sales. also when you see some people moving or a big company out of an old building it sometimes doesn't hurt to ask if they might want to give or sell you something instead of having to pay to dump it. you can't believe what some people will let go or throw away when remodeling or moving.

SB: well you certainly didn't over pay for those. happy to see you were able to buy them. did your bride help you unload or load them? if i recall correctly you mentioned you needed to load them inside your rig with the drawers inside them or did you make two trips?

Thanks drives. I've had a good time exploring local thrift shops and pawn shops.

In fact I picked up a nice handful of wrenches from a pawn shop a couple of weeks back. Proto, Blackhawk, etc. $1 each. Right next to the basket of shiny chrome newer craftsman wrenches for $3. To each their own I guess.

They fit almost perfectly in two pieces in the back of my Tacoma and I put the base in the back seat. Wife helped me unload it at the house, took all the drawers out to make the weight manageable. Guy said he had been using it for about 20 years but everything is going digital, it is in really good shape.

FOWL: have fun searching, finding and buying (and maybe selling a few) old tools and stuff. just BEE CAREFUL cause this can become more than a hobby and might be adicting.

SB: your Hamilton cabinets look a bit narrower than most of my Hamilton flat files. i'm sure they made more than one size cause i think I own 10 or 12 of the Hamiltons and have maybe 3 or 4 different width's from 45.5 to 53.5 inches.

what are the dimensions of yours and if you want to share how you fill them I (we) would appreciate seeing the drawers open. also do your drawers have wheels on them which i'm guessing they do cause all of mine do.

Mine is only 28.25x40.75x36 tall. I plan to fill them once I get the Schaller bins this Thursday, I will take some pictures then. The drawers do have rollers on them will get some pictures of that this weekend also.

SD: so are you done buying up all the Vidmars available yet? how many does that make for you? just curious are you putting casters under these in your shop or just setting them on the floor or a pallet? did the bar or whatever was added for security come with your cabinet or was it MIA? thanks for posting

I have four counter height cabinets. Bought one somewhat locally fall of last year. The other three came from a electrical surplus company via eBay. No casters. Sitting on the floor. I don't want them mobile. I'm going to remove the external lock stuff. No plan to get the lock going on it.

I pulled the drawers and slides last night. Wiped everything down. This one will get a touch of paint on the front on the way back together.

Picked up the fourth Vidmar from the freight terminal yesterday. It is rougher than the other two I bought from this surplus seller.



I wiped down all of the drawers with Sprayaway glass cleaner and removed the slides last night. Tonight I cleaned the slide bearings with brake clean and lubed with Permatex assembly lube before putting it all back together. A couple drawers needed small tweaks to correct some bends from neglect or abuse. It all went together pretty well. One slide is missing a bearing and one drawer needs a spot weld on each side at the front. This is the drawer that's out of whack in the photo above. Should be an easy fix tomorrow.


I scrubbed the drawer handles with oven cleaner and reinstalled. I'm going to hold off on the cosmetic facelift for now. I'll need to sort out the slide with the missing bearing. Other than that I have a nice, functional, ugly but clean cabinet!

For anybody in the vicinity, there are some metal cabinets (8 for $200) in the tillamook area, posted on the Oregon coast Craigslist. Also a large parts washer. Same seller. I can't make it up there this weekend, and don't have the space right now. So, throwing it out to you.

So I got the bins this weekend and started setting them up. I cleared up a ton of space on top of my box of random nut, bolts screws, fittings....etc. I can now get rid of my small portable tool box.

Top three drawers are bins, then random tools I don't use much.

How are you guys keeping bins or other stuff from moving around? Just put mats in them? Or cutting some foam on the sides?

Scored a nice one today for 30 bucks! 27 drawers, manufacturer decal is mostly gone, can anyone figure it out?

Cleaning up the cabinet for resale (I literally have no room for it LOL). Figured out the maker, it's Hobart from Troy Ohio.

BB one of my 18 drawer setups has 9 of the bins with those Hobart style integrated pulls and frames... So now I know!

I cleaned this for the neighbor lady I am helping so we can sell it. This aluminum bolt bin had military part number stickers (National Stock Numbers) on it before I cleaned it. It was probably made in the Barksdale AFB Acft Sheetmetal Shop in years past and was probably used in a flightline stepvan for "bench stock" hardware.

Ebay purchase: Yawman and Erbe multidrawer cabinet. I'm upgrading a standard 4 drawer Office file cabinet. It was a local pickup sale, but the ad didn't mention in was in a construction yard, and the guy that was selling had it sitting outside. Luckily, it wasn't out there too long, as it only had some minor oxidation in some spots. A little WD40 and some steel wool took care of it. I like this one because the internal dividers are easily removed, they are not tack welded on or anything. It's 20 inches wide.

Be happy they didn't think it valuable enough to keep it inside - your price would have gone up dramatically. Anything "vintage" is running a premium around here - one of the downsides of being so close to NYC.

Man that is a really good score. It's a perfect size for small parts or tool storage. Loving all those drawers and that it's only 20" wide to fit just about anywhere.

Thanks, I had to get rid of the old standard file cabinet. I had a bout a dozen boxes of various size nails in a drawer, and it would constantly fall off one of the tracks. This one can handle much more weight. True what they say, they were built to last.

Ok so figure I will finally share my metal cabinets w ya folks. I have three cabinets in my garage, a Blue Streak Ignition cabinet, a snap on wall cabinet and a large explosion proof chemical cabinet that came out of a automotive body shop. Have had them all for over 20 years and the dirt and stickers were all added by me. Haha. Here ya go:

Recent purchase are these two matching Yawman and Erbe small parts cabinets. Each measuring 13" wide by 14.5" tall by 3.5" deep. Drawers pivot outward.

That is pretty awesome.

Here is one I bought through an estate auction last fall. It's not very heavy gauge metal but I loved the art deco design with the rounded corners. It's an old Westinghouse base cabinet for something. Not sure what it was originally used for but its just cool in my opinion.

And here is a file cabinet I just picked up yesterday. It was from a CL ad and while I'm not a big fan of plain file cabinets I loved the fact that this one has five drawers that are shallow enough to store tools, small parts or boxes of fasteners.
Ball bearing slides so it should hold some weight. All drawers slide easily. It needs a good washing and could stand to be re-painted better colors and have casters added.
