Thanks Jake,
I don't feel so bad now. Should I simply post generic questions like this in the Vintage Tool Area?
BTW, don't go perusing the Los Angeles CL tools/Vise area. You may want to move there...it's old vise heaven this week !

VA: sorry I wanted to help you, but i tried to log on to my FB account and it was registered under an email account i had tied to a website i no longer pay to hold it's name since i retired.

my first question to you or anybody is how did you put the pictures on Photobucket in the first place? if you downloaded them from your laptop or computer like i did i still had a copy of the pictures on my laptop/computer. or did you delete the pictures off your computer or cell phone once you put the pictures on PB?

so all the pictures you posted of all your vises are not downloaded to GJ and are on Photobucket's website?

AllFast: you can post up questions about vises here if you have some, but just an FYI if you post a Craigslist or auction listing of a well priced rare vise that you don't own don't expect that one of the people looking at the thread might buy it first. not necessarily a member cause there are a lot of vise guys that just watch our thread and are not members.

ALL: for what it's worth this thread has some life and if we just posted pictures and didn't talk about the vises whether we've seen 100's of them or just one i doubt the thread would get as many members sticking with it so long. i can't say i remember every post for the last 4 years and the ones prior to that that i used to read all the time, but i bet trying to remember at least for me is maybe something that will keep me from having memory issues later in my life. if you don't use your memory you lose it and sadly way to many good people tend to go that route.

here's to 20 more years of talking about vises. whether we all agree about content or personalities one thing is for certain. WE ALL HAVE VICE FOR VISES and maybe all old tools.

Drive, getting pics onto Photobucket is a synch.---Getting them off is a cat of another color.:willy_nil---But I think I might be getting there.

To upload to PB you just stick in your sim card, and hit upload where it tells you to.---Presto.

Here is one out of my collection that I've never found any information on none. Anybody ever seen one?

How narsty are the teeth on the jaws? I'm leaning that its an engraver's vise with the ball mount, but not with aggressive teeth...

Looks sort of portable also, with the "clip" mount...

4" smooth jaws. Yes quite portable as it isn't all that big.

Could be a engravers vise. I'd love to find some literature on it.

I know this vise hasn't created much interest here but I post this for when another Athol 514 is found. I found the patent for my Athol 514 1/2 Quick release vise. Turns out this was Laroy Starret's last patent prior to his death. It is from 1922.

For some reason the patents pics dont load but they are in the link below.

I'm quite certain it does but now you have me questioning myself. I'll have to double check tomorrow.
Do yours all day "Bellows Dallas Texas"?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes it has a sticker saying Bellows Dallas Tx Patent Pending.

I founds some Bellows small drill press vises but they didn't say Dallas on them so far.

That's cool with the little lever below, so how does it work? You turn the lever and the screw disengages so you can pull/close it...OR...when you turn the lever, it allows you to lift the dynamic a bit so you can open/close it?

In its usually spot on my bench where it's used daily. My go to vise.
Don't have a picture of the stamp, but it's on the top of the slide, and just barely behind the static casting with the jaws all the way closed
Simply says "3 52"
The very top left corner of the picture is the back of the slide of my big vise in the shop

joe: I'm glad you're excited about your Athol QR vise. I'm also glad that you pointed out that it was his final patent. That adds some significance. Here are some larger views of the drawings . I added the patent drawing for Laroy's Combination Try Square. It wasn't his first patent but it was the one that made him wealthy and famous (and the owner of Athol).

Here is what is unique about this one. On the front of the vises jaw support is a spindle/cam with a small lever handle on it. This handle is spring loaded. You turn the spindle/cam and a ratchet, located on the rim of the cam, engages a lever and the spring exerts pressure allowing the lever to lock on the ratchet on the rim.

Now, as the spindle/cam is turned the spindle nut drops into the jaw support and locks in place in the down position. The dynamic jaw is now free to slide in and out.

You would now place your work in the vise, slam the jaw into contact and release the lever, re-engaging the spindle nut. You can now tun the spindle handle to tighten against the work

One thing you have to remember is that this Athol weighs about 60 lbs and has 4.5' jaws. The standard Athol design of lifting the dynamic jaw (like you would on that Athol 0 I picked up) is just impractical on a vise this size.

Oh, one other intetesting feature is that the main spindle handle is moveable but under severe tension, holding the vises handle in one pisition.

Everything is dismantled now and in a simple green bath to strip the finish. As soon as I restore it (I'm thinking BLO) and re-assemble it I will take a video of it in operation and post it up here.

Just to make it clear, VISEs and I are not upset with each other, we have PMed each other before about vises. So let's chill out a bit please.

I am still a bit miffed about him "stealing" my Reed 208 a while back though LOL!

Joe: for some reason your pictures don't enlarge when clicking on them. any reason you or somebody else might know why? glad you got your Athol sorted out, but since you live on Athol Drive i had no doubt you would.

VN: welcome back and glad to see you posting again. just curious did you make those Lead or aluminum jaws for your Rock Island Swivel jaw vise? also since you use that vise a lot how often do you pull the pin and use the swivel jaw option?

ALLFAST: the rounded or curved Rock Island vises are the older ones and sorry i don't have the dates memorized, but they are usually pre WWII and usually 1930's and maybe 1920's or a bit older if they don't have the Electric brass tag on them.

Drives, the soft jaws are 1/8" sheet lead I've got a partial roll of. Used a piece of cardboard to figure out the right shape, cut the lead out with tin snips, and bent it to shape. They work great for certain things. About the only thing they aren't great for is holding something smooth and round against turning. But you can clamp polished surfaces, and even blued guns in them without worrying about damage.

As for the swivel jaw, I probably use it at least once a week. I definitely couldn't live without a swivel jaw anymore.

The £20.50 eBay special unknown size Parkinson turned up, turns out to be a little No5, nothing wrong with it just very dirty, a bit of weld splatter to grind off and its got smooth jaw inserts so perfect for a set of soft jaws.

I just made up a set of copper soft jaws for my little rock island. Never actually used them before, and I had enough copper for one set, so I figured I'd do it for my favorite vise.
I'm posting a thread on my way of making jaws in the general tool section of anyone is interested

Picked up this Chas Parker No. 203 this week end. Nice swivel vise so I took a gamble.
Missing the collar and handle. Not finding these on the bay, any other sources for them ? Making them myself is not an option.
Stout little vise, research shows it weights 43 lbs. Jaws look good too.
I have run the dynamic jaw out completely by hand, very smooth operation.
I would like to get this guy up to speed and hang onto it.

Any parts leads are appreciated, Thanks.

Brian
