Here are pics from the innards of my Athol 514 1/2 quick release vise. Really amazing design. I got it to operate perfectly. As I turn the rod in front, a cam operates on the spindle nut and it drops into the jaw support. Really sophisticated design. Still cannot find anything about this vise anywhere

Picked up a craftsman 3 1/2" vise 506.51800. Columbian manufactured these sometime during the 60-70's. Seems to be in great shape and cost me $25

First off, there's really no need for biting sarcasm like that. All that can lead to is people getting upset.

Second, you misquoted me and took my comment out of context. I didn't say it was completely useless.

Third, what I said is the truth. This thread is almost useless for anything other than "wow, that's nice" sort of viewing. It's simply too large to sort through or search effectively. So many posts are gone that even when you try a search you have to click many pages back and forth to find what you really wanted.

Lastly, since I have such a poor attitude I promise not to bother you with any more leads on big vises.

Play ground 3:30 big boy!

Picked these up yesterday from a Craigs listing. The Wilton is a little pitted but functions well.

Bart,

Thanks for the scoop. Although I have the curved script , I have replaceable jaws. I'll be ripping her apart soon to check a date, and I'll definitely study the R-I history link.

Gratzy Sir !

Tonellin: That's a nice vise. I have two sizes of Craftsman vises with chevrons. They spiff up nicely.

Tonellin - It must be Craftsman Vise Day in New England. I picked up the same model vise in Tewksbury for $10 this morning. (more when I post up in the garage sale thread later)

Nice snag. Mine was in east Boston near the airport got some snappy crowbars and blue point hand tools as well from a guy moving to CA

My 2¢ on the "raging controversy" about images.

First off, I have to agree with FMC:
It is a shame about the images being gone, gone, gone. The images are an integral part of this thread and when an image goes, the thread is diminished by that loss.

In my experience it is best when there are two or more locations for data(image) storage. And in the spirit of Some is GOOD, More is Better and Too Much is JUST ENOUGH, the more sites with the image, the better. We all have personal storage, so that is Site #1. GJ could be site #2, the image hosting site of your choice could be site #3.

It is just as easy to upload an image as it is to specify a URL to that image. So why not post it to Photobucket, SmugMug, where ever and also put the image here?

I also agree with Bart:
1. There is entirely too much "Atta Boy" here - granted it is richly deserved, but scrolling through screen, after screen, after screen, after screen, after screen of over sized and/or included images is beyond tedious and just about crosses the border to mind numbing. Perhaps we need an "ATTA BOY!!" button that would allow us to add kudos to the original post?

2. The thread has gotten too large and is becoming impossible to use it for research or just plain finding something you need to reference. With the recent absence of Dayid's site, this thread is now probably-to-certainly the best source of vise information on the internet. We need to maintain this distinction.

VA, BL, CRS, GET all have tremendous amounts of information to share. It is a shame that it sometimes gets lost in the clutter. (I can just image the responses I am going to get on THAT ONE!).

We need some method of being able to cross reference the posts and pertinent info they contain.

We need to contribute more to Drives vise makers thread, but in a structured manner. If we could somehow imbed a spreadsheet to track the data.....

Lastly, VISEs, can you postpone the call out until Monday evening, I want to set up a ticket concession and maybe get video rights? :) :shocking: :)

I was thinking about something like that earlier today. I wonder if it would be possible to have some kind of a running index of topics e.g. Reed 406 - Posts Numbers: 506, 507, 579, 621 etc. I realize that post numbers are always changing so it probably couldn't be exactly like that but I think the general idea has merit. I don't have the technical know-how, or even the know-what, to do anything about it but, if someone else does I'd be glad to help.

I actually missed the fact that 577 had replaceable jaws...d'oh. The earliest versions with the curved logo had fixed jaws, and then changed to replaceable jaws, but I'm not sure anybody has those dates narrowed down.

A parallel history would likely be the early Craftsman line made by RI, so that might be worth looking at as well. An early Craftsman/RI with the curved logo is one I'm very keen on finding :)

Here's that Craftsman vise I picked up today for $10.
model # 506.51800
3-1/2" jaw

I have the same one in the Japanese flavor, and the 5" USA version.

This one has about 1/3 turn of slop in the handle and some ugly paint splotches on it, but is otherwise in great condition.

I wonder if I can work the swoosh into a Patriots logo when I finally get around to painting it ?

JKB

Good points on both sides by JKB, it is unfortunate, I was not looking to smack a hornets nest. This thread is many things to many people, a resource, a pat on the back for a good buy, or nice restoration. One thing is for sure, with the amount of pages, sure is popular.

Let's leave at that, people can post as they please, for anyone that it makes no difference, consider uploading to preserve for the future. No fuss, no arguments necessary.

Is there a step by step process whereby I can transfer my pics from Photobucket to my computer?---Since we are on the subject.---Anyone.

i'd like to copy my stuff and exit pbucket too. pm me the easiest way please. can i post vise photos now? thank u.

I am not sure anyone responded to you guys on thIs. I can't speak from experience, I have not used a photo hosting site. But you should be able to create a pictures folder on your PC, with sub folders for any categories you want.

Then all you would have to do is copy from the photo site and paste into the appropriate folders you created on you PC. You can use the control key to highlight multiple photos to copy at once, or use the shift key to grab inclusive amounts in one shot.

Or you could try grabbing all of them at once, copy them to one folder on your PC, and once there, you can sort them into different folders as you please.

Again, I haven't used Photo bucket and similar sites, but these ways should work.

Having said all this, note I said to copy and not cut. You can put all of your pics on your PC, if you also remove them from PB, any that were posted to this or other site would be lost on those sites...unless the were uploaded and not linked. The choice is yours, if you want to close your PB account, then you have no choice.

There may have been a time when hard drives were small and photos and videos quickly filled hard drives. These days their main use is to share photos with others or for yourself to have access to them when you are not on your main PC, but there are many alternatives today that are bigger and more secure.

If someone has more expertise on how VA and Wrench can transfer their pics from PB to their PC's please chime in

I used Photobucket for a while because certain forums would not let you post directly from your computer. I think that those forums did not have the server capacity to host the photos, so they linked to the PB host.

Once I was able to post photos directly, I stopped adding any new photos to PB. I think many of the "dead" links are to accounts that have been abandoned/terminated by users who no longer use the account, and don't consider that they are deleting the photos from previous posts.

Thanks FMC.---I have a member here that's trying to nurse this feeble brain through the process.---I just don't know enough about computers to know where to go, what to do.---It's like cave spelunking, what you can learn, what all you can do, it never ends, just branches off in another direction and then another until I'm lost.---It makes me mad, what all these hackers know and how they abuse their talent.---What I could do with a fraction of their knowledge.

Enough of that.---Thanks again FMC.---If one way don't work, I'll try the other.---And I wasn't going to shut down my PB by account by no means because I know it deletes all those pics.---I don't think a lot of people realize that.---I just wanted all of mine on one site so I wouldn't have to pull up so many pages while making a post.

Like JKB stated, having pics in multiple places is good for redundancy. If something happens to one, you always have a second or third place. With today's technology, people have tons of pics and few of them are printed, if something bad happens, they would be lost forever without backups.

Anyway, simplest #1 place is your PC, and simplest #2 place is an external USB hard drive. Then if you post stuff online forums, Pinterset, or Photo bucket type accounts, that's up to you.

If you want to be extra cautious, a good #3 backup would be any of the major cloud accounts, like Microsoft, Dropbox and Amazon. This would cover you if #1 & #2 were lost together because of fire, theft, or other misfortune. Lots are free for the first X number of gigs.

VA, I also have to say that nobody comes close to your search capabilities. Someone mentions a vise and you always have one or more pages found quite quickly.

You need to share your expertise on how you do this at some point.

These are not mine, I am posting them for posterity and so I can link them to my spreadsheet. These are beautiful restoration of American Scale/Red Seal # 53 & #55, 4 and 5 inch jaws respectively. Beauties!

Since we're back to talking about vises, and not how bad I'd spank VISEs in a playground scuffle :lol_hitti who can tell me about this? It's gotta be a York, right?

I just haven't seen the side with the patent info before. I'm sure I've seen similar pictures, but can't recall the details. And in the interest of being nice, I uploaded it AND added it to PB. If I get it I'll also add pictures to my website, which is where I'm starting to build a decent gallery.

Yup, the shape of the jaws and slope behind the anvil, I am pretty sure you have a York there.

I made an update to the Vise Spreadsheet, a couple of notes...

First off I noticed that it really lags if you use Microsoft Edge, but runs quite smoothly with Chrome. (not sure about Internet Explorer, did not try it yet)

It also does not work great on tablets, at least mine it doesn't, an older Android based tablet. It works but you have no filters at the top, and the top green row does not freeze, so titles roll away. Again, this was my tablet, YMMV.

Anything that is in red font is info that I am not sure. If anyone knows for sure it is correct or what the right info would be if in error, please let me know.

I guess it goes without saying that ???? is missing info. I only put these for brand names, COO, or model...other specs I do not have are just left blank for now.

Picture links in green font are catalog pics or brochures, versus blue links are linked to Pics from this thread.

Still lots of info to add but for now up to 2205 entries, with 764 having a linked pic of sorts. There are still many I need to add info (Velox among others) and slowly will get to them.

Very nice, someday I hope to own a nice Parker Superior (800 series)

I'm going to keep the Parker a Garage Queen and actually use the Wilton. The Wilton is a little rough around the edges with some pitting but completely functional.

Allfast - don't be bummed. You dodged a $30 bullet. The vise looks like a poorly made import. Something better will come along. Heck, ANYTHING that comes along is likely to be better.
