How are they as far as taking a beating.. lasting..

It seems the newer hook is to large for getting in small areas, and not many good reviews ..

Anecdotal only, but my PP3's case started coming apart soon after I got it. I know the switches fail often too, enough that people go ahead and buy a spare.

I've had my PowerProbe 3 for what must be 3 years now, and it's held up great. No issues at all.

I looked at the ProwerProbe 4, but for that cost, I'll just stick with my PP3 and a separate DMM.

I have a power probe 4 and loved it the few times I used it. It is not a replacement for a DMM but it can do several more test that make things quicker.

If you don't care about the nicer screen on the 4, I'd say go with the 3.

My 3 has been good to me for 3 years however I saw using it yesterday trying to probe a connector. Must have shorted it out it made a pop and not doesn't work. So I do want to replace it and I'm not sure if I want to get another 3 or try the 4. I will say whatever you choose get the master kit with the wire piercing probes I use them the most easy to test things in a harness without ripping it a apart, you can also plug them in your regular dmm

I have the 4 and it's ok. I'm a bit old school when there's an electrical issue I grab my multimeter and test light 1st and usually find/fix the problem before breaking out the PP4.

I have an original Power Probe that must be going on 15+ years now that is still going strong. About two years ago I took it out of day to day use and keep it in my coach for when we travel.

I replaced it with a Power Probe 3 and really like it. It has held up well for 2+ years now of quite heavy use but no issues thus far. So far I have had no need to step up to the 4.

I had a pp3 for a few years and had no problems with it being damaged. I now have a PP IV and had an issue it was displaying approx 1v low when compared with my fluke so they warrantied it.

I have had a pp3 for a few years. It has held up well except, I did have a problem when it was dropped on the tip and damaged the circuit board. I called the company and they sent a sent a new board out free of charge. Great customer service.

If I was buying now, I would get a 4 over the 3. I was going to get a 4 when they came out but I noticed it uses a different cable so not all the 3 accessories I have will work. I am waiting for a killer deal on 4 with all accessories and the 3 will become a backup

I have the 4 and it is awesome. Its my go to for checking circuits quickly but having a good multimeter is still required for checking continuity on specific circuits (though in most cases its not as common for me nowadays).

I have no complaints with my IV, I purchased it through tool topia for a good price. It doesn't get used everyday though so I can't give an accurate review on how it would do everyday in a shop environment.

I have the PP3 master kit with the short finder. I love it. The extra features in the IV I have in separate tools anyways so I don't think I'll upgrade until the 3 dies. And at that point the 6 will be out lol

There is a little circuit breaker on it, have you tried resetting it?

The hook is the better of the power probes IMO and i say this only because of the hotshot feature that the hook has.. It will load test a circuit with a 5amp load at the press of a button..

This is a critical step when diagnosing circuit faults. Circuits that are hanging on by a single strand of wire will not show a fault when you ohm it out using a dvom.. Load testing all circuits that carry atleast half an amp continuously is a good way to not get burnt during diagnosis.. The hook does this easily, also the snap on eect900 does this..

You can literally put your dvom into storage with either of those power probe products (power probe makes the eect900 for snap on).. You don't have to struggle to find a good ground like you do with a dvom or test light. If the power probe is on then you have a good ground without question.

I have the pp3 and I have the eect900 on order with snap on.

Many techs are saying the hook is bulky so getting it into places seems to be an issue..
And it's failure rate.. seems it's failing more than the earlier models.. and why the price dropped like a rock..
discuss ?

Can't comment on its durability. But it has ideal features. I have had the pp3 for a few years with no issues. I don't own the hook, I have used it, it is big but you can still manage.

I'm getting the eect900 from snap on that's made by power probe but has the hooks features and a few more.

Maybe the price drop is because something new is on the way. They did just release a pp4s.. Not many new features though.
